Self service tills at supermarkets

    Your comment makes no sense at all.

    The supermarket would put it's customers and staff at risk if they were to empty their self service till and count it out everytime someone complained that they'd lost a tenner.

    It would be the easiest way to clobber a staff member and make off with the till takings.

    That's not the easiest way.

    All the tills that have cashiers sat in front of them are a far bigger risk.
    Their cash drawer full of cash is opened every time a customer pays.

Every single retail or hospitality outlet I have worked in have recognised this. its a PITA - but in a dispute the customer has the right to demand a till check - the customer should not have to walk out of the store out of pocket.
    and it doesn't actually take much time - five minutes at most! especially with modern tills.

    But we're talking about opening up a self service check out, removing the cash and walking it through the open store to cash it up, just for the sake of checking whether it's a tenner out. My local store transfers any paper money straight to a secure lock box fixed under the checkout and only keeps a tiny float in the till itself. Mind you they were raided a couple years back.

    Yes, they wont be done during the busy times, and when they are, they require a security guard there watching and 2 staff members.

    plus it takes awhile to cash up self service, theres alot more money in them than in the normal tills. Plus theres a specific procedure to follow when opening them. The note draws have security seals on them which need to be replaced after its been counted. All these things take time to do properly

    its not that simple. How can you cash up a till if you dont know its previous balance. There is more to it than simply counting whats in the till. You also have to count all the money that has been sent from that till for the whole day, if the previous day has not been proessed, then all that needs to be done as well, it can be alot of sorting and counting, which can certaintly take longer than 5 minutes if theres alot.

    And thats assuming there is someone available to actually do that.

    And in the store i worked at, if it happened on monday morning, then both saturday and sunday need to be balance first
