Self service tills at supermarkets

I put a ten pound note into the Morrisons self service till to pay for my items but it didn't register. The manager person came over as a queue was building up to open it and said he couldn't see the money and id have to come back in the morning after he had counted all the money to see if there was ten pounds excess. As all of this was going on a queue was building up and people staring. Then the assistant lady cancelled my purchases and the ten pound note came out.
I feel very annoyed at being classed as a liar and having my time wasted and being embarrassed like this just because they have poor technology. What would i get from complaining to them about this. Has this happened to anyone before ? :(

Nobody has said you're a liar, your money was returned, presumably you were allowed to then pay for your shopping, what more do you want? Classic compo chaser, you are unlikely to get much sympathy on here.

As above, they haven't called you a liar. But you can't honestly expect them to just give money to people without checking the till first? If they did you'd get every chancer trying it, saying they put £50 in the machine.

If you feel that strongly about it then don't shop there anymore. Be aware however that Tesco, Sainsburys and Asda self service tills also have issues sometimes.

Similar thing happened to me, although I stood my ground and they checked the till there and then. Low and behold... the £20 note was there.

I do agree, when this situation happened you are made out to feel as if you are trying it on.

Not as many as Morrisons! Why they opted for an in-house software rather than software used by every other supermarket I don't know.. potentially a reason why people are stopping shopping there! That and the constant queues.

That could be because a lot of people do try it on.

But then it works both ways
I've been accused of being a thief a number of times by customers when they were mistaken about how much money they gave

    The usual story-,managers don't have a clue!
Morrisons isn't my nearest supermarket any more , but when I used to shop there a lot, I did notice the self service tills did seem to have a lot of problems.
Surely it's all about how you handle this situation.
If he'd have said " I'm terribly sorry madam/sir , could I have your phone number and I'll contact you first thing in the morning" , you'd have been happier.
A manager should have responded in this way.

Only point here is that I wouldn't have accepted the 'next morning' thing (if it had gone that far) I'd have said "no, it's OK. Can you please check the till now whilst I wait"

Well I used to work in retail at a few different companies and it was always possible. Maybe not convenient, but always possible.
Large stores have cash office staff to count the tills. It's just a case of somebody swapping the float over and taking it upstairs.

well i worked in the cash office in a supermarket, and it is not always possible.

the cash office was not manned 24/7 and theres not always someone who is trained to do it in the store.

the store i worked at didn't have anyone in cash office on sundays, so monday morning meant they needed to cash up the tills for both saturday and sunday before they could even think about checking if it was correct for monday.

also if the system is in the middle of processing something, you can't stop it to check if a till is correct in the middle

And how do you know the manager didn't respond like that? The OP doesn't say what or how things were said.

You seem to be assuming that the manager and staff were rude and unhelpful, whereas it could have been the OP who was rude and belligerent and kicking up a fuss, which judging from the tone and content of the OP, (the manager person, seeking compo), might or might not be the case.
