The Giving Up/ Cutting Down alcohol support thread - number 13

My beloved took me out for a meal and a film last night (Pride - excellent). It was also a friend's 65th birthday so he was also out celebrating with his girlfriend,
The couple were also there on the last night I drank, and it was the first time I'd seen them since. It was, therefore, the first opportunity I've had to apologise for any offence I might have caused. Turns out they were at least as drunk as I was and were a lot more interested in recounting tales of their own exploits, rather than waiting for me to deliver an overdue apology.
I'm coming to the conclusion that my appalling behaviour that night was pretty much all aimed towards one person - my beloved. Risking the central relationship in my life is a good enough reason to give up alcohol altogether but I wonder if in the past I've let myself off the hook when I should have taken it as a warning - because everyone else was as drunk as I was, too. Probably.
The friends were 100% okay with me stopping drinking altogether, and commented that neither of them drinks anything like the amount they used to. I hope it's as easy as that with the final couple who were there - this group of eight people have been socialising together for 20 years and booze has always been central to that. If I can keep mixing it with them with no problems that would be absolutely brilliant.Better is good enough.0 -

I always suspect that when people don't post that things aren't going well. I don't think it's negative, far better that you come on here for a friendly hug or kick up the ar*e and get back on track.:)PennySaving wrote: »There are 5 cans of lager that have been sitting in my fridge since 22/9 and I haven't though about opening one at all. Not so long ago they wouldn't have lasted 3 days!
Why not take them out? You're even less likely to drink warm beer and you could fill the space with lots of healthy food.;)Honey_Bear wrote: »My beloved took me out for a meal and a film last night (Pride - excellent).
I'm determined to see that HB. It's set in a village close to where my brother lives and where I grew up so I have an extra reason for wanting to see it. Well done for discussing not drinking with your friends. Another milestone reached.:)
Definitely AF here today.
4 AFDs please Shaggy.0 -
Hi Maman, not sure really why I haven't taken out the cans of lager from the fridge....maybe its a little test for myself. I know its really early days for me being AF but presently I have no desire for an alcoholic beverage.
Hi Honey Bear, you have echoed some of my thoughts in your most recent post. I definitely want to try and knock drinking on the head as I know its affected mine and my husbands relationship. He has an 'off' button that allows him to drink in moderation, but I don't. All summer we seemed to have argued every time I've had a drink and quite frankly I'm fed up with it and all the negative emotions that go along hand in hand. We have been married 16 years but I don't want the future to be in the same vein as the last year or so.
Anyway, enough of me being melancholy, positive thoughts all the way!!0 -
8/28 AFDs today0

Yea 8/31for me now thanks.
keep it up everyone. And yes, Chardonnay I know exactly what you mean about uncharted territory - i do not remember the last time i went 8 days without a drink - definitely not in the last 12 years as that's when i moved back home. Before that we would definitely have had a drink at LEAST once a week.
Each day will be a new experience and i'm still enjoying all the sleep - not the nipping to the loo very 5 mins though - what's with the bladder issues anyone?0 -
4/16 for tonight please.0

My sleep hasn't been great the last month or so and I suspect alcohol plays a bigger part than I tell myself. I know that my sleep was better generally (although I still had the odd bad week) since I started regularly clocking up 14 a month and being a bit easy on the weekend. Then redundancy, holiday, new contract and 3 months later I'm tired, skin looks awful, half a stone heavier and things need to change. One day, one bit at a time.
I've made my planned AF day today so that's a storming 2/14. I think the stuff about unchartered territory was interesting, I found myself feeling concerned about getting to 14 and then one of Shaggy's next posts pointed out there were 26 or 28 days up for grabs and in that moment the light was shone into one of my dark excuse corners and I saw it for what it was.
Forgive any incoherence, I am very tired and off to bed now. Sleep well everyone!0 -

Hope you slept well WBF. Don't be too hard on yourself, life gets in the way sometimes and as you say, we have to just take it one day at a time and be kind to ourselves. Something I'm not good at though, I have to say!
8/31 now please.0 -
1 more AFD for yesterday.
ShaggyxWhat do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.0
