I wondered if you had white stuff ellie, I have some too but only about an inch with more forecast for tomorrow or even Saturday. Spoke to mum earlier and she lives 4 miles away from me and she has no snow at all - I guess I am the wrong side of the hill.

Been trying to sort stuff out but getting nowhere fast - feeling a bit meh, keep sneezing and occasionally having coughing fits but other than that I feel fine. Made some chicken soup today using the old carcass from Sunday lunch, some pepper, herbs, onions and water.

Ventured out of the back door today into the covered side entry (open at one end) to dump some stuff in the recycling box. I was soon back in the house because it was bitterly cold and I hadn't put my coat on.

Hope you are all staying warm and that you don't have any white stuff.

Re the winter weather - errr...not getting on very well with it would be the accurate answer here.

Weather as a "Force of Nature" so to say is a new concept to me pretty much, having not been used to taking it into account very much at all.

Since moving, I've been first astonished by watching how many layers of clothing many people seem to be taking off when coming to a place and now not best pleased at having to do the same myself:(.

I've been used to going out the vast majority of times (even in winter) with just a winter jacket or a raincoat slung on and quite likely not even bothering to take scarf/gloves or, if I did, chances are I'd end up taking them off and putting them in my bag. Here, I'm finding I have to have my jacket/raincoat done up and wearing scarf/gloves/hat when I go out and havent got used to the faff of having to do so yet and it makes me feel very encumbered. But I've realised I'm feeling "chesty" at intervals and guessing that may be because I've been going out dressed as normal imo and therefore had better add the scarf etc, rather than wondering why I'm feeling colder than I'm used to.

Feels bit ignorant at wondering whether the "chestiness" is down to not having worn a scarf and that is why so many people wear them here:o, ie because they knew dressing normally (imo) would cause that. Weather affecting peoples health is something I've read about in books previously.....but...errrrm....rather thought that was something that was "in past history" or way up North in Britain or the like and didnt realise I might have to take account of it nowadays and further down south.:o:(:o

An absolute howler of a gale going on here last night and I'm not used to those either, so they tend to worry me and I get concerned about the state of my house, so decided that I'd better just put earplugs in to block out the sound of it - as there was nothing I could do about it.

Guess that makes me officially a "soft Southerner" then.....LOL

Just realised my post yesterday makes it sound like I live in a mansion, taking 2 hours to clear the snow :rotfl:
No, just a normal house, I must just go slow...and I cleared it and then it snowed again, so had to do it a second time, probably had about 6 or 7 inches all told.

I'm hanging about for an hour before I venture out to work, in the hopes the temperature rises a little. A colleague isn't working today (I know the weather has put them off), so I will be given double the work. I am  about that, given that I hate driving in snow and ice, but that's the way our system works so nothing I can do about it. Some people just don't have a decent work ethic nowadays.

MITSTM, I have so many layers of clothes on that I don't even want to count them...dressing takes longer in the winter, and so much more washing! I dislike wearing a hat but do it anyway, and have a scarf on about 6 months of the year :rotfl:
(goes from woolly to trendy as it gets warmer!)

Lavender Bees, how are the chooks doing in the cold weather?

Touch wood been lucky with the snow had a light layer but seemed to have got rained away, although the weather has been getting a cold snap.

I always wear a scarf under me coat, usually a cotton ones do have a selection of knitted ones, my trouble is I sweat like a pig even in winter, I might have a thick coat on but usually just a polo shirt under it.

I should say wish me luck its vulture time got to have a blood sample taken - the lovely 12 hr fasting - bless her heart at 10pm last ngt my daughter decides to cook pancakes - I had to eat it to be polite.

Hope the weather is not to bad for everyone, take care xxxx

    Hi all

Freezing cold here - the snow is melting but it won't go completely. We had more snow overnight but still not a good dumping.

If it is dry then I will wear my ski jacket with a t-shirt underneath and a woolly hat with gloves. The ski jacket is filled with duck down so it is as warm as anything. If it is wetter, then I wear my anorak/riding jacket again with a hat and the thick scarf my mate knitted for me and gloves. I cannot abide being cold. I wear thinner scarves as it warms up.

I have managed to submit my tax return - I hope it is ok - I don't need to pay anything and they don't owe me anything. Still sorting out my pay with my former employer - they are in a pickle because of what we were told by our store manager so we all worked beyond our contract and then weren't allowed to complete our entire shifts which has messed up the system.

I haven't ventured out as I don't need to. I have plenty of food in as well as milk and bread. At least if I do go out I have some ice grippers for my boots which mum gave me - that way I won't go base over apex when I am out wandering.

Lavender Bees, how are the chooks doing in the cold weather?

Oh, they're very well, thanks Ellie. I'd go so far as to say thriving, though they are spooked by the white stuff so won't stand on it at all. I can't say I blame them! I don't want to stand on the cold stuff either :rotfl:

We have a thin layer of snow - about an inch, but it's the ice that scares me - the snow covers it, and it's so bloomin dangerous. Also the chooks' water has been frozen solid the last couple of mornings, so extra work needed re hwbs etc to transport hot water, but it's nowhere near as bad here as I've known it be in the past. Touch wood!

I've been working away, and then been working at home the past few days, so luckily have had the flexibility to be able to check on them. Strangely, since the cold snap began they have all four made sure they are in bed before the pop hole automatically shuts...hmmm....if they can do it when it's cold, why not all the time?

    Little tinkers! :rotfl:

Apart from that, work is good at the moment - long hours, and very intense, but getting good results and my two new systems will go live in the next couple of weeks...touching wood on that, too:rotfl:

Because of my long hours and working away a lot, I haven't had a chance to report my good news - I finally have my Mam's jewellery and family photos. It's been such a long hard slog with my poisonous siblings, but one night a couple of weeks ago, I found they had been delivered to me. I cried my heart out with the relief of finally getting somewhere with this, I can tell you. So, now finally, I can start to think about settling her estate, and ridding myself of the poison that has given me such heartache. It is my Mam's anniversary on Tuesday :(, but today, I am wearing some of her jewellery, and I spent last night looking through photos, and although I am still so very sad to have lost both my parents, for the first time, I feel more settled and accepting.

So yay! :)...to anyone facing a helluvan uphill struggle, keep the faith. Sometimes it does just work out how it should. It just maybe will take more effort than you think you can manage, a bit of lateral thinking, a huge amount of will power, and suddenly out you pop into a bit of sunlight.

And it's Friday as well....what more could we want? Well...ok...a lottery win...

    Have a good weekend, all

    LB xx

ETA - I love layers...I love coats, scarves, gloves, and my bobble hat. I don't care what I look like, it's more important to be warm and cosy. Roll on Spring, though...
  • Oh, LavenderBees, I'm THRILLED for you! You must be feeling very emotional about having your mother's jewellery and photographs safely in your possession, but it's the start of real closure for you. Thank goodness!

Lavender Bees, lots of good news there, I'm very glad you've finally been given your mum's jewellery and photos.

I think you have very clever hens...don't step on the white stuff, and early to bed in this cold weather :)
