    Hope everyone is doing OK.

In regards to the tidying up of the lady garden before labour, I have informed hubby that he will have to do it for me :rotfl: I'm not sure I am going to be able to paint my toes for much longer either so I will rope him into that too.

I'm not especially looking forward to soiling myself but like others have said I gather that midwives are very discreet. I did quite fancy a water birth but then I had visions of there being a floater and hubby/midwife having to fish it out :rotfl::rotfl:

Hubby finally got to feel the baby move last night which was awesome and he was pretty chuffed too. So exhausted today but I have until next Thursday off work so I am just going to chill and crack on with some knitting!

I thought we were not meant to have painted toenails for labour. But can't for the life of me think why!

When at the IVF clinic we weren't supposed to wear perfume as it contains alcohol and that's what they use to destroy the non-viable embryos. I don't recall why we could not wear nail varnish. Maybe for the same reason.

I'm sorry about your nan Disney.

I'm thinking we'll use real and disposable nappies. The latter when going out and at night. My sister said she went through 4 boxes a month of nappies and to get the same number of each size.

As I understand it, nail polish stops them seeing your natural nail bed - which is a quick easy way to assess your oxygen levels. You know the little thing they clip on your finger to check your pulse, that also 'looks' through your nail to assess your oxygen saturation levels.

So I guess it's just in case you end up with intervention or a c-section.

I guess you could get away with it on your toes, but its easier for them to give a blanket rule rather than saying it's ok on your feet, but not hands.

ETA: They also normally say no makeup, for a similar reason. Skin colour can help to identify some problems, especially in surgery. Plus if you end up in surgery the less contaminants the better to reduce risks of infection.

Oh i didn't mean during labour for having painted toes, I just meant in general although I'm not sure they will get much from the colour of my nails as I have Raynauds so have crazy coloured hands and feet at times including nails!
Interesting though as I didn't know you weren't supposed to have them painted during labour. I guess they give you a list of do's and don'ts nearer the time?

I'm sure some ladies on OBEM have painted nails. But I am equally sure I have read something about not bothering to have your nails done nicely as if you end up having to have an emergency c section they will take it off. Who knows!

I think when my mum had her hysterectomy she was told she had to have bare nails.

All my operations, of which there are a worrying large number, they insist on no nail polish, makeup, jewellery (other than wedding rings). For big operations they also say not to put on moisturizer in the morning, so that the various tapes they stick to you adhere better.

I tried to get away with leave in contact lenses once. I normally sleep in them, but that wasn't allowed either. So I make a small fuss each time to make sure my glasses come with me into recovery. I'm blind as a bat and I find it helps recovery if I can see what is going on.

I did see on one of those IVF shows some very made up ladies though heading for EC! And I agree the ladies on OBEM often have makeup and nails done. I guess they are always pretty low risk ladies, and maybe if you are willing to show your lady bits on TV, you get a bit more leeway on the face and nails!

Oh laila you did make me laugh re water birth!!!

My oh thinks I'm mental. I keep going on at him and he said he's not bothered how awful me think it is, he will be there for the birth no matter what!

I saw a spiral toy that matches the mamas and papas bedding I got at tesco, but it was £20 so I didn't buy it. My lovely oh went to a trade show today and instead of having a case of beer as his gift like he usually does he chose a £20 tesco gift card and gave it to me to get the toy :)
Little things like that make my heart melt!
  • I've had a couple of cardiac ops and they always made sure I had no nail polish on fingers or toes. All jewellery had to be removed but wedding band could be taped up. Tbh though if they were trying to remove my make-up/ nail polish etc if I needed emergency intervention I'd be more than a little pi ssed! I really can't see how they could justify wasting time like that. I think it's different if you're having a planned intervention but emergency stuff is just that- an emergency. They wouldn't bother with that faff in a&e if you needed emergency care so they couldn't do it in a gynae/ obs emergency either really... That's my opinion anyway! Btw- i go NOWHERE without mascara. Lol. :)

Bit fuming at oh at the mo. Just went to buy baby's playmat and bouncer (ebay deal) and was so excited. He got the hump at the place that we picked it up from and was pi ssy about it. I can't stress how excited I was at my bargain hunting. The items are in really good condition, i've already washed them and reassembled them and they are adorable. He's got a gob on because they're second hand and we can buy them at the end. The idiot seems to think that:
    1. I'll be remotely inclined to find, buy and clean used stuff at the end of pregnancy
    2. That somehow we have the cash to buy everything at the end (unless he knows something I don't but seeing as i'm bill payer I doubt it).
    Grrrr.
