Don't forget theaters and museums - many are happy to be left something ;)

Very true, from my point of view, any cause that is close to your heart is better than the government.

Sorry if that sounds morbid, for me I just wanted to take some of the stress away from family, if the worse happens, What really promoted me was 3 years ago I had my 1st anaphalxixs attack (I was a hairs breath away from dying had it not been for the quick action of a GP) and that prompted me to beinng orgainsed a bit more.

I don't see it as being morbid, I did when I was younger. Now I see it as just being organized and like you say taking at least some of the stress away from love ones.

My own godmother was single and childless, I was executor to her will and thought she herself had sorted much out including the funeral and even down to what she wanted on her headstone, I still found it difficult to deal with in the mist of grief at her loss as I was still fairly young. Thankfully she also had a good solicitor who helped me a lot. I think my own godchildren are too young at the moment for that responsibility so that's why I've currently made other arrangements. I want to lessen any burden on those I leave behind not add to it.

    Hi everyone
I've read through the thread and would like to join.
I am a singleton and quite happy. If someone were to come along it would be ok but wouldn't want to live with anyone 24/7. I'm getting too used to doing my own thing. :D
I have a lodger at the moment, she is very nice but out working quite a lot.
I'm with you LB and need to sort out all my paperwork as a big project this year. Loads of other stuff to do as well, in time:eek:
    Night night and sleep well.
  • Aa,ha, here you are….wondered where you had all sneaked off to.

Although I have done a will, my solicitor and I are the only ones at present who have a copy, and no doubt he will die before I do, but I’m counting on his much younger partner taking over.

There are a couple of things I am adamant to have in place
    1. Putting together an album of some kind – should I become somewhat demented in my dotage and packed off to a care home – my “reminiscence album” will then go with me.
    2. After dealing with things when my father died, is that I am going to have everything in order regarding my funeral written down, including the music to be played, etc, etc – already have the tunes selected. I may even go as far as taking out a pre-paid plan.

Regarding my will, I did think about bequeathing my house to a womans charity/safe house kind of thing but haven’t looked into all the legalities that might go with that. At the moment I see it as something that will have to be changed (maybe a few times) in the future, I still have to add in Power of Attorney for one – my brothers at the moment are executors/beneficiaries’ or their issue, but as only one of my brothers has children, to me that seems unfairly distributed and I may want to spread it around a bit, I also envisage outliving my brothers ;) …..so all change again.

Also my brother has sons – so no close female relative to carry on the family line – it may seem sentimental but I want my grandmothers, mothers and my jewellery to go to a female in the family line - not someone who married into it – so I am looking at the eldest granddaughter of a second cousin.

So much to do and think about………..but then part of me thinks, what the h*ll I’ll be dead, am I really going to care!!

Regarding wills. I've had a will for a few years now. Though over that time I have had to change executors a couple of times. Then again after I was seriously ill a couple of years ago.

I have a ring binder file and in there are:

Copy of will and name address of solicitor.
    Birth certificate
    Medical card.
Details of which utility firms I'm with and account numbers.
Bank account and savings account details. Who Im with etc.
Which GP I'm with, opticians and dentist.
    NHS pension details.
    Passport

Basically anything someone would need to know. I could just pick it up too if there is a fire. Thinking about has reminded me it might need updating.

Talking of beds. I used to do night shifts and Oh loved coming home to my bed. Often mostly in winter I come up early. I can read, go on internet, listen to radio and keep warm. I usually go to sleep early but am awake quite early in the morning.

I think there are lots of advantages to living alone. I'm too set in my ways now to have someone live with me.

I'm sure there was other stuff I wanted to say but it's gone.

From an acorn a great oak has grown and that's this thread.

    Morning Everyone!

What a great start to the new thread ; I thought my opening subject would kill it stone dead, but you all rose to the challenge.

I've added more tasks to my list, though.... The ring binder is a great idea, thanks, Boddy, but that's raised another issue in my mind, that no one has keys to my house, so along with copies of various documents, copies of keys need to be distributed, perhaps?

Today, I had a sneak preview of my weight (usually weigh in on a Saturday) as I felt I had lost some overnight. Isn't that a weird (but lovely) feeling?...and I have....now at -5lbs. Whoop whoop!! :T It just shows that when I just cut out the cr*p. and am more mindful of my diet in general, and am just a bit more active, I eat pretty healthily :A. Psychologically, I feel like I have lost a lot more than 5lbs.

Keeping it going is my problem so any tips on that...gratefully received...

Well, sitting here in my PJs isn't going to keep the furry purries in treats. Best get on...have a lovely day!!

    LB xx
  • Morning all.

Busy day ahead (I hate Tuesday:eek:). Full day in work and loads of running round with DD and DS after school (DS football, DD netball, DS tennis, DD tennis - not at the same time, that would be too easy - DS more football, overlapping with DD tennis) so all eating on the run and loads of sports kit to wash! Luckily I have a friend who is kind enough to bring DS home from last football training :D so by the time he's home at half eight I can be in my pj's with a glass of wine :j (note to self, must investigate the onesie malarkey, wonder if you can get one for someone vertically challenged but in shape - round is a shape isn't it? :rotfl:)

    Have a good day xx

Yes....you must find someone you would like/trust to have house keys. A) if you have an emergency and can't get back to feed animals, B) if you are needing help so someone can get in without smashing your front door in.

Having moved only one person has keys for here now (which brilliantly happens to be my best friend) but normally I had about 3 people with keys so I must think about who else should have a set locally. I don't know them well enough as yet (and may never do as she is very quiet)...but I would normally have become friends with people nextdoor and they would have keys. In the past this also began a brilliant scenario where if one went away, the other came in to feed and play with cats..(well not play with when it came to mine).
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.

Have you ever thought of one of those 'Keysafes' that is situated at the side of your Front Door?

They are very secure and can only be opened by using the correct 'Keycode' that YOU decide on - and can change whenever you want to. It does mean that you only need ONE SPARE KEY instead of a few people having one each. Added advantage of you being able to use it yourself in case you're ever locked out / lose your own keys.

This is the one that I have had fitted - you can have it placed somewhere a bit inconspicuous (ie behind your bins / around the rear of your property) if you feel uncomfortable with having it directly next to your front door.

I've got one of those too - family have the number, and I can change it to a temporary code for workmen etc if necessary (although when all the work is finished I'll be changing the locks again just in case). As you get older it is also useful if you need help at home - my DB had one fitted on his FILs flat when he needed carers, as it saved problems with passing keys on when he couldn't get down the stairs to open the door.
