    Horace,

I didn't realise there was a limit to how much staff discount people could get at M & S!

That was a bit !!!! to tell you to get out instantly:eek:. Guess you were too taken aback to say you had left your discount card at home and would drop it off to them later?, ie in order to use up the last bit on it....

Oh well...whats done is done I guess and I reckon you're entitled to break out any bottle of something alcoholic you have at home for a consolatory drink or two this evening.

For a store that is supposed to treat its staff well....well...if that's treating them well...I dread to think what counts as "bad treatment"..

If there's one lesson I learnt well over the years...it is to always be aware what you would do to you if you were a nasty employer and then be prepared for exactly that. That lesson served me very well over the years...sad to say..:(. At least that way I "saw them coming" and eventually learnt to be one or two steps ahead of them. By my final years at work I could virtually work out the timing on when I thought they would "get up to" whatever I thought they would next have in mind for me as their hapless employee.

It is a very useful way to think and I recommend it personally...:(. I had become so cynical about employers latterly that when they sprang a Huge (Unwelcome) Announcement on us at one point I spent that meeting looking around the assembled faces to see if mine was the only one looking totally unsurprised by it....

If they had given you warning of what would be your last day at work there, then I presume you would have taken spare personal clothes with you to wear and handed that uniform back at the end of the shift??? Since it was their fault you didn't have that option, then I wouldn't be in any hurry at all to hand the uniform back. I would just tell them you would arrange to drop it off the next time you were in the vicinity anyway (and mean it!), but they were, of course, quite free to drop in on you and pick it up at a suitable time you had arranged with them....

Horace - sorry to hear that you were treated so shabbily. Hopefully your application to the supermarket will be successful

Forgot to say, have signed up for three free Ou courses, it's in Martin's email, lots of choice with various hours for each course. All I need to do now is make sure I do them.

So if I say I am fed up, hit me with a wet kipper!:D

    Happy New Year Everyone,

A bit late I know, but I got bogged down in the usual paperwork sorting/shredding that I do at this time of year, making lists:- food inventory, things to do, shopping, menus - :D I love lists, unexpected visitors arrived so teas and coffee's all round as 'dry' January is being strictly observed, nothing in the house to tempt.

So now I'm catching up on everyone's news and lots of interesting comments.

:T Way to go LB on getting into the top ten

Well done Mothernerd thats a great 15 and I'm sure with determination you will achieve them and probably find that one has a knock-on effect on another.

Horace sorry to read about all of the difficulties you went through getting, then actually doing the job. Sounds as though the manager needs a bit of training himself. Good luck with your job search.

I did say that I would drop off my uniform when I am next in the area. It is their loss anyway that they have lost me (the caf! looked terrible with tables that needed clearing). I spoke to a friend who has been told she can stay for a further 2 weeks (she works 30hrs a week). I knew that my contract was up on 27 December but had previously been told to ignore that date as it was likely we would all have to work beyond our contracts. It didn't surprise me that I then had shifts to do beyond that date.

Money Permanent staff have no limit on their discount they get 20% all the time, temporary staff get a discount card with £50 loaded on it. I think the best bargain was the spuds last Sunday. It is a pity that I could not have spent more to clear the card but I could only carry so much - I also bought 2 insulated bags too which I used to transport my goodies home.

Having this new experience looks good on my CV which will stand me in good stead for the posh supermarket (posher than MnS).:D

Byatt thanks for pointing me in the direction of the free OU courses (I hadn't read the email). I have signed up for one of them Managing your People - Engaging your workforce because it will be useful for my voluntary work and also for the future.
  • Horace, That supermarket wouldn't be one that involves Wait-ing around now would it and we could all have a cup of free coffee if we visited it?;)

...on my list of places in home area I would like to be able to do a Startrek and teleport to when required.....along with a decent-size M & S I have to admit....:o and....and...and...

You are spot on Money, however, I found out last night that I did not pass their silly online test but never fear their huge parent shop will be opening in the city centre this year so there will be more opportunities. This will be the year that I get a permanent job and not mess around with temporary contracts.

Just back from SW and was pleased to learn that I had lost 1.5lbs without even trying (I had a binge on biscuits last week). It is a new year and therefore a new start.

My job for the week is to take down my decorations and pack everything away until next year. I will also sit down and do my tax return - am so pleased that the next tax return I do after this will be my last.
