The staff in these eating establishments are actually showing
an uncaring and disrespectful attitude to their fellow human beings, and I suspect they would not like their own mothers treated in such a manner. It's a bigger problem than just their profit margins and money-making, it's a total disregard for other people. But then the world is full of people not caring for others, how do you change that? Huge question!

Compare them to the lady called Mary, who welcomes everyone to her establishment, how much nicer to make people feel happy.

(and re the money making...I've eaten alone in a hotel restaurant, been treated very nicely...and then returned several times with a group of people, on my recommendation...they don't know the single diners circumstances, and what "word of mouth" non/recommendations will arise from their treatment of that diner.)

Did you click on the link at the bottom of the article to readers experiences of dining alone?
One comment by a gent from Glasgow says

"Although I should love to eat out at fine restaurants by myself, I have always regarded solo diners as very deeply sad, and I should almost die of shame to be amongst their number".

I don't know how you can argue against attitudes like that.

I'm afraid that whilst "us singlies" have that attitude towards ourselves, then we are our own worst enemies.

    :(

I think on the article I attached, there will also be an element of cultural differences to take into account, too. However, it's still a sad fact that singlies are not comfortable dining alone even in the UK, but it does definitely depend on the establishment how welcome or not you feel.

    :(

And now I've finished my cheese and crackers, (on my own at home where I feel comfortable :rotfl:), I'd better get back to work.

Re: the solo dining.... I alternated between being sad and angry reading that article.

I don't understand why people can't just be treated equally as people... irrespective of what activity they are doing and whether they are a single, in a couple or a in a group?

I'm very comfortable eating on my own in hotels - there are usually lots of other single travellers dotted around. And quite happy in cafes (usually with a book/laptop or failing that my phone with wifi/kindle books to stop me feeling self-conscious and getting bored). I'm less comfortable eating on my own in 'ordinary' restaurants. Maybe it's something I need to be braver about... plenty of my male colleagues wouldn't think twice about it, and don't see why they should be stuck with hotel food.

Oops sorry synonymous, I didn't realise there was an age limit on the will writing.

We have been to see the solicitor today...the bad news is that there IS a way to hurry through an imminent house sale, but only if the house is in England...in Scotland we have to do it all in the right order (ie. the buyer will likely back out because getting probate will take months). One of those moments when you wish the law was UK wide, not just England. I had done some research online and suspected it didn't apply to Scotland.

So I'm doing my best to find my "calm vibes" and my "it will all get sorted eventually vibes" :)
It's a complicated estate, so will likely take months, so I can't be worried about it for months!

I was really nervous before we went, but the most stressful part was driving my parents (because they need dropped at the door) and having my driving faults pointed out :rotfl:

That's rubbish news about the law being different Ellie; the English law sounds more sensible & real world (listen to me, like I know anything about the law :rotfl:). From Dad's date of death to getting probate granted to me took 8 calendar weeks, but there was a bank holiday in there & it was August so they may have been slightly understaffed with summer holidays. I didn't sell his house through an estate agent, it went to auction (needed loads of work ).

If I was buying what I thought would be my forever home then I'd wait for it, but I guess it would also depend on what was happening below me in the chain. I hope it works out for you.

Oh, & when you do sell, don't complete on a Friday if you can help it. Sure you all remember the funny story of how the chain stopped during one of our house sales & we ended up homeless for the weekend, with people moving in what was still our house before they'd actually bought it :rotfl:

Whole story is here for anyone who fancies an Oh I didn't know that could happen moment (& I erased exOH out of the story, but it was in fact the family home that he was selling, since I wasn't on the mortgage etc. Wish I could erase him so easily from the rest of my life :D)
She sounds like a handful JKS! It isn't reasonable to have you take her to detention and sit with her. I have never had a parent do that and it defeats the object of the exercise.

I very much enjoy arranging lunchtime detentions as it allows me to get my marking done so it doesn't come home :D
If I was your daughters teacher and I thought she believed I was being punished too I would tell her that too!!

I agree punishment ultimately isn't the solution. She is clearly very unhappy. I wonder if there is anyone she can talk to about it? I don't necessarily mean a professional, but someone not do close to her. I believe school can " force" her, but only with 24 hours notice to stay after school and your written agreement.
I must say, having worked in schools where parents have their children where they work, I would never do it. Everyone seems to change the goalposts!!

    Bexster :)

I am considering looking for another job. Seriously. She only has to do Y11 there, & should then go to college, so I'm hoping I can hang on for another year as I like the people I work with & its only a 10 minute walk. But I fear I'll always be known as X's mother, even when she's left :D

Relieved to hear it isn't commonplace for parents to accompany their offspring to detention - but then our school does like to think of itself as a bit of trendsetter so maybe it'll catch on :rotfl:

Although she still has to study to get into college, which hasn't sunk in yet. She likes one particular college, & is visiting 2 more but have just found out today that the bus service to the furthest away college is being cut & as one of the bus companies is dropping that route completely (not profitable enough ) & the other bus company's timetable couldn't get there in time to start. Or get her home if she wanted to stay later than 5 (college library open till 8, never mind all the social events on). Or get her there on the weekend at any time. Public transport is seriously going down the pan in my county, don't know about anywhere else :(

The journey by bus is only 20 minutes, but she has to walk for 30 minutes each way to get to the actual stop (as there are no buses from my end of town to the other in the morning - earliest is 9.28. It is a 17 minute car drive door to door if traffic is OK :()

Am hoping she doesn't like that college :D

Have your sunnies turned up yet LB? I was convinced mine would appear today as I don't need them now for ages, but no luck yet. May have to tidy more rooms
& as for some happy ending I'd rather stay single & thin :D

Nope - I haven't looked though, been too busy or asleep to think about them, tbh. Looking at the weather forecast, I somehow doubt I'll be needing them any time soon :(.

How is it NOT Friday night? Can anyone tell me?! Honestly, I feel like I've worked two weeks already and it's still only piggin Wednesday

It's not Friday? :( I really thought it was when I read BookWorms post saying she was on holiday now, disappointed now :o

I can assure you both that you will definitely not need your sunglasses this year...I bought a pair of shorts today in preparation for the hot weather :rotfl:

I'm feeling quite grumpy today, I haven't been out in the fresh air, and I've done about 2 hours of ironing, it's not been a fun day.

    Shorts?!

No more sunny weather until they are in the bin, methinks! I hope they were reduced to correlate to the expected use! :rotfl:

Well, I've had another day of presenting and conference calls from my kitchen, so am all talked out, knackered and grumpy ;). The good thing is that the work to home journey was just a step from the kitchen to the living room, comforting drink in hand to help with a relax.

But my fostering social worker texted me today to say she was very impressed yesterday, so that has given me a boost :)
