Horace - Re: your 'keen chap'. Think I would politely suggest that he tones the enthusiasm down a little or just avoid dealing with him as far as possible if you can't face that
JKS - sorry to hear you are in pain and having oven issues. I've just been looking into new ovens recently myself and my new one is being delivered on Saturday. I've opted for a Belling one. It was the best I could get for my budget and also was the one I liked the look of most. I looked online initally but then also popped to a local place and a bigger well know chain so I could see them in the flesh as the pictures are not always brilliant. One tip I do have is if the retailers site doesn't give brilliant info - cross check it on the manufacturers site. My electrician told me that .. helpful chap :T
Hope everyone else doing ok.
My day has been mad at work but on the plus side the time does go quick

BW Thanks, I have asked chap to tone it down a bit - I am all for willing helpers but don't like being railroaded.
I know that when my parents were looking for a new cooker for this house (it is their house after all) I was dragged into all kinds of stores Apollo 2000 being one of them, I saw a Belling cooker that I liked in there but it turned out that they no longer had it in stock. In her wisdom, mum bought me a Belling this time in black (probably the next model up), although it is great I do not like black because I cannot see the temperatures so have had to have bright orange bumpers put on so that I know where the off is and where the temperature is that I cook most on - Gas Mark 5. Just wish that it cleaned itself lol.0 -
Evening All
Apologies for only skimming this thread, but huge thanks to all who have given cooker related advice. I was hoping to give it some thought tomorrow on what should be a precious day off......
....but I've just spent the last few hours in A&E being treated for a chemical burn I got at work, & tomorrow I have to go to a specialist burns unit for a further check.
Really didn't see that one coming, although I guess since by now most of the standard carp that happens to most people over a lifetime has happened to me in the last few years, the carp just has to get a bit more bizarre :rotfl:
I'm sure the first A&E are only covering their derrieres so to speak, as there isn't much to see or feel, but the experts have to check it out. So its at least a 6 hour round trip for me tomorrow (would only be about 90-120 minutes if I had a car - but at least I don't have to worry about parking).
Still, kids are delighted as its another night they can have fish & chips & unadulterated TV viewing :rotfl:
Glad I have a nice bottle of red to crawl into & drown my sorrows - I've managed to open it without incident, so what else could possibly go wrong? Maybe I should start a poll & you can all post your latest "it could only happen to JKS prophecies".....
Night all & as for some happy ending I'd rather stay single & thin

Oh my JKS - you really having a rough time aren't you? Sending you very gentle dodgy hugs :grouphug: x0

I suggest you use a straw with the wine JKS. Just to avoid any wine-to-glass incidents.
Hope all goes well at the hospital.
Oh - and if it is a work-related incident, the least they can do is give you another day off to compensate for the time you've spent in hospital.0 -
JKS sorry to hear of your latest incident. Hope all goes well at the hospital.
For your oven, I could recommend Appliances Online. They were the ones I got my washer dryer from and the service was excellent.
Hope everyone has a good day - the sun is shining here which is always nice at this time of year.0 -

Are you trying to make me jealous :rotfl:
Yesterday I had a bit of a blip emotionally. My dad came over to help me take my bed apart and move it downstairs (far too heavy to do on my own) so 'our' bedroom is now empty. I had also been emailing my ex (sounds weird calling him that) during the day - we work together you see. The emails were like we used to send to each other and I couldn't help think 'what if' for a moment. Where did it all go wrong?
It all seems very final now, which of course it is, but I need to concentrate on myself and the future. If things were meant to be, we would still be together, so I have to look at it like that.
4 more nights in the current 'home' and then a fresh start. I can't wait to get out of there now.
I'm sure you'll feel much better when your in your new home, even if it feels a little odd at first - it will be your new home so try & take your time to enjoy the newness of it all (if that makes sense - it does in my head).
JustKeepSwimming - it's funny you say that about pilates. I decided to give a beginners yoga class a go for the last couple of weeks and won't return. I didn't hurt myself, but a lot of the positions seemed to be balanced on toes/lunge position. I've had all sorts of problems with my feet and since having my toes straightened, they don't want to bend in certain ways anymore! So much for a gentle exercise - I shall continue with the combat classes!
To all those thinking of Pilates - my osteopath (whom I'm getting to know quite well) feels that while it is an excellent form of exercise for those younger than me (I'm 45 & he's about 12, so I guess he means those in their 20's & 30's) & for those who have no "structural problems", it isn't so good for those of us who have become knackered by life. He recommends yoga since it "ends to pull everything back in to the mid line of the body" rather than working on very specific areas. He thinks I'll be fine to go back to Pilates when a) my back is sorted & b) when I'm a little fitter overall.
Obviously that is just one person's opinion of me doing Pilates now, & I used to do Pilates about 10 years ago with no problems. I won't be doing it again, but I'd hate to put anyone else off it.
Haven't thought about cookers much today, but am saving that treat for the w/e. Lots of helpful comments & recommendations/anti-recommendations so thanks all. Keep them coming.
I will scour this board for Remoska advice but am wondering if I can just get away with one of those for the time being? I have a working hob, microwave & bread machine (touch wood) so what do those of you who have them think?I suggest you use a straw with the wine JKS. Just to avoid any wine-to-glass incidents.
Hope all goes well at the hospital.
Oh - and if it is a work-related incident, the least they can do is give you another day off to compensate for the time you've spent in hospital.
Sadly Greenbee today was my day off, so work have got out of that one quite well. I may mention getting the time back (as it was the equivalent of a whole working day for me & was an accident at work) but I think it will go down like a bucket of cold sick.
I've been told that its my own fault for not driving (medical reasons I didn't choose, so not strictly true) & I can't expect any special treatment because of it. This has been in relation to training days at various centers - what would take a driver a normal working day to get to can take me an extra 4 hours (if I can get there at all) & work wont pay me the additional time/give me TOIL - so I don't get any training unless I suck it up, arrange childcare & accept that I'll be out of the house for 10-12 hours with all the extra cost/faff of taking food/drink etc. which, frankly I'm not prepared to do
Thankfully there were no awful effects from the chemical burn & all is well. The journey wasn't as horrendous as I thought (only 4 hour round trip) since there was a bus running that didn't seem to exist on the Traveline website which I stumbled upon when waiting for a different bus.& as for some happy ending I'd rather stay single & thin

Re. Pilates - I think a lot depends on the teacher and how body aware you are.
A lot of people don't recommend yoga for postural issues, particularly for anyone with hypermobility.
Alexander Technique may be a good place to start as it teaches awareness.
Personally I'm not keen on osteopaths, as I find them useful for pain relief but not actually fixing the problem. But everyone has different preferences and it often depends on the cause of the problem.
I have slipped discs. The osteopath can't fix that, but can help with the pain. I find it cheaper to have regular sports massage for a similar effect, and pilates classes to stabilise my back and develop core strength. My physio insists on the pilates, as does my GP. If I don't do it, I get no sympathy at all (not that I get much anyway).
Yoga I'm only allowed to do once pilates has stabilised me enough, as otherwise I tend to get very flexible without the strength to support it. Running I can now do as my core is strong enough to support it (and stop everything wobbling about.
Anyone with back problems wanting to start pilates should consider 1-2-1 classes first, or make sure that the teacher is fully informed and is observing them in the first few classes. If you're not sure what you are doing or whether it is right, then ask.
I restarted Pilates after 10 years and restrained myself for the first month to doing only level 1 of any given exercise until I was sure I was getting things right. 10 months later I can do stuff I couldn't do 10 years ago, because I have a much better teacher, as well as more patience and body awareness.0 -

Not sure when I'll be able to afford to replace it (since most of my salary is now going to my osteopath :rotfl:). Not sure when I'm going to have the time to go looking for a new one either, since I'll have to go to the big city & the bus service has been cut again last week .
How long can a family of 3 survive without an oven for
Any recommendations for decent ovens? Or ovens not to bother with?
The irony that I bought lots of food over the w/e ready to batch cook on my day off tomorrow (since I won't be doing Pilates :rotfl:) isn't lost on me - you have to see the funny side of all the carp don't you?
I sincerely hope that all of you are having a better time of it. Hugs to all :grouphug: but don't return the hug as my back is too sore.....
Gentle hugs for the back problems, but as for the oven, I would really recommend an A3G one. Not cheap, I know, but so easy to clean. I love mine.
Edit - JKS, just seen your update, hope it isn't too painful for you.Good enough is good enough, and I am more than good enough!:j
If all else fails, remember, keep calm and hug a spaniel!0 -
Remoskas are not cheap and you get them from Lakeland. You could try a halogen oven - I know my mum has one and she loves it (far better for the two of them and she doesn't always like to put the proper oven on if you see what I mean).
Today has been quite productive with Nordic Walking this morning - got a bit out of puff though due to the steep hill in the park. I had a meeting at mine to do with a local light festival, someone bought cake (we were guinea pigs because it was a chocolate and courgette cake) - I was allowed to keep a large piece so that I can have a slice of cake if I fancy it for the next two days. We now have a plan for the window we need to decorate for the light festival and I have the master plan. The theme is Sci Fi so we have gone back to the future - by using things from our past and how we want our future to be. I think we will be doing a bit of scavenging for cardboard wine boxes in our local supermarket, I am trying to borrow some grass from the Parks Dept (a few pots is all we need). It will look amazing and for the next few Mondays there will be a working party at my house - we will be cutting, gluing, painting. It will be like a long episode of Blue Peter lol.0
