  • Diesels are good for caravaning and salesmen. Fo an average Joe looking to tootle around town (like me) and the occasional long distance trip then a petrol is just the ticket.

Same could be said about PPI, why did everyone that took out a loan or credit card not read all the small print or go over all paper work, difference here is I went in asking for a product and got advised the wrong product after explaining circumstance!!

You can't compare your situation with your car to the mis-selling of PPI, the two situations are totally different.

Rule 1 of buying a car is don't trust the salesman.

I have a new car on the way and am not going to make a claim, but I do think sales staff should advise better, especially when its the second biggest purchase most of us will make

if you have to rely on a salesman to advise you on what is the best car for your needs you have to wonder if you are competent enough to be let loose on the road.

How is trusting a car salesman fundamentally different to trusting a bank salesman?
  • In the same way that trusting a politician is fundamentally different from trusting a priest :)
  • It's not like you couldn't do a PHD with the information and opinion freely available on the internet.

I wanted something that would do 120 MPH, have brilliant mid-range acceleration, be good for 55 MPG, seat 5, be comfortable and reliable, cost no more than £5K and last me 5 years, and not be French or German or Swedish or American. Most of my journeys are 80 plus miles, so a Honda Accord Diesel looked good. Had I read the reports I would have found that early one's have a rubbish exhaust manifold and it would crack and it would cost me £800 to fix.

Should the salesman be found wanting, 2 years later ?

OP - take it for a good 20 minute thrash once a fortnight and you shouldn't have to worry about the DPF being blocked.

And as long as you don't pootle about at 30 in 6th, the DMF will be fine. When cruising keep revs over 1500rpm. Petrols don't really have this problem as not many models produce any decent torque below 2k.

    So yeah, stop worrying.

Not that simple with 6/5, thay have form for failed regens (even if the circs are right) and due to excess fuel being injected finding its way into the sump, filling the sump with fuel leading (unless you keep an eye on the oil level) to complete engine failure,
Maker also has form for not being in the least interested.

Pages of threads on Honestjohn and other forums about this..barge pole job.

Research before parting with the cash is rarely wasted time.

Ironic having to drive nowhere regularly to clean the system up in order to have a more economical car.
Best of it is no ordinary owner/driver would ave a clue the regen was happening then, you could drive 100 miles, nowhere :D, for the system to clean itself and it might only stat to regen @ 95 miles, and yet another failed regen and another top of the sump with fuel.

Unbelievably stupid bad joke system, you couldn't pay me to own one of these things.

I was advised to go with a Diesel as it was cheaper to run than the petrol equivalent, but as I have found out the petrol would of been the better option as I dont do the mileage and the driving requirements for a diesel.

I do now think is it a manufacturer problem rather than a mis-selling
problem, as pointed out other manufacturers have no problems with there diesels and DPF products.

Dont know what I am going do do with my old car as I wouldn't feel comfortable selling it to someone when the DPF light will go off for all sorts of reasons.

A diesel does more MPG in general than a petrol. But a diesel costs a lot more to buy initially from new.

Did you do any calculations as to when your breakeven point would be? Did you ask why the diesel was £2k more expensive than the petrol?

The dealer was correct that the diesel would be cheaper to run based on the MPG but it's down to you to look at the buying costs.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

I suspect you have a rather higher opinion of the trustworthyness of priests than I do ;)

Seriously though I genuinely don't see a distinction between motor trade and banking sales staff. And I say that having spent a few summers working for Lloyds Bank in my student days.

So, buy second hand! Personally I would never buy brand new unless I was very wealthy, but I might make an exception when I retire and get my lump sum.

I would suggest break-even point is around 25k but that's open for debate.
