Don't deter spiders, they are lovely. They eat flies and flies kill more people than man eating tigers. Even when they don't kill you flies walk all over poo and then try to walk on your food (they do worse but some of you may be eating breakfast).
Now daddy long legs bigger than your hand skittering across your face after you have turned out the lights, that's scary (I was only eight).
Sorry been on my own with 3 boys since the youngest was three. Youngest was scared of flies, spiders, wasps, bees and flies. Had to do daily examinations and evictions from the bathroom to get him in there (we had a wasp nest in the attic at one point and they were coming in through a hole in the ceiling (I fixed that as well - by copying the spiders. made a web of crossed lolly sticks, so I had something to attach filler to). Even earlier this year, he shot into my room, perched on the edge of the bed, lifted his hand to point "Wasp - on my laptop". He's six foot seven and built to match (getting better with everything but wasps, though).
It's cold, the poor spiders will die if they don't come in.My mission in life is not only to survive, but to thrive and to do so with some Passion, some Compassion, some Humour and some Style.NST SEP No 1 No Debt No mortgage0 -
Hi mothernerd
I know it's irrational but they creep me out. If they stayed out of sight it wouldn't be so bad!0 -
BookWorm - spiders everywhere are coming indoors for winter. The way to deter them is either buy some Spider Stop from Lakeland which is a spray that costs about a fiver, or you go out and collect conkers and place them on your windowsills and in cupboards where spiders might come in.
Spider Stop is made from conkers - picking up conkers from the ground is fun and cheaper because you can kick up the leaves like a child looking for the hidden ones. (oh is it just me that kicks up the leaves? lol).0 -
I'm with you on the spiders BW, I am better than I was, but having a phobia is no joke. At one stage I was scanning the room every few seconds and got every anti spider device known to man. If they stayed in one place I wouldn't mind so much. I have spider catchers, sprays etc, the catchers are only good if you can get close to them. The blow dryer type one is useless. I've used Cronulla type sprays and anything with lemon in. I have also used a fab spray outside, around Windows and doors, and lasts six monthish...it's quite strong so wouldn't use it indoors with pets. I used to get spiders on my front door which freaked me out.
I still check my bed and pillows before I settle down, and automatically scan rooms I walk into as well as shake out coats etc that have been hanging up.
It's a horrible fear and can be very restricting.
Ill pm the details of the super spray.
I haven't spotted any reduction in flies ine my house or others from having spiders.
Edit, and at my worst, when first moving into this old cottage, I researched and researched spiders and ways to deter them. It was horrible. Conkers didn't work. You can get sticky traps too but I wasn't strong enough to cope with that each morning.
Mothernerd, they will die if they come into my house! It's very warm here, so maybe that's why they have not entered yet. Eeeeek.0 -
Hi guys....
Still around, just been busy with RL.
Popped into pet shop yesterday....and the 'cats with thumbs' were hanging out it the sunshine on the rabbit hutches or in the rabbit runs....all flat out sparkers in the heat of the sun. I was beginning to think they had gone off somewhere else.....so it was good to see them again.
I'm scared of spiders too and have to kill the big ones as they freak me out....ruddy Asbo is useless and not interested in them.
My latest try is vinegar.....apparently they don't like it....so I made up a spray bottle of it, and when I get around to it I will spray it around all windows aand doors.
Hope everyone is well, will attempt a catch up at some point soon.
Oh....have been busy extending the fence at the side of the house this week.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0 -
I am afraid that I also have to kill the large spiders that come into the house, the smaller ones get chucked outside.
Dunno what to have for dinner - I forgot to get meat out of the freezer.0 -
Aw poor spiders, seems a lot of people don't like them.
I quite like the big ones, and don't kill them..I scoop them up in a plastic cup (not one we use!) and put them on the windowsill outside.
I'd just prefer that they didn't live in my bath...I go for a shower and don't notice there's a giant spider already in there until I'm nakid...so I scoop it up, and then try and put it out the window without being seen, trying to hold a bit of curtain in front of me :rotfl:
And next day they're back again...I swear to god if I put name tags on their little legs it would prove it's the same ones. How do they do it? Do they climb up the water pipes?
I never see them anywhere except in the bath.
If you could live one day of your life over again, which day would you choose?0 -
They do climb up the water pipes or even the drain pipes. Remember the nursery rhyme Incey Wincey Spider climbed up the spout, down came the rain and washed poor Wincey out.
I do try and pick them up but one ran out into the middle of the kitchen floor and I am afraid he did get stomped on. Conkers and Spider Stop spray keeps them out, I find.
Dinner tonight was bread and cheese. A joint is defrosting for tomorrow.
Found a bottle of glycerine in the pantry - use by date 2010, so I have used some of it to try and preserve some leaves.0 -
Ugh...spiders! Confesses that any beastie that steps foot over my threshold gets whacked with the nearest suitable object to hand. Have had to get rather more into "disposal mode" since moving here...courtesy of it being far from infrequent to spot a beastie indoors now that I'm in a more rural area. Add the fact I have a proper garden now and therefore have to go on slug patrol at intervals and they duly get "cold steel" as a poster elsewhere puts it.
Itching to get on and finish the work I am currently doing on the house at the moment, but am dependant on other people re when I can do it. That will be me having run out of "money for the house" before the end of the year and having to wait for more for however-long-I-have-to (ie when the rest of my pension starts heading into the bank at last, courtesy of having reached that darn revised State Pension Age of mine). At least I managed to get moved and get pretty settled-in in time before the next Major War (living in Britain you have to differentiate between Minor Wars and Major Wars, as there always seems to be at least one war on of some description). I was determined to evacuate myself to "remoter climes" before the next Major War in order not to have to spend my time with "radar on alert" not to be near potential terrorist targets at the wrong time. I have found that I have pretty good "radar" at avoiding places at just the time I need to avoid them, but I don't wish to push my luck...
Prior to my move, I did live somewhere that counted as "terrorist target territory" and it wasn't doing my nerves (or temper) any good knowing that.0 -
Morning All
Been MIA due to back problems & have been unable to do much except lie on the floor, groaning :rotfl: so nothing exciting to report. It has given me a glimpse in to how difficult life could be if I were out of action for some time - very scary. I'd assumed I'd just be able to do a lot of stuff online, but even this was out for me as typing was agony. Time to check out care agencies, just in case. I know we talked about it ages ago on this thread (or was it the Xmas thread?) & I said I'd do it, but I chickened out as it was just too depressing.
Its a bit better now, but I must limit my laptop time - will be reading this thread but possibly not posting much, so don't think I'm ignoring you all.
LL - do take the Pilates carefully. My bad back is a result of 1 lesson on a complete beginners course
No advice on keeping spiders out but this type of catcher is excellent (& sorry, but there are pictures of spiders on that link). It really does keep them trapped.
Sorry to hear that some of you are having a difficult time - life does seem quite relentless in its **** sometimes. Hugs to all& as for some happy ending I'd rather stay single & thin
