Thanks starnac, it does feel like things are starting to move!

Payday today :j :j and it seems I've been paid for the whole of January :j Not quite as much as I was expecting mind you... Only £100 more than old job, which considering I had a payrise AND I'm working an extra day a week doesn't seem quite enough of an increase! I know tax/pension/student loan will have gone up, but it's quite far off what salary calculator said.

Wonder if I'm on emergency tax code? I did fill everything in, they didn't ask for p45 but I checked online last week and they didn't have a tax code for me so I sent it to them anyway. Maybe they didn't get it in time. Or maybe my calculations were all wrong! Will check the system when I get to a computer.

Off to a meeting at old job today. Feels very odd, almost like I'm going back in time :rotfl: :rotfl: must remember to keep train ticket to claim back - although I'm not entirely sure which employer to claim it from just yet :rotfl:

Could be emergency tax code. Worth checking especially if you got a pay rise AND an extra day.

Good luck at your old job today x

Just managed to log in on the phone. Everything else is what salary calculator suggests but tax is £230 out  Looks to my untrained eye like they've taxed 20% of ALL of my gross income, when presumably they should be leaving me the tax free allowance bit. Pay slip has the right tax code though so who knows. Will give them a ring when I'm not on a train. Hopefully it can be easily sorted!

It could be that there's been a mix up and your p45 hasn;t gone in yet so they think you are working two jobs. That's the only reason I can think of for taxing your whole income

  • Cheery if it's something like 0T/1 it's emergency tax. Your new work should sort it out with your P45, but if they don't, just ring the tax office. Mine was sorted very quickly. Do it soon as if you do it before the end of March, they'll make it right in your payslip. Otherwise you might need to wait for a rebate through the post in about August/September :(

Re your polystyrene tiles, it might be easiest to get the ceiling boarded and skimmed. If you're getting other bits of the house done anyway, it shouldn't cost much.

And re your windows - any nice little local double glazing/window company should be happy to repair for a reasonable cost. Steer clear of Anglian or Everest or any of those as they are horrendous. I used to work in that industry and it's terrifying some of the stuff that goes on. It cost me £50 for the top panel of a window but that was about 15 years ago. Even so it shouldn't be much.

    Exciting times!

Those ceiling tiles never come down in one piece and the glue they used to use to stick them up is hideous and normally requires a heat gun to melt it before you can scrape it off. Ask me how I know!!!

Get someone in, they'll strip, reboard and skim in a day, worth every penny!

Excellent advice on the ceiling tiles. Just check first though - it may be illegal to fit them now, but if they are already fitted, and were clearly fitted prior to the law being changed, that won't make them illegal to actually have in your house I wouldn't have thought?

Hope you get the tax thing sorted - I fear I'm heading into the same territory myself at the end of the month!

That's what I've assumed EH - it's not illegal to actually HAVE them if they were installed years ago - same as our boiler :rotfl: they're a little bit unsightly though, and a couple are hanging off - so the debate is whether we just leave them and hope nobody looks up, or pay someone to redo the whole lot. Easily said, but there are so many other things that NEED doing (ie walls with no paper, ceilings with paper hanging off, holes in plasterboard, carpet that doesn't reach the edges...) - we're in danger of refitting the entire house if we just get someone in for every single thing... it's a delicate balance of 'as much as necessary' with 'let's get the house on the market before 2019'... Not sure that ceiling is a priority job but we'll see how bad it lokks once the room is properly clear!

    Thanks for suggestions though :)

Still not rung tax people, mustgo and do it now. Feel like I've got sox million things to do today (er, which is why I'm sat here talking to you lot... :o :rotfl: )

    Evening chums :hello:

Rang payroll, and yes, I was on an emergency tax code but they've got the right one now. Should get a nice refund in February's pay :j :j

LONG day today, and SO busy  Going to be like this at work for the next couple of months so best get used to it :D Really stimulating and interesting, and met LOADS of cheery people, but goodness me I'm tired :o :rotfl: Was planning to paint the stairs but I seem to already be on the sofa with a hot water bottle :o :rotfl:
