Kenwood Chef - which to buy?

  • This is the one for the chef, I figure its less than a good quality ice cream maker, my OH and the boys love ice cream, and I would be happy to make them it on a regular basis, its just not the same done by hand. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kenwood-Cream-Maker-Attachment-AT956B/dp/B0002W5JGQ

As for the dough hook, I am not a bread machine user, but I use the kenwood for dough, and more so now I have the new one, so for me the dough hook is possibly the most used piece of kit, I have RA and am not up to making dough by hand, and the kenwood does the kneading for me.

    Thanks everyone for speedy replys!

The chef looks like a thumbs up! One thing that bugs me is that its white (I know it shouldnt!) the next model up is silver yet more expensive!

Jackie glasgow can i ask why you upgraded to a major?
I had a chef, but recently bought a major. Mine is mainly for baking, but I have the jug, and will be investing in the ice cream maker as a gift to myself from Santa :D I agree with PLP, future proof it, buy the chef and you can add on as and when you need it.

The one attachment I was interested in was the ice cream maker!

btw Penelope Penguin, where do you do your sausage recipies? And what about skins?lol
  • Mine is the Premier http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kenwood-Premier-KMC560-Kitchen-Machine/dp/B000PMLGQU which is silver.

Our John Lewis had the entry level model and the Premier on display and I felt that there was enough of a quality difference between the models to make the extra for the Premier worthwhile. I also think (from memory so check) that the Premier comes with a glass liquidiser and entry level on either has no liquidiser or just a plastic one. The Premier is also a higher wattage which I preferred.

Mine came from Costco, if you know someone with a card it's worth ringing Costco to find the current price as it was the best deal around when I bought mine.

I looked at the Major but felt that there was no way that I could manage the bowl, it was huge. I've made bread and cakes and all sorts and not had a problem with the size.

    Hi

I have a prospero and can honestly say it is pretty useless. It doesn't mix properly, the k beater, hook and whisk don't mix all the mixture - it's as if they are not close enough to the bottom of the bowl. I use it but really wish I had saved up a bit longer and bought a chef. I trusted the brand and it was a mistake.

The food processor attachment works ok but the liquidiser is still in it's wrapping as I've never used it.

Had the mixer about 2 years and keep praying it will blow up so I have an excuse to replace it. I wish I was one of those people who replace things on a whim:rotfl:

I almost bought the premier, but I make my bread in it, and felt the bigger bowl would give the dough more room to move (I also make biiiiiiiiiiiiiiig loaves, 1 and 1/2lbs of flour) - I am also planning on eventually getting back into making cakes and desserts for selling, and felt the bigger size was a better idea. As it turns out, its not that much bigger to use, and the things I have made sine I got it last week have been lighter than before - definitely down to the extra space, but also the fact that my Chef was over 30 years old. I bought it because it was £170 is Argos and the glass jug attachment was £15 bought at the same time, I posted it on the grabbit - the major was £10 dearer or cheaper at the time, too.

EDIT they've gone back up now, but are still a good price - worth comparing with amazon etc. http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500002451&langId=-1&searchTerms=KENWOOD+CHEF

I dopn't think I've ever come across anyone who has a Kenwood machine and not given it royalty status in their kitchen.
    It's a very special invention.

My 30+ year old chef is still going strong, it is the master at baking and I regularly use both the mincer, and liquidiser. I can honestly say that if it ever gave up the ghost then it is the only item of extra kitchen equipment that I would replace, even though there is only Grumpy grandad and me left at home now.

Sausages :D Recipe and skin-supplier in the post directly above the picture ;)

We've moved onto salami now, made in a similar way.
