Was a complete fool to the drink last night and can't clock up another AF day. I might give it a go tonight but I'm not holding out a great deal of hope at the mo, what with stress and now the World Cup too!
I have a friend who has given up the booze completely and is now rather sanctimonious about it, which has the effect of making me want to have a drink in a childish sort of get back at you way. Pathetic isn't it when you're this close to 50! Don't think I've ever grown up which is part of my problem. I began drinking at an early age when my dad left home and things fell apart. I went to a very rough school and got in with the wrong crowd. I think I'm still stamping my feet over it all and this is how it manifests itself. You'd think I'd have it sorted by now wouldn't you? I don't think there was quite the level of support in the 70s for teens with problems as there is now.
Anyway I'd just like to thank all of you for coming on this thread and telling your stories and sharing your lives. It's much appreciated.
Kind regards
Slowdown:)0 -

Im sorry I know I said my posts would not be chapters in books but I was so fired up with enthusiam by reading posts from yesterday/this morning that I have just let rip
Slowdown/Chardonnay - My hobby, I suppose, is fitness. All my kids are up and away so I have all the time in the world to pander to my hobby. I kidded myself last year, when I was training for the London mara that I was fit, but not this kinda of fit...but I do have to say and will always say it is you lot that have made the difference :j
maman/chardonnay - After reading the supportive posts from the other day and actually just clearing my mind of any worries that I am cheating myself - I am truly not craving any alcohol. I was out for dinner with my DD last night to a BYO and I brought Sorelle (white) and was more than happy to pay the £1.50 corkage. Not once did I feel I was cheated or craved the feeling of the rush of alcohol...I know it is not the cheapest but it so works for me. Obviously you cant get 0% wine when out in a pub so Im happy to drink Becks Blue or Erdinger
satchmo1 - Thank you for asking Im great and in a really good place. It will all work out in the end with the kids - I always said we needed a book after the 3rd stage of labour and toddler taming :rotfl:maybe this forum is it
Wanna Bee Free - Just go for it and if a Becks Blue means not waking up with a hangover and the associated crap that goes with it then clear your mind and enjoy. I also have recognised the 'waves of depression/confusion/self loathing' that drinking sessions can cause so I tell myself 'you caused this' and 'just ride them' they will pass and they do quicker if I dont dwell on the rubbish that I start thinking.
Chardonnay - Have a fantastic holiday and hey there's nothing wrong with throwing a few Becks Blue down your throat when you are away
To the rest of you - just wanna say a massive thankyou
Shaggy - please mark me down for 4/23
Have a great day everyone :grouphug:
It sounds like you're doing really well 5 Year Plan!Fitness has been a hobby of mine too the last few years. I started running last year after my mum passed away to do Race for Life in her memory and found a passion for it (I'd always loved it as a child too!) I love the way it makes me feel physically but also mentally too. I was really getting into it but unfortunately haven't been able to run for a few weeks due to a health problem as running seems to make it worse - so frustrating! I'm hoping to be able to continue when we get back from holiday though and we're signing up for the RFL again in early July. A lot of my family run too, including my 75 year old dad, who might well be doing the Birmingham Half Marathon again in October! :T
Have you found that drinking impacts your running ability? I know that I did and that was when I really started to look at my drinking. Previously, I would always have a drink on a Friday and Saturday night but once I started doing Parkrun on a Saturday morning, I had to stop the Friday night drinking as really felt it the next day otherwise. So running has had a positive impact on my alcohol consumption too!Well done on doing the London Marathon btw - that must be an amazing experience! I'd love to do it one day, not quite ready yet though.
Well done for sticking to the Sorelle on your meal out! It seems like you've really cracked this psychologically, which has got to be at least half the battle!
Thanks for the holiday wishes - you never know, I may even manage 1 AFD while away, but I won't be putting too much pressure on myself!0 -
Good morning all :hello:
Chardonnay/Slowdown - I can relate to both of you. The childhood and reasons for early drinking habits forming and yes it was the running that made me seek out a forum like this, I just couldnt continue running and drinking, but I needed a crutch (Sorelle/Becks Blue) as I cant do the whole cold turkey thingBit like dieting when all you can think of is food
Satchmo - Go you...who would be a parent. They don't show pictures of this beside lovely cuddly babies :rotfl:
Shaggy please mark me down for 5/23
Have a great day and weekend everyone :grouphug:This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Had an amazing day at the tennis in Birmingham yesterday. The weather was fantastic, so that helped but with our hospitality package that I won, we were thoroughly spoiled!
Consequently, my alcohol consumption went through the roof as the champagne was flowing and I couldn't resist having 4 glasses:o My friend and I then shared a jug of Pimms during the afternoon. Have to say I don't regret it though. It was a wonderful day and I actually feel fine today as stopped drinking at 5pm.
I know that I won't drink today so am calling in very early at 11/19 AFDs please Shaggy. Off on hols tomorrow so won't be on for a while and doubt there will be any more AFDs in that time!
Have a great week everyone and enjoy the sunshine! :j0 -
Chardonnay, your day sounded lovely. Have a great holiday.
I too avoid alcohol on Friday night now, as I do parkrun at Ormskirk on Saturday mornings. Years ago I could run after a drinking night, although I could feel the effects (mostly on my lung capacity). Now I can't cope with the effects but won't miss parkrun. What would you get if all you got was what you were thankful for?0 -
:T all of you people into fitness I do admire you.:)
Slowdown, I'd find your friend's sanctimonious attitude irritating too. What she does is her choice, not for her to force it on others.
What I disliked about my everyday drinking habits was the lack of control. I wouldn't put up with that in any other area of my life so decided that I wasn't going to let booze put me in a position where it was dictating to me. I still drink regularly but when I plan to. Of course I still have the odd s*d it day but not too often and even on drinking days I (mostly) know when to stop.
Hope I didn't make that sound easy. It's not, but that's just the way I approach it.
