Gaelen - I totally agree about feeling calmer/better when there is less "stuff" around.

I'm probably not going down the eBay route too much, as it just means, for me, another pile of stuff sitting around until I get time/inclination to ebay it. Better for my sense of well being for it just to be gone via freecycle or the charity shop.

Sorry to hear about your mum Gaelen. We lost my sister suddenly and unecpectedly last year, so I know that everything else becomes unimportant

One of the main reasons I want to declutter is that I have realised life is too short to worry about all this carp we accumulate, and I would hate anyone else to have to sort out our mess

I really am determined to do it this year and hopefully we will all keep each other motivated If we can also make some money, then that's even better :)

Dh found an online auction of multiple items that I would have bought last year, but I am thinking long and hard about whether to buy now. I might still buy some of it, but am being much more selective
You're only young once, but you can be immature forever :D

I don't have a very big house and 2 children so every little space needs to be used to its max.

  • Invited a little friend over for my son to play with for the end of the holiday. :)
It means I'll have a little time to finish the last piles in each room that I've "gone through" this week. Basically there's a little pile by the door of each room of "keep" stuff that needs to be taken to it's proper home.

Pile 1) My bedroom (and bed to change)
Pile 2) Kitchen (2 piles in here as 1 pile is "general" and 1 is Christmas decos to be sorted and stored in the garage)
Pile 3) Spare room that's been turned into the nursery this holiday

    Happy weekends everyone! x
  • Hi everyone, my decluttering commitment for 2014 is one item per day plus 100 small items in January.

I hope no one minds me reposting from the other thread but I want everything in one place :)
So my one item per day decluttering to date:
1: A skirt that I replaced in the sales (it was all bally)
2: A spotty dress that was unflattering
3: A navy polo neck that makes me feel sweaty :)

I also had a blast of clearing out on new years day and got rid of about 25 various small kitchen items. I'm hoping to have short blasts each weekend :)

    Good luck everyone!
Just to add to this, for yesterday and today

    4. and 5. Two sparkly skirts I bought in Primark.

They made my tum stick out and also deposited glitter everywhere. I still love looking at them but realistically I'll never wear them again. Not since I saw photos of me in the more flattering of the two. There is a theme here about photos lol maybe I should just take photos of myself in all my clothes and then see which I can bear to keep!

I'm also giving myself credit for another 20 small kitchen items, mostly out of date food but also an old elvis cup someone gave me and an insulated travel mug (I never carry tea when I travel and I have two of them lol!)

    Happy decluttering everyone!
  • Gaelen I'm so sorry about your Mum. I too find that the more ordered and tidy my surroundings, the calmer and more able to cope I feel.

I have my eye on a cupboard in the dresser for decluttering this afternoon - after I've dropped my son off at work ...
Enjoying the power and freedom of letting things go.

  • After my initial success of a car load of stuff to the tip, I have started a new bag of clothes which will be for the tip as they are faded and full of holes.
I've identified some good items for freecycle but my posts are still waiting approval 24 hours later - perhaps I need to sign up again.

    Well done all

Hi everyone, do you mind if I join? I will be a sporadic poster but will read along and post where I can.

OH and I are working long hours and struggling to stay on top of the housework so we are planning on getting a cleaner but they wouldn't actually be able to clean at the moment due to the amount of stuff.

It will be a gradual process for me and I need to start with not buying more stuff along with organising the stuff I do have better but I need to declutter as the state of the house is making me unhappy.

Just did an inventory of my toiletries and was amazed at how many I have - I keep buying them in Home Bargains and Wilkos without knowing if I actually need them. I have 15 shower gels!
  • Ooooo errr, where have I been posting my messages on this topic??!! I've done a couple of the past few days but they must have been on the other 2... oh well, I'm here now.

My challenge for January is to jettison 100 items which have built up while I wasn't looking - or so it seems. I've already posted somewhere about what I've got rid of but will start again on here. I'm up to 40 out of 100, and haven't done today's blitz yet, so I'll be back later with the progress.
Keep Calm and Carry On Kondoing

    Hello

I would like to come on board. I started to de-clutter last year after years of hoarding and holding onto things either because it had an attachment to somebody (used to belong to....things the children had done...things people had given me)or that the item, may come in handy one day or I may need this in the future thinking.

It was a really hard process to start with as it seemed so alien to throw/give anything away and I hate waste. Although I am now at the stage that it is getting easier and I am seeing results, I have just been able to decorate my lounge and it is now tidy and de-cluttered for the first time in years. I am starting to like the minimal look and feel a lot less stressed and tidying has become a lot easier.

Anyhow I would like to get all the other rooms done now as I want the feeling of peace and of being in control rather than the stuff controlling me.

I am starting with my bedroom and have managed to clear 10kg bag out yesterday which I will take to charity shop.
    De-clutter this year 10kg:j
