Luck is not a factor.0

Course it is. You may be unlucky and get one where a wire wasn't connected properly or it accidentally got damaged at some point or a part wasn't the quality it should be or whatever. If you happen to buy that console then even if you make sure not to play too long, you keep it cool, well ventilated, make sure it stays clean and dust free and so on the one factor that will be the difference in it continuing to work or not is luck.
You may be lucky and that wire may just be connected enough to keep it running, one unlucky accidental nudge of the console and the wire moves causing a problem. Or that wire may just mean it doesn't work from the start and you were unlucky in getting a decently built console.0 -
I preordered my PS3 for release, and it is still going strong. Its not just hidden in a cupboard and not used, it is used on a weekly basis, and has been since i bought it. Only issue i have ever had was the 60bg HD being too small, one new 320gb hd soon solved that problem (oh and had to replace 1 of the controllers as i wore it out!). Wonder how many of the launch XBOX 360's are still working??0

Some people have Xboxes that broke quickly. Some people had PS3s that broke quickly. And some have PS3s/Xboxes that are still going strong after 6/7 years.
ALL technology has a certain fail rate of units. It's just not as heavily broadcasted like it is with consoles, because there's such a side-taking mindset when it comes to Sony vs Microsoft.0 -
I bought my chunky 40gb ps3 second hand back in November 2011, and it has YLOd'd twice since, just over a year after purchase. I'm not surprised, because I don't put stock in anything made post-2000. You're lucky if anything lasts nowadays.0

Need help, Xbox One!! Does anyone know where I can get a discounted xbox one?
At least give people chance to answer. There's no need to post three times in a few minutes, especially when you're spamming another topic by asking an unrelated question.
Just look around. Ebay, Amazon, CEX, GAME etc. For game shops chances are some stores may have them and others won't. So go to your local and find out.0 -

There are a various factors that make consoles last as long as they do.
Xbox 360 owners reported over 50% failure rate, and over 40% had had two or more failures. PS3's had a 10% failure rate.
Microsoft acknowledged the problem by introducing a 3 year warranty, and introducing a no quibbles RROD replacement service to try and bolster confidence in their console.
Like it or not, Xbox 360's were HORRENDOUSLY unreliable for a piece of consumer electronics - and it took them three years (2012 - the end of the console life pretty much) and numerous revisions to bring the failure rate down to the level of the PS3's.0 -

i believe its mainly the launch 60gb consoles that had an issue. had my 80gb since early 2009 and it still works. with ps4 its too early to know what and if there are any faults.0

It always amuses me when people talk about machines from whoever are faulty, then point to surveys where people with faulty machines answer and give a false result. I have a 60G PS3 and a launch 360 Elite and never had a fault with either of them. I imagine there will be a lot of users out there with no problem either, yet we are constantly told that our machines should be failing.0
