I keep going round in circles about when to start maternity leave, partly because being twins they will definitely be early but I don't know how early. Also a lot will depend on how mobile etc I am towards the end; I've heard lots of stories of twin pregnancies ending up being almost bed bound!

My current idea is to work until the end of Jan (14th Feb will be 37 weeks, considered full term for twins, and 38 weeks is the point they said they'd intervene if they'd not arrived yet).

My boss had twins 2 years ago and I've never seen her look so tired! She had a 70 mile round trip to work and she coped, but you could tell it was causing her problems. She had bad m/s though which didn't help. I'd go as early as you can

  • Aunty pickle I am also a medical secretary - although due to a reconstruction last year I am now called an administrator and have been downgraded to a grade 3 on nhs grading, although I have pay protection to oct 2016.

I worked till 38 weeks with my first pregnancy, I was full time and struggling so took a couple of days annual leave here and then. My boy was 12 days late so I had nearly a month mat leave before he came along. I will do similar this time around I only work 3 days a week but they are full days 8-4 then I have my boy on the other two days so may use a bit of annual leave to shorten the days.

I guess you can't predict how you will feel near the end and when your baby will come.

I said end of Feb/beginning of March, to which they looked annoyed and made a comment about women always getting pregnant to avoid large projects.

This is appalling! And quite possibly not even legal for them to say, given that preganncy/maternity fall under "protected characteristics" when it come to equality and discrimination. I would follow this up if I were you!

The icing on the cake was in a meeting yesterday I pointed out that there wasn't much time left to do things, my boss said 'we'll you've got 5 months, to which I replied, I only have 3 full months (Dec, Jan & Feb) and then another boss asked when I planned to go off, I said end of Feb/beginning of March, to which they looked annoyed and made a comment about women always getting pregnant to avoid large projects. .

this is NOT acceptable and I would raise it with HR. Im a project Manger and have tons of projects, large and small but no one would dream of complaining about me leaving half way through or not getting any new ones after Christmas.

Maternity leave wise, I was thinking of leaving at 36 weeks. My 9 months leave will then take me up to mid December and I will use up some of my holiday to take the end of December off and return in January. It and office based job mostly so could go longer but I thought 36 weeks was sort of a normal time to stop.

ooo danielley, that's horrible! At least you have your lovely scan to look forward to.

Jedi, yes technically I am a "Generic Support Administrator Band 3" but I just prefer my old job title! I went through two job "reviews" - it sucks doesn't it?!

Been looking for decent deals on them but can't find many locally xxx

  • Maternity leave wise, I was thinking of going off quite early, I work for the NHS & get a pretty good maternity leave package. I have a weeks leave to use which I'll take the end of February & then start mat eave from the beginning of march, not due till 8th April but I've seen too many woman dragging themselves around at the end of their pregnancy in work struggling & I don't want to be like that. I worked it out that as long I could be off for christmas, which I can by tagging some of my leave on to the end of maternity leave then I'd go as early as possible.

We have stocked up on a lot of nappies and wipes. Huggies pure wipes as everyone says they're the best & various nappies, Aldi, Sainsburys, Pampers. Had some vouchers which I used to buy some of them & the pampers newborn packs were £2.50 for 23 and there was a code online when you spend a certain amount so I got 230 nappies & 8 packs of wipes for £20. Not buying any more nappies now, not sure where to stash the load I've got.

Got my 20 weeks scan next tuesday & I think I'll feel more relaxed after knowing everything is ok after that to think properly about getting things sorted. I want the room organised before I finish work, otherwise I know I'll be dying to do it when I'm here on my own & that won't be good! We've picked the new carpet, paint & I think we're going for wall stickers, found the furniture we want and pram so it's just a matter of buying (and paying!) for it all now!
  • [Any news on your scan Danielley? Hope everything went well for you]

We've bought a Moses Basket with stand (99p!) and we also have a bouncy chair, MIL has a high-chair for us (but we don't know what it's like yet so may or may not want it lol!). We have quite a few toys and newborn clothes (unisex) from my SIL who had a baby in August.

We've just started looking at things like prams/buggies and car seats etc. I think we'll probably start buying after Christmas - although we're secretly hoping that relatives may offer to buy us things for Christmas!!!! ;)

We also need to decorate the nursery as it's very tatty and has "old damp" which needs sorting. So much to do!!!!

  • The scan was great! Everything was checked and measuring fine.

And we are having ....... A boy!!! I am super shocked, I was convinced 'he' was a 'she'. DH is ecstatic and I am really happy too.

Thanks for your support about work. I know they were out of order even if they were joking. I'm feeling much calmer now and i will have a return to work meeting with HR tomorrow so I will mention my concerns.
