    I'm a Catherine with a C.
But only my family call me Catherine. The wider world shorten it to Cathy. But as long as they spell it 'my' way I don't mind.
I do have the odd person who despite knowing me years will spell it with a K or shorten it to Kate..
My own children have short names....!!

** No offence to anyone with alternative spellings or called Kate !!
Just find 2 versions of my name more than enough !!

I have seen so many spellings of my name over the years, and even spelling it out to people doesn't help as generally people hear the C or K then stop listening.
Shorten it to Kat most of the time these days, so at least there are only 2 options

Agree with PaulineB above though about different pronunciations, though never heard it pronounced Kath'reen'
The 2 common different ways to pronounce it are kathrin and kathERin.

Personally, despite liking the name, I wouldn't give it to a child of mine, as it gets so annoying having to spell it all the time. Daughter has a name that has only 1 spelling

Im in Scotland and Catherine is pronounced like een at the end. Kathryn is pronounced like in at the end. But other countries might have different pronunciations.
Ive also known someone who was called Catherine and it was pronounced like nine at the end rather than with een.

I'm also in Scotland, with a family full of Catherines - none of them are pronounced "een", all are "in". Possibly a regional variation?

There's an interesting history and etymology of the name here:

I think Catherine is a lovely name whichever way you spell it. However, if you are asking because you intend to name your baby this then I would think about whether you intend it to be shortened to Katie/Katie (which are usually spelt with a K) as, if you do, it makes more sense to me to spell the full name starting with a K too. This will make it a bit easier for a little girl learning to write her name and her initials will also stay the same regardless of whether she is using her full name or its diminutive.

    Katherine or Catherine.

I've never known anyone with the other spellings.

None of my Scottish Catherine rellies were 'een' either. Cathleen/Kathleen was the only 'een'.

I have an aunt and a cousin both "eens" though I have only heard it in the West of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

I agree. I find it strange that Kate's (Will and Kate) full name is Catherine. Good point about learning to write!

I also vote for Katherine or Catherine. I speak from experience that Kathryn isn't that common, and people more generally assume it's the longer version.
