I think I'd quite like to be a polling clerk, although I've never applied. (Hadn't thought about aching arms though )
Mind you , my local station always looks quiet, there might be quite a bit of sitting around with not much to do, which would make it a very long day.
I applied to be a census clerk once...didn't get accepted, but it did lead to another job, so the effort wasn't wasted.
Managed to get loads done today, gave myself a talking to about how if I want to do all the improvements in my house I have to actually get on with it, no-one else is going to do it!
I'm on a countdown to summer...and fed up it's still so cold.

3for holidays, and Ellie, I was thinking of doing counting but was seriously put off when the person with me said what was involved...graphs and stuff:eek: very small graphs so putting a point in is hard.
Not much walking about, not much chance to eat or drink or go to the loo...the really busy stations have it hard.
Plus our council didn't pay travelling expenses for the training, which for me was a 60 mile round trip. I say training, basically a power point presentation which didn't really help. We also had to ask for confirmation of name even when they handed their card in (which isn't compulsory), so I got a few, understandably, snarky comments. I don't do people.
Having said all that, it's an experience. I've done it twice now. Ill be 67 by the next election so can't see me doing it then...
Another edit, you don't necessarily get your local station, I was lucky this time.0 -

Now I've read that I've changed my mind, sounds like too much hassle.
As a voter I'd be majorly put out if I turned up to vote with my card, and they wanted extra ID. I don't carry any on me. And if it's not compulsory, who's it "catching out?"
Talk about making your job harder than it needed to be Byatt!

I've always handed over my polling card and haven't been asked to confirm my name. Isn't that a bit dodgy asking people to confirm their full name in public? Someone could overhear the details and know where you live and therefore have access to your identity! It is highly unlikely that confirming the voters name would prevent a case of impersonation.A good life is when you assume nothing, do more, need less, smile often, dream big, laugh a lot, and realise how blessed you are.

Gawd knows, they didn't have to provide extra ID...although a few showed their driving licenses when they didn't have the card but I didn't have to look at those. They don't actually have to bring the card, but it helps the poll clerk find them...not so bad when it's a small place but pretty important in a big place. Most people came in and gave their name first though...;)
Ellie, they had to 'confirm' their name by telling me...I know, I know...
As for the confirmation of name, it's in case someone finds a card in the street, although as one voter said, he'd looked at the card when he picked it up... in the end I just kept my head down and asked. I felt ridiculous
(I was also expected to confirm their address but gave up on that...don't tell anyone...)0 -
Surprised (as others were) to hear we are supposed to confirm our name. No-one asked me! I'd heard before that it is a long day for the poor souls working the desk. Okay, perhaps, at a busy station with lots of folk through the door, but time must drag at some of the more rural ones.

Evening All.
I'm feeling quite pleased with myself as had a very easy but tasty tea tonight. I threw some veg, herbs, seasoning, stock cube and water into the slow cooker before work...and arrived home to a yummy veggie stew. Went down a treat with some lovely crusty rolls I nipped out to get at lunchtime
Not much else to report from me... a very mundane Tuesday.0 -
