Morning all.
I had a lovely evening catchin up with some friends last night over a curry. Feel really relaxed today.
Mummy Bobble - I can sympathise as I have the lurgy still too. Planning on keeping warm and dosed up with meds to see if I can beat it.
Calicocat - hope you remember us if you winI just heard on the radio that the Euromillions winner was in the UK. I checked my ticket and I got £2.80 so no giving up work for me :rotfl:
I have just been sent the following saying and wanted to share it all with you:
Single isn't a status. It's a word that describes a person is who strong enough to live and enjoy life without depending on others
I really liked it :T
That's 2.80 more than me then....lol. I never win anything so no great surprise. Love the saying...and very Apt for us too I think.
I think i'm getting the lurgy here too...I hope not as I know of people who have been really ill and off work for weeks!!...but I do feel pretty crap and my throat hurts...a friend of mine lost her voice for a week.
No sleep here worth talking about...some kind of DIY project going on nextdoor involving lots of drilling....typical...i've been off 12 days and they start now.
I think the car buying stress is down to time and feeling rushed/panicky..also budget and knowing you are not being literally taken for a ride.....you will get there in the end. I love the fact your car blokey is 12!!!!......my friends son of this age would be doing the same, he seems to know loads about cars, and if he's here I get Top Gear head-overload.....sadly this is an area where a blokie does come in handy.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0 -
Thanks BW, I'm probably being too hard on myself
, I have calmed down a lot in the last couple of days, but I think this is the time when I feel being alone is like being an animal with an injury, they don't show it because to do so would mean being preyed on. So I'm charging around in my head thinking, I can't be ill or injured I have to keep going. It's only a week ago, but feels like forever... I think getting older does make you feel less "bouncy"...:o
Still, I have popped mince in the slow cooker after frying it off with a third of a bottle of red wine,, so will have a lovely meal later. The weather is just gorgeous...chilly but lots of sunshine. I might pop over to the farm shop (walking distance) in a minute and get myself a treat...or two
.

Sorry Calico, my garage blokey is not really 12, that's me getting older, you know how they say policemen get younger...well, everyone seems 12 to me! :rotfl:
He's not much older though...
I have zero interest in cars, now ask me to research what Ted Bunndy's can eat safely or not, and I can spend many happy an hour doing so.
Hope your lurgy doesn't develop, could it be the thought of work?0 -
Hello chums, I too am lurgified with a sore throat which is still developing. An early night and a long lie tomorrow should help, I hope.
Mummybobble, had to laugh re your son! Good that he has good observational and negotiating skills! :rotfl::rotfl:
Calicocat, I hope work goes as well as possible. Sparky sounds a really nice person. Must feel good getting the work done.
I 'only' worked my regular hours this week, but I'm still recovering from the extra the week before. Hence the sore throat: nature I think has a way of making us slow down. Luckily most of my prep for going to see my family in the Antipodes is done, all gifts bar one have been delivered here, and the stuff I'm taking out from the wider family turns out to be really quite small space-wise.
Thinking of cars, I hope your search for suitable wheels is successful Byatt. When I and my brother were learning to drive, we had an old banger, a really ancient Ford Popular, in a fetching dark blue colour. To my delight, I've found a die cast model in the exact colour online, for a very modest sum, in inverse proportion to the joy and laughs it will give my bro remembering some of his and my escapades all those years ago :T:T
To add to that are two cd's of music which my parents played a LOT on one of those huge 1960's radiograms the size of a sideboard, with built-in turntable: the original soundtrack for the film 'Oklahoma', and Harry Belafonte singing 'Day-O' and 'Jamaica Farewell' - which always made N cry, aged 6 or so!
Nostalgia rules OK!If you have a talent, use it in every which way possible. Don't hoard it. Don't dole it out like a miser. Spend it lavishly like a millionaire intent on going broke.

Hi, can I jump in and ask a question???
I imagine you may have covered this in the thread already but a quick scan didn't show, so will ask away.....
How do you singlies (?) (is that a word) cope with meal planning, cooking and eating for one?
I just find that I can't be bothered or that I buy loads and then end up not eating. I tend to resort to eating pasta and sauce and maybe breakfast and nothing else and am just fuelled by tea but know that this is having a negative effect on my health - I enjoy sports but am finding a decrease in my ability which I assume is realted to nutrition.
Also finding at the moment that I am lacking the 'umph', yesterday was a great example - spent the entire day on the sofa watching catch up tv.
Today however have decided that I need to take action so hence the question.
Hope just jumping in was ok?

Hello.....and welcome.
I batch cook loads of stuff and portion into freezer...A) it's cheaper, andmeans you have lots of different stuff to hand which is good for days you can't be bothered to cook or need a quick meal or want something to take to work.
A slow Cooker will be your best friend if you have some spare pennies to invest in one.
Oh and just for the record....spending some days just sprawled on the sofa is fine , one of the singlie special options we have, and is almost a religion amongst some of us....i guess it depends what age you are though, although had it dawned on me to do this at a young age i'm pretty sure I would have been really good at it.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0 -
I've advocated an element of batch cooking before now. Such as, recipes are usually for 4 people and, if possible, I make the lot and freeze a couple of portions. Soup is particularly good in that respect and I use Y*o V*lley large size (ie straight-sided) cartons and find they are fine for 2 decent-size portions worth.
It's a good idea to check out cookbooks specially for singlies. These often start from a viewpoint too of a singlie often (by definition) may be more inclined to think "It's not worth it just for me" and will tend to be pretty quick/easy to do.
A cookbook that isn't for singlies, but I am currently working my way through, is that recent addition to the "stable" of "A girl called jack". I do have to healthy-ise some of her recipes on the one hand. It's also as well to be aware that it's often necessary to have "something extra" with her main course dishes (eg some nice bread or a baked potato or something), as the portions are often not exactly generous;). But it's one that can serve as a basis to work from, adapting as required.
On a different food tack, thoughts please gals and guys. I have the chance of an allotment if I want one. Should I take it or no? Unlike my last area of the country, they are pretty freely available here.
My garden will take more than a little work to get it sorted out. Primarily, it will take thousands of £s I haven't got yet to do the "hard landscaping" it needs and its a windy site. All round it needs pampering and (loads of) money. So, as an interim measure at any rate, it might be a good idea for me to have this more sheltered site, that has already been used for foodgrowing and with a group of "friendly faces" working nearby (ie brains on site to pick and possible new friends).
Even if I decided ultimately to have both garden and allotment kept on, then obviously it would give me the chance to grow a better variety of stuff (I'd have room for bog-standard basics, as well as more expensive/unusual stuff).
I'm inclined to go for it. What do you all think?0 -
Morning All,
Looks like it's going to be another lovely day. :T
Amanda666 - welcomeAs Calicocat and MITSTM have already suggested - batch cooking and a slow cooker - are definitely the things I use most. I often make huge portions of things and then I freeze the rest so that I can have the convenience of a ready meal without the junk for those days I don't want to cook (and there are plenty of those). There is also no shame in having quick and easy meals such as beans/cheese on toast or soup/sandwich.
MITSTM - I think you should take up the offer of an allotment and go for it!
I need some motivation today....anyone got any going spare...? lol0 -
I'm using as my Motivation Tool for the day the fact that an official Tour of Inspection is going to happen soon by one of my houseproud new neighbours here:eek::rotfl:, as to how I'm doing so far with my house renovation project. She hasn't yet stepped foot inside my door since I moved here..what with all the dust and dirt flying everywhere and barely anywhere to sit (to extent that it's a frequent comment from "locals" expressing surprise that anyone is actually trying to live here whilst all this is going on:cool:...needs must...). A couple of people have caught a glimpse of the two "finished" rooms now and had an "OOH:lovethoug:T reaction to them, which is just as well considering how much they cost me to do :eek:_pale_:rotfl:
Better jump to it and get those bits that have been done so far up to scratch then hadn't I?:):rotfl:.0 -
Morning, All! :j
Hope all the lurgies are disappearing and you're all feeling well. It's a beautiful day here but Soooooooo windy. Blowin a hoolie , so I will do some outside stuff, but will mostly be inside. My wheelie bin is making a bid for freedom :rotfl:
I have to say that I NEVER EVER feel I'm not worth cooking for, but then I really enjoy food. In some ways, I wish I wasn't so attached to food. Like others, I prepare for those cba days with batch cooking. My freezer is up there as one of my best friends.
MTSTM - I would say go for it with the lottie, too. The worst that will happen is that you decide it's too much and you hand it back. The best that is more likely to happen is that you love it, and the company, and the fresh air, and you spend hours there.
Like me, yesterday...shovelling my lovely luscious pig manure, and now I can barely move, but I had a fab night's sleep :T (well, young boy cat woke me by stuffing his nose up my nostril at some point....that's when I realised I had a "whistly nose" and he was trying to track down the whistle :rotfl: Gawd, it's a good thing I sleep alone:rotfl:)
Yesterday, was one of those perfect singlie days when I just suited myself...garden centre (managed to get some more unusual herbs like mace for my porch windowsillsthat my joiner didn't think I wanted ). Ooh, yes, I also got the R1ver Cottage book about Hens, and some borage, and cat grass seeds...all things I'd been looking for last year, and unable to get hold of. So, a very successful trip :T
Then dug lottie beds and covered in my piggy manure all afternoon. Is it unusual to absolutely love the smell of rotted down manure?:rotfl:
oh, and I also got to cuddle a 7 week old puppy...what a joy! I love the gorgeous puppy smell. I nearly ran away with him
Then home for a hot bath and I fell into bed. Bliss!
So, today, I've been up early but my poor body is telling me to slow down, so I will do a bit of housework, check the oil/windscreen wash in the car, re-claim the plants that my neighbour has kindly allowed me to store outside his back door while my porch was being built, and I think that's probably it for today.
My porch painter has just texted to say he has my paint for my backdoor and can pop round now to paint my inner back door...better get dressed!! :rotfl:
BFN. Enjoy your day!
