    I spell it Catherine

But only because that's how my parents did it when they named my sister

I'm probably more awkward as I'm a Rebecca but everyone calls me Beki (spelt that way because in year 7 there were 3 of us so we all adopted different spellings!!)

which in the grand scheme of things, is really no big deal :).

Not for everybody. I was discussing names with a friend the other day. I had never really thought about it before but both of her children have one-syllable, four letter names. She said it is because she has a name that could have more than one spelling (it is a fairly uncommon name but not at all unheard of) and she hates having to spell it out for people all the time. She was determined that her children would not have that issue.
  • If it's for your childs name spell it Catherine or Katherine, saves a lot of correcting.

My little girl is called Scarlett though I didn't appreciate that a lot of people would spell it Scarlet when we got cards etc. My only thought was that we weren't spelling it how my husband wanted (Skarlett).
Mummy to two girls: October 2013 and February 2016
  • I'm Catherine. I was prem so dad shortened it to Kate.

Que one confused child learning to spell. But that didn't last long. I answer to either.

At Uni I changed Kate to Cate so that my initials matched, and now I've been Cate for over 10 years, and I'm happier with it than either other.

  • Oh I also have a surname that can be spelt at least 5 different ways (inc 2 different 1st letters), and don't mind having to Always spell it out, slowly, so saying "catherine with a C" each time is no bother at all!

lets face it, even Smith can be spelled in more than one way :).

I've always had to spell my surname - before I was married, and afterwards. It really doesn't bother me.

Years ago I taught a boy who had special needs who became a young father.
He made his baby daughter a card and asked me to help him write inside. I asked what her name was. He got a piece of paper out of his pocket with the words he wanted

    "I love you KT"

aims for 2014 - grow more fruit and veg, declutter

I thought it was a universally accepted truth that if in doubt, you spell it D-A-V-E.
