A heads up to all PS3, maybe PS4 owners

I'm soon to be on my 4th PS3 tomorrow, with 2 succumbing to the YLOD and the first one suffering from a faulty Blu-ray drive within the first few days of ownership.
Let's first get something straight, a console should be for life, or however long you require it. Not a week, not 2 years (40gb), and not 4 years (250gb slim). If I hadn't have opened the 250gb already to clean it out I'd have complained to sony and asked for a replacement, as 4 years isn't a long time, especially when the PS3 has seen light usage due to my education.
PS3's die because the solder underneath the CPU and GPU heats up and cools, which over time leads the solder to crack. It's unfair really, as if you have no idea you'll either pay to let Sony fix it, pay a stupid amount to someone online, or fix it yourself and either break it or do it successfully, retrieve your data (which can ONLY be accessed from the PS3 it was created on, no swapping HDD's here!) and then you're left with a PS3 you can't sell, well, not honestly anyway, and having to buy a new one.
Just a heads up, because I never expected my slim to break like my original phat did.

I have had my first PS3 for 4 years and it still works fine, I have had my second one (slim) for 2 years and that also still works fine.
I have a PS4 and have found that it runs louder then the slim PS3..0 -
The PS3 has a very low failure rate but the YLOD is the most common issue with the original phat consoles.
I've had my slim PS3 around 3 years now with no problems. I always make sure nothing's close to the fan though so it doesn't overheat.
Sounds like you've just had bad luck.0 -

I don't know. I keep the PS3 in an open area, adequate airflow etc, I think the PS3's are inherently faulty personally0 -

The xbox 360 always had a far higher failure rate and the PS3 slims are far better than the original PS3s. How much time do you spend gaming though and do you turn the console fully off after gaming?
Obviously the more time it's left on and the more time you spend gaming the more chance it has of failing (or at least overheating even if it doesn't crash).0 -
Consumer electronics that cost £200 are highly unlikely to be expected to last "for life". I don't think 5-6 years is unreasonable. I had my first PS3 for 4 years before giving it away and it's going strong. My second I've had for little over 6 months - it's a refurb and doing fine.Thinking critically since 1996....0

My PS2 is still going fine...for that matter so is my PS1. So based on that it makes sense to assume the PS3 will have a long life too of a good ten years+ (although obviously with all electronics there's bound to be those that fail long before they should).
I'd say the PS3 is pretty good quality (more so with the slims) but the last gen consoles are more like computers than the previous gen of consoles. Most computers aren't used for more than 6 years - after a few years they are generally slower, out-dated and they get replaced. Based on that, you can't expect the PS3 to last as long as previous consoles.0 -
Older electonics were pretty bomb proof - they used over engineered solutions and much lower heat output components. Have a look at teardowns of old consoles on Youtube to see what I mean. Modern consoles use precision processors with very tight tolerances and much higher heat out put. Things like capacitors also swell and burst with age, killing old electronics. I went through 4 Xobox 360's, one RROD's stright out of the box, but my PS3 has stood strong. However it now gets occasional use, but in a 30-40Deg C Climate, so I wonde rho long it's got left sometimes!
I think 5 years+ is acceptable, but they simply aren't as bomb proof as previous generations. Things like SNES's and PS1's are so massively overbuilt I can see them lasting 30 or 40 years. SNES's in particular because of the solid state cartridges.0 -
I must be pretty lucky then. My PS3 is now 6 years old, kept in a cabinet under the TV without a huge amount of ventilation, and is still going strong.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -

You should give PC games a chance maybe you won't return to consoles like me
I spend a lot of time playing Uncharted. Plus console gaming is far cheaper for me than PC gaming would be. Even if I had to replace my PS3 it'd still be cheaper overall. So I'll stick to console gaming0 -
oliviabatty wrote: »Yes PC are expensive but they have better visuals also and now there are great f2p games on PC like Dota 2, LOL, Path of Exile, Planetside 2 etc.
But its all about exclusives :P
people who want to play halo will go for xbox whatever it costs. Though if i have to choose b/t Xbox and PS i will always go with PS bcoz of uncharted, god of wars, Infamous, killzone series and now they got Last of Us also
Visuals don't make a game. The PS3 has graphics that are more than good enough. I couldn't care less about visuals - sure they help but a lot of older games are great fun and they have seriously rubbish graphics.
There's probably certain PC only games I'd be happy to play but it's not enough to make me want to go over to PC gaming. I have more than enough console games to play through first anyway lol.
The PS certainly has much better exclusives, plus the 360 seems more about just shooting games. Although technically I would now buy a PS just because of Uncharted it wasn't why I first wanted one. Personally I just prefer the PS controls, I'd go for PS even if Uncharted was on all platforms. I'd also still like Uncharted even if the graphics were to PS2 standard (or earlier).0
