Afternoon :hello:
Loving reading this thread and following your postsI can so empathize with the living on one income, unless you've done it I don't think other people "Get it" iykwim, even my sister doesn't..I'm another one who has just cancelled Sky..incredibly bad timing as the last day is Monday i.e. first day of the school hols!! Thinking of cancelling the TV license too but not sure about that yet...TV is about jiggered so if I could get something to play Neflix/iPlayer on that would be ideal really...
I see a lot of talk on here about cats..my daughter is wanting a kitten for her birthday in September and I think I have found a breeder where we can get one from. I'm hesitating over whether to get a boy or a girl and whether there really is a difference in temperament etc. I have had both girl and boy cats, but mainly girls. I felt the boy cat was more personable and playful but all the cats were lovely and adored...wondered if you peeps had any advice
Had a mild migraine all morning which leads me think your storms are on the way...very humid and damp but no sign yet.
Sorry for long post, must get off and cook a very late lunch/early supper. The joy of the first day of the hols...This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
For those that missed the storms - ur lucky - we're midlands based at one stage I counted 10 blasts of thunder the lightening was lightening up the room and the rain thought I was in India in the monsoon season - we're down to a light rain at the mo xx
It is easy to say isn't it when you aren't majorly affected by storms that you 'love' them, being on the coast I now get very harsh weather and that has been a learning curve for me.
Didn't mean to be flippant at all, I guess just used to living in different conditions.
Same as when folk down south don't 'get' the whole snow thing. But equally, I don't believe any wish any harm to the other.....just different experiences make for different opinions.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0 -
True Calico. I didn't know the meaning of the word "wind" until I moved here:eek: and I'm in a more favourable micro-climate here than some. I've heard of various incomers who, all unknowingly, moved to one of the less favourable microclimates here and then ended up moving again subsequently (ie bcause they couldn't stand the weather there).
I don't think I'd ever let the weather stop me going out in my life before I moved here. Since moving here, I have taken taxis several times (where I would normally walk) or, if I've decided to go out for a walk, changed my mind because of the weather. I just don't do that...so am somewhat puzzled/not too happy about having my behaviour changed at times by the weather...
I'm just used to putting on a jacket or raincoat or the like and heading out and probably not even bothering to button them up or put on a hat/gloves etc.0 -

I have both boys and girl cats, and all are loving and affectionate, though the youngest, 4 mths old Little Miss Millie-Mops, is quite biddable and wants to sit on my knee, whereas Young-Boy-Cat loves strong cuddles but won't sit on my knee, and Old-Boy-Cat would have spent his whole life sitting on my knee if I had let him. In other words, I don't think it matters, your cat will be an individual whatever its gender.
The only thing to maybe think about really, and this is just my opinion, and I guess a plea really, is whether to buy from a breeder rather than going to a cat rescue place. Where I got LMMM was over run with abandoned kittens. So sad, all gorgeous, all desperate for a good home, and good people working their socks off to try to keep them safe and cared for while waiting for a home. I'd go the refuge route every time, myself, rather than pay a breeder but of course, that's my opinion.
Whatever you do, I'm sure you'll have lots of fun, Every home should have a kitten imo :rotfl:

Hi Lavender Bees, thank you for your advice. Tbh I have had sleepless nights over getting this kitten and in the past we have gone down the route of getting rescue cats too. We have loved and cherished these cats (going back over a period of thirty years).
The cat is for my daughter, who has been through a rough time recently. Getting the right kitten for her i.e. one she can grow up with and can be a forever cat, is really important right now. I guess this is why I am going down this route.
We have a chosen a kitten that is suitable to being an indoor cat (having lost a cat to being run over in the past). Also I have looked at the nature of the cats to get one that will be "domestic", having had a rescue cat in the past that wouldn't be suitable with children i.e. she had been mistreated so much in the past she needed years of love before she would trust humans again for whatever reason
I have looked at our centres round here, but we are in a pretty rural area and thankfully don't have a big issue with unwanted cats. I've never seen any kittens being available on any time that I have looked. I guess any that do become available are re-homed really quickly..This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I do hope you're right rachelja re any kittens that do become available getting rehomed really quickly. I just wonder whether some people still do things like drowning "unplanned" kittens and do hope not and hope people have "moved on" from thinking that's acceptable behaviour.
I'd be keeping an eye on any pregnant nearby cats you spot, as to whether their subsequent kittens are going to be safely rehomed or whether you need to nip in quick and "put a bid in" to prevent this cruel outdated behaviour happening (and get a kitten for yourself in the process).0 -
All this talk of kittens is making me want one, but I doubt the cat-that-thinks-hes-mine would approve :rotfl:
And just in case you thought that all cats didn't like storms, well he was sat on my windowsill next to me for two mornings in a row, leaning out of the window & trying to catch the lightening (him not me, I was just watching). He's been known to play at puddle jumping sometimes when the rain is hammering down, just like a toddler. He even manages to look embarrassed when he's caught...
Not a lot happening here - I'm forcing myself to have a quiet w/e (no kids) & catching up on TV/reading, but its hardThe house is a tip, but as its the holidays & the kids are back tomorrow, even if I tidied all day it would be a tip again by Tuesday - they're just too quick at causing chaos :rotfl:. Mum2one - I'm aiming to get all the school stuff sorted tomorrow, you have inspired me.
LB - glad your girls are OK & you know what has caused the colour change!& as for some happy ending I'd rather stay single & thin

I'm sure that goes on, but also people think nothing of dumping 6 or 7 kittens on these refuges, and walking away! I had no idea how bad the situation had become for some of these refuges. I, too, expected to be told no kittens available, but the reality was so different. They were so desperate to rehome, that they snapped my hand off, reduced Millie-Mops from £70 to £40 (bless her, she was almost a bogof too!), and waved us on our way. Luckily for Millie-Mops, she has landed on her feet with me, and I guess the refuge took a chance that I am as trustworthy and knowledgeable about cats as I claimed to be, but it's worrying that they are willing to waive a home visit etc just to get a kittie out the door.
Get your blimmin cats neutered!! I say ..:o....sorry, it's a particular bugbear of mine how people can so badly treat these funny, loving animals.
Ok...and breathe!
:rotfl:
I understand that some breeds of cat have had certain characteristics bred into them, like being content to be housecats; no aggression etc, so I do understand their attraction in the situation given by earlier.
But I don't have words for the complete joy my little moggy Millie-Mops has brought me - I'm sitting now watching her romping around, and finally she has found a little cracked meow, and is using it to chunter away to herself while she plays :rotfl:. And in a few minutes, she will climb on my knee, tired out, purr loudly, smile into my eyes, and go to sleep.
Pure joy!

I'm with you on this one LB - makes me so mad when people say they can't afford to neuter their pets. I'd march them off the the bank then the vet with a gun to their heads if I could but maybe that's a tad harsh :rotfl:
I'm quite glad that I don't live near enough to the re-homing unit to call in today - I have kitten envy& as for some happy ending I'd rather stay single & thin

Share mine...Millie having a rare naughty moment, having climbed the curtain, she was perched on the curtain pole and couldn't get back down :rotfl:. A week or so later, she can climb the curtains, launch onto the top of the wardrobe, and get back down by flying from the wardrobe onto the bed...Progress!! :rotfl:
Photo to follow when I work out (again!) how to do it!0
