For people going with Ovo, are you choosing

    A) 'Cheaper Energy Fixed' tariff which is managed COMPLETELY online (otherwise you lose the discount of £30 per fuel per year)

    or

    B) 'Better Energy Fixed' tariff which is managed over the phone

I'm wondering what happens if you go for the first one and need to ring them at all? Looking at the t&c's it states

"We realise that there may be times when you cannot meet the conditions of the discount as a result of circumstances beyond your control. In these cases, senior staff at our call centre may agree not to enforce the above conditions".

    Also found in the t&c's,

if you move house you will have to pay the cancellation fees as the tariff does not move with you.

With regard to the 3% interest reward scheme,
"If you make a significant overpayment into your customer account, then ask for that amount back within six months, we will reclaim any interest reward you have earned from that amount".
I still haven't started my switch to them yet as also have been a bit put off by some of the above.
  • New to this forum and am in the middle of changing energy supplier. With EDF until end of April and have tried the compare sites and ended up with Ovo as the best option or First Utility if I take the discount of £30 per fuel!! I have also gone on the MSE site for comparison but it keeps producing a completly inflated amount for my existing supplier based on the fuel figures that I have given which makes the projected saving of nearly £400.00. per year a bit of a joke. If I go with Ovo I will be paying approx £140.00. per year more than I am at present. Not sure where MSE get their figures from but it pays to look at other comparison sites. Has anyone had any success using a local council site that you can join and negotiate a price with suppliers. Do they work? Are they cheaper?

Which tariff did you switch to? The 12 month fix or until June 2016?
    macman wrote: »

The former. The 2 year fix comes at a considerable premium, and anyway I don't want a 2 year lock-in with the £50 ETC on this tariff.

When considering fixes currently available for between 12 months and 15 months, the decision is founded on two factors: one is mathematical and doesn’t alter, the other is political and personal philosophical.

The first factor is your own annual figure of consumption of energy. That's not going to change (unless your personal circumstances do).

The second factor is whether you wish to emerge from the fix just before the next General Election in Britain – scheduled for May 2015 – or just after it. Certainly, domestic energy prices are going to be a very live issue of debate and manoeuvring at that time.

For my own family, the difference in cost between Ovo Cheaper Energy, fixed for 12 months (£2,144) and Scottish Power’s (£2,148) fix to June 30th 2015 (effectively, 15 months) is just £4 a year.

On dual-fuel, ScoPo’s fee for early exit is £50; Ovo’s is (forgive me, macman) £60.

So, for some, like my family, ScoPo’s fix to June 30th 2015 is a more attractive and flexible option than Ovo’s 12 months. They wouldn't, like macman, get shifted on to Ovo’s standard tariff or forced to switch to whatever else is available on the market in April 2015, one month before the next General Election. Yet, with ScoPo, they would still have the option to switch then (or at any other time), if they did want to, for a mere £50.

What all that boils down to is that if you only want to fix for about a year, now, would you prefer your fix to end just before, or just after, the next General Election?

It’s your own choice – but I know which option I’d prefer.

I don't know if this should be in this thread but I am also with EDF until end of April. For the first time ever, somehow they have managed o get me into a debt situation and I owe £231.00. Every other year they have adjusted my payments to take care of any problems but this year it seems that they have gone out of their way to make sure that i will say..."Oh bother I will stay as i am because i don't want to have to pay out what I owe before I move to another company."
They even REDUCED my payments only about three months ago. And also "Accidently" missed a payment in October.Seems a bit suspicious to me. Anyway I am leaving and like First utility. Has anyone else had this problem. And Yes, I do send readings regularly!

I've just done another comparison and can save even more by not using the same company for gas and electric.

Hmmm. Wondering about 'Extra energy' instead?

They are only £8 more expensive than Ovo for me and are fixed until 30th Sept 2015, so an extra 5 months too. Their exit fees are £25 per fuel instead of Ovo's £30.

The tariff is also an online only one - but doesn't quote any discount for this, so therefore no risk of losing any discount if you contact them by phone at all?

Can't find out much about them though at the moment, or more details of the t&c's for the fixed tariff?

    Decisions, decisions ..................

That was another option for me. Looks like you can only switch by phoning them.

I have started switch to ExtraEnergy via Energyhelpline (£15 cash back on completion). Have received email confirmation of my application via Energyhelpline and waiting for ExtraEnergy info now. Understand from other threads that emails do arrive but they are a little slow - presumably because of competitiveness of deal and that they are relatively new.

my changeover seems to be turning into a right mess.
i went over with simply switch and it did not track, so i cancelled (tuesday 24th) the transfer and made the switch again via quidco and make it cheaper.
ive rang ovo today and the stop still hasnt been applied and the new has not started, im too ring them monday as the CS said he will find out why.
i realise part of the !!!! up is due to me but how long does it take to put a stop on.
i can sense that they will push through the original order and tell me its too late therefore i will lose the £35, i also may get punished for ringing them.
im beginning to regret this move and it hasnt happened yet.
