Not posted for a while but been lurking. Reading of those of you who are dealing with collapsing ceilings and replacing a much-needed car at short notice, amongst other things, very much puts any of my own worries into perspective.
I am now finally back in my own flat, moved yesterday. I didn't expect to stay at my parents' quite so long but it seemed wise to wait until the post-operation check to give me an update on what restrictions remain on me. My eye is recovering well and I was cleared to go back to work when the line from the doc ends in a couple of days so I figured it was time to go. Plus I could feel myself getting just a bit too comfortable! My parents helped me clear the place up a bit and frankly it made me rather embarrassed. I've resolved to adopt a new mindset concerning certain areas of my life and one of these simply has to be doing housework properly. I'm never going to make my home look like it's a show-home but it's no effort to do a bit each day, dusting, hoovering, etc. I also need to de-clutter some more, particularly the contents of my wardrobes. Getting a decent night's sleep is yet another thing I need to work on. Clearly the 4-5 hours I've been getting during the weeknights is insufficient.
moneyistooshorttomention - very much agree with you re grown-up kids getting bailed out by their parents. Once they're mid-20s they should be able to manage themselves, with the possible exception of one-off parental assistance with buying a first home or support in a time of illness.0 -
Oh my gosh everyone has been so busy! I, on the other hand, seem to have got nowhere. Haven't hoovered since last week because every time I go to do it Ninja cat and Princess cat are snuggled up together asleep on the sofa, and they look so cute I don't want to disturb them (or am I just making excuses so I can sit quietly with a book and a cup of tea?:D).
Hope all the lurgyfied are starting to feel better. I can just about breathe again :j
For some bizarre reason I've found myself wandering around singing Womble songs (if anyone remembers the Wombles?). Eventually, Wombling Merry Christmas lead into Good King Wenceslas (attempting to copy the rich baritone and rolling "R's" of the Welsh copper in Love Actually) and somehow finished on Truly Scrumptious from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Probably just as well I'm a singlie or someone may be ringing for the men in white coats to come and take me away... :rotfl:0 -

Nope.....all perfectly normal behaviour for a singlie....or a non-singlie really. I know this as I am the men I white coats.... Now had you done this in the middle of Aldi naked other than wearing a swimming cap....thats a different matter.
I have now been awake since 12.30 yesterday lunchtime.....so off to try and sleep, hopefully...!Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0 -
Hi Calicocat and I can see you are on line. Does that mean you didn't get much of that precious commodity aka sleep?:(
Sympathies on those neighbours doing noisy work btw just when you are trying to sleep.
Not in the same league as sleep deprivation thank goodness here...but I've been due to have some "work done" type stuff here today and no sign of:mad:. I was due to have a visit, at least, this afternoon from a workman (who has had some work from me and agreed with me, in conversation, about the level of unreliability by workmen in this area being One Big Nuisance) and ...what happens...? I just have this sinking feeling that this latest promise from him (ie that he will be here about something this afternoon) isn't going to happen. Have checked my phone and email and they are both working just fine...in other words he definitely COULD contact me if he knew he was going to let me down (again!!!!) but nope....
I do NOT understand this attitude that is so prevalent here in this respect. The only darn thing I can be sure of is I am going to carry right on making appointments and expecting them to be kept....and then keeping a weather eye open for The Opposition for any firm that lets me down, in the hopes I can find normal level reliability. Oh......<expletive deleted>
...and the reaction to my complaints about the HUGE level of unreliability of workmen here boils down to "They are laid back here". Yeh...but...a promise is a promise is a promise and we all have phones and emails these days if someone decides to be a Let Down Merchant. Is definitely voting with purse every time I can when I get yet another one....
Wonders if the same attitude prevails when it comes to keeping to "dates" arranged with girlfriends? Because, if so, I'd never have kept a boyfriend for more than a day or so if I'd been trying to "get a serious relationship together" here. As you were <sigh>.
EDIT: still no blimmin' sign of Mr Current Workman. Okays....it may be that he plans on coming round tomorrow instead (but hasn't deigned to tell me/apologise/explain). I shall be having a good long walk tomorrow and won't be here deliberately...but I wont bother to tell him. Gird loins and remember my Rule I had back when I was "dating" of "I wait 15 minutes beyond arranged time for them and, if they have neither turned up or rung up....I'm outa here...and will be gone, even if I didn't intend to be anyway".0 -
Hi MITSTM....i think my phone is always logged on so it looks like I am online all the time.
Did manage to get some sleep, work seems to have stopped, to be fair I think it's just the hubby doing DIY stuff, and I think once they clock i'm on my shifts they try to stop doing it.
RE:...workmen....
SO annoying!!....this is what I liked about 'kiss kiss sparky'....the fact that he got back to me straight away and turned up same day. Now this could be that he is new starting out and so not massively busy and had I happened upon him two years down the line he would have not bothered like the others.....mental note to self to ask how long he has been in business to suss this out.
Although to be fair the plumber did ring me back the same day albeit late at night (but he is very busy)..even if I had sorted it out myself.
This is where someone wins with me...keep in contact, don't bullshoite me about times etc...be honest about time scales etc. however this it seems is a rarity.
I would be very frustrated in your position, as I don't have massive patience when it comes to these things and always want something done yesterday......so I am in for a world of hate when I do get round to doing anything big. I think I will have to have someone as the project manager so I had only one person to deal with or I may self destruct.....lol.
Hope things go better for you tomorrow and things progress some.
On another note......anyone seen that advert (no clue what it's for) , where men turn up and remove your husband for you SAS style....made me giggle.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0 -
Evening peeps
Doing my best to unwind and let the stresses of the work day go.....
MITSTM - sorry to hear you are having frustrations with workmen. I'm afraid I don't have wise words to offer you - only some sympathy and an ear for any rants you want
Calicocat - I've not seen the ad you mention but it sounds great lol
Grousescot - glad to hear you are doing well and are now back at home.
Sorry if I have missed anything or anyone - not intentional...

I've had the OPPOSITE problem to MTSTM.
My builders have will have finished tomorrow (and done some extras) in three days what they thought might take a week.
My electricians turned up on time on MOnday to sort out the electrics in the kitchen so the builders could work, and did a couple of other small jobs while they were here. They have also given me numbers for a plumber and a bathroom guy they recommend, and actually gave my details to a mate who works for a window company - I got a call from the window company this morning.
I think, like CC's sparky, they've decided to look after me...0 -
The builder came - 0/10 for fanciability - reminded me of Shaun Ryder - the one from the group who went into I'm a Celeb......
Good news - it will be covered under the house ins (just have to pay them £250 excess).....
Good news - kitchen simples - new plasterboard, skim and they decorate top to bottom, (the kitchen needs doing, when the dog was a pup he took a dislike to the wallpaper and attacked every wall!
Fun bit - they've got to redo all the work done by the plumber to fix the leak, got to replace all the parts???
Also got to go via loft and check water piping as think the wetroom conversion may have been a bodge job...... not sure how much damage has been done, minimum extra extraction fan, - the one not big enough to do anything with, posibility the bathroom ceiling got to come down.......
Good suppose but... - There going to take care of the bathroom floor (damaged via plumber) but everything got to come out (toilet, washbasin) floor got to come up, and be dry before they can even begin...... Specialist job...... got to be contracted out
Interesting bit - we have to move out - but until they get the specialist team in and assess bathroom saga we won't know.......
We've contacted the people who arranged the wetroom, - charity grant, (7k) there not bothered in 1 little bit - yet we have a letter from original plumber who did the pipe work saying its been a slow leak from 2 to 3 yrs - its 3 yrs since wet room was done????
bar that we're ok!! xxxx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0 -

Coo!:T Well, if they fancy a holiday in Wales at any point....I've got enough space they could park up a holiday caravan or camper van.
...and I'm only half-joking. I need a builder for a large-ish job and a roofer at some point soon.
On the other hand, there are some distinct shortages of skilled people here in the first place. That surprised me. But if any osteopaths fancy moving here PLEASE DO and there will be quite a few of us that will lay on a welcome for you:beer:.
AGH! Mum to One re your latest house problems. I've heard that wet rooms can be a right nuisance if done by a bodger. Might even have to move out..yikes! Are you covered on insurance for any accommodation costs if you do have to move out? What are the total bathroom facilities you have in your house? Do you have both a bathroom and a wet room and are there any facilities on top of that (eg a loo at least)? Guessing that, with it having been a charity having paid for that wet room, that it's a health necessity to have a functional one for at least one of your household?0 -

Luckly we're covered under house insurance, so there take care of everything, its just the one all in one - they were going to convert the shed into an outside toilet but decided it was too much work!! If (when!) we have to move out the ins will rehouse us, but pain moving...
Not good news, we had a phone call 7.30am, this morning, my cousin, theyve moved my Uncle to another hospital (nearer us), he was getting better and moved to a old country style hospital, ready for rehabilitation, then 2 days ago he gets an infection in his arm and needed moving back to a big hospital, was due to come to one by us, but there wasn't a bed, got moved to the other big one about 15mile away, then this morning got moved to our hospital, - the infection has gone to his heart, they've put a DNR on him, they've given him days at the most.
Its really knocked dad for 6, as it all of us, xxx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0
