  • Hi ladies, been AWOL for a few weeks but having been trying to keep up! Hope everyone is doing ok? Hugs to any ladies that need them. A big hello to all the new faces!!

I've been seeing lots of malk re maternity leave and returnig to work so thought i'd add my 2 pennies from when i had ds....my work were very accomodating with my request for flexible working and i do 22 hours over 3 days a week. I had 12 mths off with ds but found i needed to get back to work for my sanity. I think the pressures of being a new mum, trying to get everything right and feeling like a failure as a mum overwhelmed me and i craved non-baby related activities. I'm so hoping things are different this time round and that i'll be more relaxed with ds2 and not pile the pressure on myself. Thats said, ds loves going to nursery and has come on in leaps and bounds, similarly, i enjoy being me and not just 'ds mum' even though i could take or leave the actual job itself!

I think what i'm trying to say is take you time and see how you feel; motherhood was a completely different experience to how i thought it would be. I was expecting to turn into s stepford wife and earth mother and neither happened!

As for me, 24 weeks today!! EEEEEEEK!! Very wriggly baby and i'll be moving to the big girls thread nxt week......scary times!!
  • Good to see you Always - good luck in the next thread once you move up! Think there will be a few of us joining in the next couple of weeks.

ashtray - I felt movements at around 17 weeks when I was on holiday. Some have referred to it as bubbles or fluttering, but even my early movements felt like what can only be described as a kick! It's much stronger now at 22 weeks, it's a strange feeling as sometimes it can feel a bit uncomfortable and weird, but only for a split second. Even though its strange I absolutely love it :)

Talking about the baby moving, I've started counting the kicks on an app on my phone. I've noticed a few general patterns: It doesn't normally 'wake up' until I'm in the car on the way to work :p, I get little reassurance kicks intermittently throughout the day but no real set times, it has a kicking session after dinner around 6-7pm and then again when I lay down to go to bed at night around 10.30pm. The app monitors how long it takes for 10 kicks and it normally ranges between 20-30 minutes at night time (that's the only one I'm monitoring at the moment because I'm quiet and calm!) However last night, I have no idea what was happening but it took 2 minutes for 10 kicks and they were hard !! Baby was having a party in there that went on for over an hour until I fell asleep, and then when I woke in the night I could still feel little movements. It was then active again first thing when I woke up, but then it seemed to get back to normal throughout the day.

I was tempted to call the midwife as the movements are not following it's usual pattern, but then it did ease off so I've left it. I've been trying to think of what could cause it and the only two things I can think that I don't normally do are 1. I had my hair cut and coloured and 2. I had reheated Chinese takeaway :o Really bizarre, so I guess I'll have to keep monitoring and see what happens in the next few days! I'm not overly worried as I've still felt baby move throughout the day, but I was a bit worried at first that it may have been distressed and thrashing about.

Have any of you noticed patterns in your movements?
  • Hi always !! Good to see you, glad you're ok.

Re: movements, I have a leaflet from "count the kicks" (.org.uk) and it says that a pattern usually emerges around 26-28 weeks. I can't wait until OH can feel them - although I think that will be a while yet!

  • Ikea trip tomorrow very excited, need to get lots of storage solutions as we have a small 3 bedroom house with second child on the way and the smallest room is an office, which has to stay that way until we get the garage converted which might not be for a few years yet.

We will go to the Milton keynes ikea it's about an hour drive away but we only tend to go once every few years.

Looks like a cold weekend for most of us.

  • oooh jedi - are you getting a Christmas tree from Ikea? They do the "buy a tree for £25 and get a £20 voucher" (stock dependant)
I'm hoping we get one as there are several bits and pieces I could happily buy for the baby from there!

I'm 28 weeks and 3 days today, and mine still hasn't settled into a pattern. The kicks are really really hard at times though, and they make my belly wiggle! DH has been able to feel some movements since about 25 weeks, but my placenta is at the very top of my uterus, so I can feel loads down low and out front.

  • Hi everyone! Yay it's the weekend and I'm 24 weeks today! Time for me to move over to the 'big girls thread' too Always Alone - scary stuff!

Missy moo - My baby has a similar routine to yours at the morning - not much activity first thing in the morning (I often feel her first in the car on the way to work), random kicks through the day and an increase in the evening after dinner and usually laying on the sofa or in bed. The last few days she's been a little bit quieter and yesterday she really messed with my head - I didn't feel her for hours, not after having lunch, not after giving her a little poke and my tummy a wobble and still didn't feel her after laying on my left side. I started to panic and sat up to start writing a text to my midwife and suddenly she went crazy, I think I felt more kicks in one hour than I had in the previous 48 hours put together! It reminded me of when parents have to count to three to get their child to do what they're told, what a little madam!

It's hard to know what to do though isn't it cos I know they say dramatically increased movements can be a warning sign too :-/ I have a count the kicks wrist band I'm using to keep track and a little note book where I keep notes about when I've felt movement. What app are you using? I have another scan with my consultant on Monday so I'll hopefully get some reassurance then that everything is as it should me. I know she said last time I can't expect a routine until around 28 weeks so I try not to panic if baby doesn't follow the little routine she seems to have. I think it does depend what I'm doing too, for example I do feel her when I'm sat at my desk at work but if I'm out shopping or cleaning at home I don't feel anything. I guess it's just another stage in spending the rest of our lives worrying about children!

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend :) x

  • Aunty pickle didn't get a tree, vaguely saw the offer but didn't take much notice as had lots of other things on the list. Spent 3 hours there. We left our 2 year old with my parents so they had him most the day bless them.

Re movements with my first baby I first felt them at 18+4 ( I can be exact as I kept a preg diary) this time it was quite a bit earlier at 16 weeks, for me it feels like a popping (very light kick) and have felt what I can only think are rolls. Dh can't feel yet hopefully it will be soon.
