I had the TV on when I was cleaning yesterday...
on This Morning they had a phone in about cheaters, and a man whose wife had cheated had phoned in. The interviewer asked him if he was with someone else now, and he replied that he's had relationships since, but was now single and "I prefer being single".

The interviewer immediately said oh you're a nice guy, I'm sure you'll meet someone soon, oh you won't be single for long...

I'm sure she meant well, but it seems people just don't get the idea that someone could choose to be single, they don't know how to respond to it.

    Hello gang

Ellie - I get that 'oh you should find a man' when all I want to be is single. I am happier with my own company.

Life has been a bit carp lately, during dad's funeral I noticed that my eye sight in my left eye was not as good as it should have been (I only had peripheral vision in that eye anyway). I went to the eye hospital on Wednesday and was told that I have now lost my sight completely in that eye:( It explains why I keep falling over because I just don't see things. I will be learning to use a cane so that I can get around safely without me bumping into things or people bumping into me. I will also be receiving help to apply for PIP again - hopefully this time I will get it.

Had a scare on Wednesday night when I was out watering my pots, I heard growling and snarling behind me and slowly turned to see two large dogs in my garden. I backed slowly towards the house as they padded towards me - showing their long teeth. How I managed to get back into the house without tripping over anything I do not know. Had to call the police dog handlers to come out (dog wardens had finished for the day) - these dogs came from the chavvy neighbours who don't look after them and as a consequence they are not socialised with strangers. The chavvy owners didnt seem that bothered. I am now scared to go into the garden because I cannot see the dogs if they approach me from the left side.

Mentioned the dog incident to mom tonight and she came up with a variety of suggestions a) we sell this house and buy somewhere else for me to live, b) she knock down her double garage and build a two storey extension so that I would have my own lounge/diner as well as bedroom and a shower room. Her kitchen would be extended and I could share it, we would rent out my house. Erm I am not ready to be moving in with mom just yet.

Had a good day yesterday and today with my voluntary job - it would seem that I have a knack for selling. I also went to the jobcentre and have to see a different advisor (it was my old DEA) and he was really helpful (he also made me laugh).

Money is extremely tight at the mo - but at least I have food to eat and there is stuff in the freezer. Mom is coping but she says there are too many meetings with banks and solicitors - she is still sorting out dad's estate. Life goes on. BTW since dad passed away I have taken to sleeping in bed with my aged teddy bear - he provides comfort and is very quiet.

Hope all is well, when my eyes are feeling less tired I will try and catch up with all the news.

Sorry to hear about your vision, Horace. That sounds very tough. There will be other options available to you to help you retain your independence, if you want to.

Ellie - An ex colleague once told me that the good thing about a bad haircut is that it is only a few weeks away from being a good haircut :). Needless to say, I think, he was a man, so hadn't a clue, really :rotfl:

I've had a busy old week with work and fostering training. I'm working most of this weekend, so looking forward to next weekend already :rotfl:

Apart from that, my lottie is now suddenly overflowing with a glut of produce :p. I go for the feast and famine cycle approach. :rotfl: My potatoes were healthy yesterday, but have been struck down by blight today, so I've taken all the tops off, just in time before a load of rain would have washed the spores into the ground and into my spuds. I've dug some spuds up, lovely size, lovely taste. Yum! :T

As for new cookers, I still marvel at mine - everything works. I had got so used to most of the old one not working, and what did work, needed cajoling. A new cooker is indeed a wonderous thing.

Nothing exciting happening, I just seem very busy. Trying to track down a decent painter & decorator, as well as a new electrician - pain but got to be done :(

Hope you are all doing ok

    LB xx

As for this....it annoys me soooooooooooo much that society, despite HUGE NUMBERS of singlies, STILL thinks we all have to be coupled up, like we have an illness or something that needs to be avoided.

I think it's because coupled up people are uncomfortable with single people. Single women are a particular menace apparently! It's a pity as I know quite a few couples who wish they were anything but. Often due to finance, but also due to fear, people stay together however unhappy they make each other.

I was reading a while ago that the " problem" with women choosing to be single in their thirties and beyond is so bad in China that the government have taken to referring to this group of women as the " leftover women". Imagine a regime so terrified of single women that they have to give the whole group a disparaging name! The women there are not bothered, they live with friends or alone, have good jobs, earn their own money and date men as they choose. Seems difficult to knock it as a way of life really :D

    Bexster :)

Horace, sorry to read your eyesight is getting worse.
Scary moment with the dogs...is your garden open plan? Have you any fences/gates which could be heightened/locked?

I wonder if the government has a name for the single men in their country as well?

My DH used to say this too...what's the difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut? About 4 weeks...
(but then he was happy for his sister to cut his in the kitchen, when blood could be drawn from ears or knuckles...)

I dyed mine blonde tonight, well it's summer so why not?

I was stripping the last of the wallpaper today and stepped off the ladder thinking I was on the last rung...I wasn't! You know that horrible jarring when the ground isn't where you think it should be? My back and ribs are aching, needs to be better by tomorrow, I have a lot of work on next week :(

LB, I thought you had a burly electrician lined up? What happened, did he let you down?

Ellie, that comment about only seriously beautiful women can pull off the short haircut is seriously judgemental! Don't you take any notice. I'm heartily sick of other women judging me on my appearance. Apart from anything else, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. :D

I'm sorry you're not happy with your haircut and agree about most hairdressers...as soon as I find a fab one, they leave!

I've had some horrendous experiences through my lifetime. One of the worst was in my thirties when I'd grown my hair so it could be cut, razor style...I spent weeks going to another hairdresser to right the wrong, but then they went too far...:j

What is it with hairdressers...they go that bit too far.

Remember though...there's always the wig option :p

And regarding excess single women, after the first world war there was a 'surplus' of women...they were very much maligned. There is a good book by Virginia Nicholson, Singled Out.

Katherine Holden is also good but I've not read all of her stuff.

I did tell her a friend had suggested a wig Byatt, gave her a laugh :rotfl:
She's actually really nice, full of chat and no uncomfortable silences, so she's forgiven one too-short cut :)

On the plus side, it'll be ages before I have to go back :rotfl:

I think my worst look from the past was the shaggy perm with BIG glasses, I thought it was nice at the time...

I like the look of that book, and also one she's written about women in the 50s, my amazon wish list is very long!
