How do you spell Katherine?

My great aunt was Elizabeth shortened to Beth, I quite like that.
The thing that always got me was shortened names that weren't shorter, ie Harry for Henry or Jack for John.Kate short for Bob.

DD1 Is Catherine on her birth certificate as chosen by her dad, however she also gets called Katey which was the name on her hospital birth record chosen by myself, she is also called Cathy by her teachers, Cat, Catarina, Kathryn, Cate, Kate, Katherine and a whole host of different spellings of her name!!!! Don't think it bothers her though in fact its become a bit of a family joke and she sometimes has to explain to friends that although the long and formal spelling of her name is Catherine the shortened version which she prefers to use and which we all use is Katey. I'm English and her dad is Scottish and when she was born there was a real discussion about how it should be spelt which 14 years on has never been quite fully resolved!!! Hasn't been a problem though.loobylou2.Proud to be dealing with my debts and aiming to sort out the mess in 2013!!!!:eek:0

I've also come across Lily as short for Olivia....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0

I am a Katherine so that sounds just fine to me!.“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent".0

I've known a Catherine, Katherine & Cathryn.
I have a personal preference for Catherine. In general, I like the letter 'C' but am not so keen on 'K'. No idea why, I must like curves!0 -
Lanarkshire people do speak a bit funny, maybe Wishaw people speak the funniest out of all of them, obviously you can pronounce things differently even from ten miles away.
Yes, yes we dobeing from Motherwell, I also hear Cather-ine and Cather-een
And Caitlyn is *not* considered to be to be the same name, nor is Kathleen. Weird how strong differentiations in language persist in some areas and not others:AStarting again on my own this time!! - Defective flylady! :A0 -
My youngest daughter is Catherine but shortened to Katie, just to complicate matters it's actually her middle name!Norn Iron Club member 273:beer:0

My GCSE form group had three people with that name.
There was one Kathryn (known as Kathryn), one Katherine (known as Kate) and one Catherine (known as Cat).We may not have it all together, but together we have it all

I'm from Lanarkshire, and would say Catherine, not Cath-reen, but I do hear the latter around these parts
