Hi, hope everyone's had a good day.
Anyone been watching the interior design challenge on BBC this week? It's set me off thinking how I'd love my rooms to look so I've started making up some mood boards of my own and looking at paint colours. Problem is I like that many different styles I have trouble making my mind up. It's all wishful thinking as much as anything, money wise I think I'll have to tamper my wishes down a bit but it's kept me out of mischief today anyway and it's nice to have some dreams. I've seen parts of one episode...and am watching the latest as I type. I love looking in houses/homes to see what people have done. I think I've seen every episode of Location, Location, Location, and Escape to the Country at least 3 times over
It doesn't seem to matter what I try in my own home, it simply ends up homely and cosy, never smart or sophisticated. It mirrors me, I guess!
I must admit, I don't like the trend that seems to be turning homes into clones of 4* hotels...they never seem to have any personality.
Well, I'm glad to be home after a very long day across Manchester way yesterday. The building work on my porch is romping on and looking fabulous, and I've given myself an easier work day today, and am now catching up on here/finishing my will notes etc. And then, I'm going to have a lazy night, feet up, doing nowt!! :T

Agree with all the comments on the benefits of living alone. Sometimes, it is just bliss to shut the world out, and not have to make any effort at all.0 -

...and I have to admit that "homemaker" I most certainly ain't...:rotfl:
So, I'm now wondering just what 4 star hotels look like...as I suspect my house is in the process of becoming distinctly impersonal right now. But, to me, I take the view that I'll do that and just modernise/clean it up/brighten it up and you name "modern style basic fashion of now" and that's how I'm doing it. It will be all HUGE HUGE tiles in the bathroom/plain neutral carpets and so on by the time I've finished and that will be fine with me and I might bother about finding/actually find a way to put "personality" in it later. I just accept that I'm not a home-maker and don't have any personal style housewise, so as long as its all bang up to 21st century standards/styles it will do me.
I know people vary on that...but, its just plain easiest to just say "If its standard/modern/21st century...then that's what I'll have" and not have to give any thought to it.
I managed to elicit comments from people about "What a nice atmosphere the place has got" about my last house...so maybe I'm getting something right...despite no tastes to speak of:rotfl::rotfl:
I like quirky...but I'm not sure I could live with it personally and I freely admit to not having the foggiest idea as to how to do it..0 -

Oh, I just think each to their own, and whatever makes anyone happy is right for them.
I do tend to think though that this is the core of the problem "how to do it".... quirky isn't done, imv, it just happens, but you have to have a quirky mind to achieve it. I haven't, that's for sure.
My own home is evolving, shall we say :rotfl:...I can't afford to get it all done, so it simply keeps evolving as I see things I like and can afford.
I feel sad to have lost my rickety old porch...romantic and charming, even though completely rotten. My new porch is so posh in comparison, but it doesn't make me feel the same. Even though it is a million times smarter and will be pretty when finished and has roses growing over it.0 -

Hopefully when the roses have got established and it's weathered a bit the new porch will grown on you and take on a character you like.
I can only make plans and dreams at the moment. My central heating is kaput. It kept failing last year and I kept having it patched up but it just needs completely redoing, things don't last forever and it's had it's day. Decided it was pointless spending money to patch it up again so just switch it off for the year, I'm thankful it's been a mild winter up to press. The boiler also when kaput in November which was annoying but I'm coping. Hoping to get it all sorted around March / April time, I'd also like an old fire place taken out but depends how far finances will stretch. No point doing any decorating until I've got all that work done. When I did my bathroom I went for shower board rather than tiles.....No more grotty grouting to keep clean and underfoot I didnt want ceramic so got a vinyl tile that matched in, nice and cosy on the tootsies - plus just a swish & swipe.....my kind of cleaningJan - June Grocery spends = £531.61
July - Aug Grocery spends = £219.21
Sept - Grocery spends = £ 32.530 -
