I have never known Callie to be short for Catherine though?

I agree. I don't think it makes sense. I do think Callie is really pretty though, but maybe as someone else said, Caroline makes more sense? Or read here http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/baby_names/a1441926-Callie-nice-as-a-nickname-but-short-for for other suggestions...

I know an Elizabeth who calls herself Lilly. Everyone always gets really confused when they find out she is really Elizabeth...the assume she is either just Lilly, or Lillian if it is short for anything. (Note to self...Lillian is a pretty name!)

Spelt like that - the boys way, rather than Lesley?

This thread has been a relevation, initially I thought there were only 3 'legitimate' spellings Catherine, Katharine and Kathryn. My mum has two cousins on the same side of the family called the first 2 versions of the name. I've always thought it odd that 2 brothers called their child the same name even if they did spell it differently (and taking into account there's a bit of an age gap between their daughters).

My eldest is known by the short abbreviation of his full name. I find it a PITA when filling out forms, that I fill in full name because it's semi official and then he has to spend his time telling everyone to call him short version. I don't fill out short version automatically because then I am concerned no one will find his details. There was a reason I didn't repeat the same when I had another child 3 years later.

The website 'behind the name' agrees with you re Callie

The book Lace by Shirley Conran the character Lili, her full name is Elizabeth.

ETA - Is your friend foreign or are her parents, because variants of Lilli for Elizabeth are shown for different countries on the same website.

I don't think it is a commonly accepted abbreviation though is it?

I edited my post whilst you were typing, looks like it is in some countries though not the spelling 'Lily'. In the book Lace Lili is from an Eastern European country, though I can't remember where.
