Plus, that only refers to terminations performed by the NHS. It is possible to have a private termination (I did) and in these instances, you do not need a GP referral. Mine isn't even on my medical notes.

It's the same conditions to have an abortion whether NHS or private.

  • Not when I had mine Torry, it wasn't, and mine was only last year. I didn't see my GP at all or any other doctor apart from the one who performed the termination.

The law which states under which conditions an abortion can be carried out are exactly the same whoever it's done by. Whether your GP is involved is not what I was talking about at all.

Interested in this comment - how is this the case? Aren't women's bodies designed to have babies? I thought that part of the abortion law about physical health was more about if the woman has a medical condition that would make carrying a child to term dangerous for her.

    It's also about mental health.

But physically, you are more likely to die in pregnancy than from an abortion amongst other things.

When you're pregnant the risks of all types of things increase, like blood clots for example. Probably a huge list that I don't really want to research whilst I'm pregnant :) but it's definitely more risky than having an abortion.

Your consent forms still would have to have been signed off by two doctors. Nowhere does it say that one of them has to be your GP, so two doctors who worked at the clinic will have signed the forms at some stage, even if it was only a nurse you saw when you went for your first consultation.

Women can die due to pregnancy related complications and/or labour, even where they don't have a pre-existing medical condition. Granted, it is less risky in developed countries such as the UK, but it's not a non-existent risk.

I'm pretty sure the law covers all abortions.

You might not have seen a second dr but another one probably just signed some paperwork I'd imagine to say they agreed after reading your notes or something.

The dr can be any dr it's not got anything to do with your gp.
  • Yes, but what I was trying to say, obviously not very clearly, is that in practice that did equate to being on demand. I literally had a consultation, paid and three days later had the procedure.

I don't doubt that two doctors will have signed the forms, but explaining that in practice it did equate to having the termination on demand.

And it's no different to that if you go through your GP. He/she signs the forms, refers your to the hospital/clinic (quite often Marie Stopes) where another doctor signs the forms, a few days later you're booked in. The only difference is that you don't have to pay.

  • :) Since I haven't ever gone through the NHS for this I will take your word for it!
