I'm a Ms and prefer it over Mrs or Miss :p

I was a Mrs and reverted back to my maiden name after my divorce, but do not feel that Miss is appropriate.

It really annoys me to be automatically called Mrs Springdreams, simply because of my age and the fact that I have a son.

Is your son a Springdreams? I often get called Mrs xxx (sons surname) which isn't my name, never has been

I have never been married so always been a Miss, at what age do people think it becomes inappropriate to be known as a Miss? I am 40 this year:eek: so perhaps I had better think about becoming Ms?

It's an unfortunate thing.....but in my experience MEN usually decide whether to call you Love, Mrs, or your name! I think they have an instinctive radar about that!

I have to say I dont recall anyone, male or female calling me Miss, even when I were a young un!

Nowadays, I'd kill someone if they called me Mrs. I just now prefer to be called my first name, and followed by surname if the person doesn't know me.

That seems to be more common now. When I get the phone calls from the bank or whatever, it is " can I speak with Melanzana X please", and that just fine!

A title is used n Airplane bookings etc. to gather if you are male or female I'd say.

But that can be overcome with a tick box for gender...

Hmmm, note to self, tell them this!

But I'm not hung up about it. It's life really innit?

BookWorm Happy Birthday, hope you have a lovely evening.

Byatt That can't have been very nice to witness. I don't know if there is much you can do in that situation, if you had asked her if she was ok I am sure she would have answered yes as the man was there. I saw something similar myself today only it was the women telling the man in no uncertain terms what to do, he refused so she said she would kill herself! From his response it wasn't the first time she had threaten this so I don't think there was any reason for concern. All we can do is hope that people will get the help they need but until they admit or can see themselves that they need help unfortunately it is unlikely to happen.

Mrs Bones A spinning wheel would be a fantastic thing to learn. I do remember having a go once at a open day somewhere, it wasn't easy. I still need to learn how to use a sewing machine before I attempt anything more complicated.

Hi Singlies, I'm a bit late joining the thread if I may? I'm a happy singleton, can't imagine being any other way now.

re. Ms - I've never been married, and I'm 50. I've been Ms since my twenties!

I work in school, and everyone female is "Miss" whether they are Mrs, Miss or Ms in reality. I like that.

I'm a bit work-zombied at the moment so can't put a decent post together... will try again at the weekend, hopefully! I am reading along as much as I can though.

Going slightly off topic but I've always fancied learning to use a spinning wheel, anyone here ever had a go at spinning?

It's interesting what you say about spinners earning good money CC, that was the same with pillow lace makers. My great great grandmother would have been the main earner in the home in the 1800's as she would have earned more than her farm ag labourer husband and after he got blinded in an accident I'm sure that it became even more essential she earned a good wage.

I had avery brief go at a local fair years ago, not your average fair though as it only had literally hand crafts and nothing new, i can imagine it's very relaxing and you could easily go into a trance doing it and find the whole day had gone by.

A woman I used to work with did it, taught it, and would do the fairs etc. They aren't at all fairs though for sure as quite rare for people to do it now. If you google it you may find someone local if you're lucky.

Edit, I have lots of lace stuff, and embroidery, some my family made, but i'm not entirely sure which as my great grandmother had a pawn shop so it all gets a bit blurred where things came from and who made what. There was also 13 of them (her children that is) so working out initials for them all and then their families etc is a nightmare. It's nice to have though. Every now and again I get it out and look at it.....being a hoarderish type of person.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.

    Also just to say...

I don't care how much you love your children.....DO NOT let them paint their room Barbie pink, nightmare to flipping cover.

Coat 1 on second wall. Done in now...so off for some tv and a glass of freezing cold pear cider (have come off alcohol waggon it appears for today).....but I am meant to be on my hols......my excuse and i'm sticking to it.

Happy Birthday, Bookworm. So glad you've had a happy day

You're right, it is all about midset...a minor thing like no food  shouldn't spoil your birthday lunch :rotfl:

Did you keep me a slice of cake?

Re Miss, Mrs, Ms etc. I'm sorry to confess I have always felt slightly ashamed of Miss...never having been married, it's always felt like a badge of shame that people will think that no one has wanted me enough to marry me. :o

I gave up long ago correcting assumptions of Mrs. It's just more hassle and takes more breath than it's worth, to correct this. I think I would prefer no title at all.

Having said that, I love being "Madame" in France, but that's maybe saying more about it being said by sexy Frenchmen :rotfl:

Starting to feel I'm making a wee bit of progress on the old will making - I have my notes typed up, agreement with a trusted friend to clear my house/look after my pets, and an appointment with a solicitor next week. I based my solicitor selection on the cost (they all quoted the same - £100 + VAT), so then on how friendly and approachable the receptionist was...as two were automated press this, press that, and one was a real live human being who gaily laughed when she dropped her pen, guess which one I chose :T

Oh, I knew there was something I wanted to mention - for those of you thinking of wills etc...remember if you have pension plans, you can complete Expression of Wish forms for lump sum payments after death. I'm glad I've remembered mine or toxic brother would be getting a lovely surprise....not after tonight as that's tonight's urgent jobbie... :)

And while I was on a roll, I have also made an appointment with an IFA to discuss my pensions plans...I want to retire asap (I can dream, eh?), and need to understand much more about what is possible... prepare for me being depressed after next week's appointment, but honestly the thought of 20 odd years more of this is more than I can bear!

Off across country for a meeting tomorrow. Not looking forward to the drive in fog and rain with icy roads thrown in. Up at 4.30am too, so I'm off to get on top of my chores. I'll say night night now.

    LB xx

Meanwhile... On the other side is a very emotional story about a woman who decides to end her life because of the tragedy of cancer.

I am watching through one eye ( don't follow it at all).

My youngest sister died from Ovarian cancer in the Summer of 2013.

There were times when I couldn't look at her she was so uncomfortable with what she looked like, and was going through.

The Hospice movement sorted it all out, and I cannot praise them enough.

    I am in tears now.

Sorry folks, but it's still very raw. There are no rules for grieving are there?
