OS Singlies - We Do It Our Way!

Also meant to say...remember the well publicized court case where B&B owners refused to accept a gay couple?
Pity you can't prove singlie discrimination!
I was thinking of that one too.
In that case, my own personal pov was "People are whatever they are and that's up to them...but someone is entitled to decide who to have/not have in their own home, even if its also a b & b." Anyway, it does look like the owners of that particular b & b were deliberately "set up" and I felt sorry for them. I seem to recall that that couple deliberately chose a place that had stated at the outset they wouldn't be able to stay in and it was certainly an issue that is down to personal preferences.
In this case, though, there has been no setting-up and it is quite definite singlie discrimination and many people haven't chosen singliedom as a "personal preference". Many/most? singlies are that way for reasons that aren't anything to do with their own freely-made personal choices and shouldn't be discriminated against because they haven't managed to meet The One or they met someone they thought was The One (but one divorce later found they got that one wrong) or whatever the reason is for being single.
There should indeed be a legal offence of "discrimination against singles" and I honestly couldn't say how I rate the chances of ever getting a law like that on the statute book, considering that the State itself is discriminating against us (having to pay 75% of the household Council Tax bill, whereas people that are coupled-up only have to pay 50% each of the C.T. bill).0 -
JKS not sure where you are but we have a spare bed and if you can cope with cats Liverpool has interesting things to see.
Byatt I've promised the boy a trip to Italy the year after next as neither of us find hot beach holidays that interesting. He will be almost 12 by then and he's fairly easy going anyway. If you have any tips or ideas of places to go they would be appreciated.
I'm starting my OU degree in October at the grand age of 47. Better late than never huh? I had to pass an access course to be accepted for the degree and I moved house from a 5 storey Victorian house to a 3 bed ex council house the week my final assessment was due in. How I passed I'll never know as my mind was most definitely not on my studies!0 -

My employer is offering employees the flu jab this year - I don't know if I should take it or not. I'm asthmatic and got offered it by my GP last year but didn't take it.
MummyBobble Great saving on the insurance! Just remember to have the money put aside for the excess as you never know when you will need to call them out.
Hope everyone has a nice weekend.
I suddenly remembered your post about the flu jab, had rehearsed a reply in my head and then forgot to post! Anyway, I have a flu jab because of an underlying health issue, and the one year I didn't have it, I got flu...I'd forgotten how awful it is. I also have seasonal asthma...if you got flu, being asthmatic, then you would suffer a whole lot more. I don't get any side effects, the arm may be a bit sore for a few days, but don't rub it and it should be ok.0 -
I was at work when 9/11 happened. The tv was on, and I can remember everything and everyone being totally silent other than the tv.
It's one of those things that will always be stuck in my head, same as the news about Diana.
I have been MIA. Returned to work to find most people throwing up.....needless to say 2 days later I found myself off with the gastro bug too, so have been feeling pretty poo most of this week.
I think we now have 12 staff off with it...!!! I'm on hols week next week, so hopefully it will have gone by the time I go back.
Hope everyone is good, I see I have mountains to try and catch up on which I may get a chance to do tomorrow.
Have a lovely weekend folks.
Hope your feeling better, i know we like to share on here, but would you mind if I said a count me out of the tum bug!
The Diana night - the night she died I was coming home from a nightclub, then the day of the furneral, same nightclub and my then boyfriend - decided to propose right in the middle of the nightclub, he'd asked the DJ to clear the floor so he could do the deed I ended having to say yes, (thou we'd only been together 4 weeks), free bottle bubbly, next day I changed my mind....
I saw him a few yrs later, by then I'd changed jobs, had DD, he'd left the job as well, (we worked together at the time), and he was not out of the closet.. which explained a lot at the time.... and he thought I could have turned him! xxxx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0 -

Sometimes it's worthwhile making a phone call. Just rang Homeserve to cancel my plumbing and drainage insurance as the renewal came through at £186! By agreeing to a £50 excess the cost is now £63 for the year :j
hope you dont mind if I borrow that... as ours due for renewal in Dec xxxx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0 -

It might be worth asking your GP, and judging what mediciations your on, for me I'm asthmatic, on the standard blue and a steriod pink one, and usually steriods during the winter. I've had the flu jab every yr bar the one they added the swine flu as I felt I didnt want the swine part of it, I know this yr whether its being offered to everyone or age and conditions, that shingles vaccine is being added to it.
DD is asthmatic (Shes just asthma, - blue inhaleur), she has the flu jab die to being asthamatic xxxxx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0 -

As for people thinking that you are odd not having a partner...they are insecure without one, which is not your problem. All the best.[/QUOTE
Great advice there, I would also look if there registered under a scheme such as AA, or the other ones. I'd also write a letter to the local paper in the area, - even if it ends up on the letter page it will let someone else know the sruples of the owner.
We had an issue like that - yrs ago, I was about 17 at the time, we use to go to a caravan site for a week, but the week before we went was carnival week in the area, activites on the green and a big carnival on the fri ngt, what use to be go down on fri ngt ended up as 3 nights bed and breakfast, double rm for parents, single for me, - always booked early (Jan for Aug). This one time, the woman cancelled the booking (when we got down there after a 200 mile drive) as despite us paying for my room + 50% - twin for single person), she gave it to a couple and expected me to share, - one night I would have done but not for 3 ngts, we ended up contacting the tourist information centre - (as they had originally taken the booking for us), and they made her get alternative accomodation - which actually was better as it was a pub, better rooms, ensuite, and a beautiful view over the bay, - she had to pay the difference for the 3 ngts...
They were quick enough to take the booking - that annoys me. xxx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0 -
Mum2one - I'm doing a second year level statistics module. I was pleased to find that all the study material is there, there are no textbooks to buy. It's also helpful all the tips they give about organising your study. It's been 12 years since I finished an undergraduate degree so the studying muscles feel a bit rusty.
JKS I can only add to what's already been said about your b & b booking. Seems very odd to me if a booking can be cancelled if the place gets a better offer. Definitely go for the naming and shaming methods that have been suggested.
I was under the impression that it was illegal for a business to discriminate on the basis of marital status so that would include receiving no service or a worse service because you are single.
Re 9/11 and Diana, I do remember where I was at the time but it's not going to look great if a future historian asks me. For 9/11 I was still in bed (I was in Glasgow so it would have been gone noon - very lazy of me), and I only really twigged what was happening when I went up to the university to use the internet that afternoon. I still don't know why I didn't just turn on the tv. I heard a lot of people thought it was a disaster movie.
In the case of Diana, I had been at someone's 18th birthday the night before and woke up with my first hangover. It made hearing the news even more surreal. (I felt very old recently when a work colleague told me that at that time he was only 9.)0 -
Cranky - enjoy your new OU course. I completed a BSc a few years back and would like to do a BA but now that the course fees have gone up so much I can't afford it (and don't qualify for a student loan). I used to love the day the package of course materials arrived. I just wish they would reduce their fees again. They keep going on about how they are providing courses/resources for other countries, but I (somewhat grumpily!) wish they would use that funding to lower UK fees.
JKS - I'm another horrified about your B&B experience. I can't add anything to what everyone else has said but I do agree with them!0 -

Lol........well that was a close call......
What some people will do for a free bottle of fizz......lol.
Feeling better today thanks folks...off to do what I do best later with LB (eat).
JKS.....!!!....that is appalling!. How stupid of them to have admitted to that too...???....Duh. If they are that stupid i'm not sure i'd trust them cooking my breakfast.
I remember being in a BB a couple of years ago. When at breakfast they had pressed margarine into little dishes. Now due to hating margarine I can spot it a mile off, so I asked if I could have butter for my toast. The woman shoved the dish nearer to me, so I said that I was allergic to margarine and wanted butter.
She came back saying that butter wasn't normally served at breakfast and kept it for special occasions (?????). My reply was that it was a special occasion, I was staying away and eating out for breakfast and that she had better get me some real butter or I was going to make my stay there even more special and exciting........lol.
What is wrong with some people. Still JKS....thats one on the list to avoid from now on....their loss.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0
