  • I just wanted to post and say thank you. I am signed off sick from work and in amoment of desperation i came to mse as I have a mortgage and so many bills to pay on £68 a week. This board in particular has been amazing. I have spent many a night reading all the shopping and recipes on here and I realise now that what I used to spend in a week was completely ridiculous. I used to spend about £150 a month on food shopping just for me and then get at least 3 takeaways per week. At a conservative estimate I would say out of that £150 probably about £100 pounds worth was either things like pre packed sandwiches cos I was too lazy to cook or things that I bought that went out of date and just got thrown out. I am horrified. This months food shopping so far has cost £16 and I dont think I will need to buy much more. I have cupboards that are stuffed with pasta and rice etc that I have never bothered using in the past but now I'm determined I wont buy more food(fresh fruit and veg excepted) until I have used what I altready have. When I moved into my flat I never bought a freezer as I didnt see the point now I really wish I had cos then I could make batches of food.

Anyway sorry its so long but THANK YOU xxx :T
  • Hey

Sorry to hear about your difficulties. Its amazing how much we can save on groceries each week, especially on food that is not even needed. We've had to cut back alot and buy now what we only need. I always have a good supply of tinned food (beans, spaggetti, toms, kidney beans, sweetcorn, tuna, peas etc)just incase, also rice and pasta. So a meal can be made from these if needed. Everyone has there own ways.

Meal planning is the key and we spend about £30 a week on food. We eat very well and have daily meals like: HM Toad In Hole, HM Curry, HM Chilli, HM Shepards Pie, Full Roasts with HM yorkies and roasties, HM Lasagna, Sausage Casarole, Stew & Dumplings, Sausage & Mash, Egg & Chips, Something & Chips, Breaded Fish etc. All meals are served with potatoes and veg, or rice and pasta. Breakfast is either: toast, cereal & juice, egg on toast & juice or bacon sarnie & juice. Lunch is jacket spud, sarnie, cooked meal, something on toast etc.

    I love living like this.

  • Hi and welcome sparklewing :hello:

Sorry to hear you're off sick and hope you feel better soon, but I'm glad you've found your way here and making good use of the excellent advice available. This site has been a godsend to many of us, and in particular this board as it's quite unique from the rest and full of lovely people ready to give a helping hand, or even a shoulder to cry on when things get tough. I don't know where I'd be without it to be honest as I've gained so much support from everyone, through laughter as well as tears, and had a lot of fun trying out new recipes and ideas that people post here.

And a big thank YOU for your post :T

Penny Pincher - how do you do it!?!

I would love to live on £30 a week food shopping - making all those delicious HM meals.

Could you please give me some pointers!!

    Thanks

What you could do is take a look at the Cooking section of the MEGA Index. Listed in there is a challenge thread "Feed six for £1.62"...

..so plan a week's worth of meals out of your choice of all the recipes in there and see how it goes :)

Then there are lots of threads dealing with using up leftovers that even if they don't give you direct answers to whatever leftovers you have they should give you plenty of ideas to adapt.
