Oh help!!
This morning was time to cover the first sprouts on the Winston early pots. They are in potato bags in good compost on a patio.
I noticed this morning lots of teeny teeny flying things......they look dark in colour and are seriously small. The green sprouted leafy bit of the potato did not look chewed on any of them. I did not see any White eggs either on plant or compost....
Should I be worried? Do I have something nasty??Saving 1 animal wont change the world - but it will change the world for that 1 animal

My pea shoots look ready to eat - shame I don't have enough salady things to make up a bowl (scraping through to the end of the month).
Don't worry about the trees on that website - they will put out more offers next week. May is the end of tree planting season, so I think we can expect variations on this offer to keep cropping up before then - I've been mostly resisting their offers all year. The things I have had from them have been good but when they mess up your order, they really mess it up.My mission in life is not only to survive, but to thrive and to do so with some Passion, some Compassion, some Humour and some Style.NST SEP No 1 No Debt No mortgage0 -
Not sure about the flying things in your potatoes Suzeesue mine have been earth up in the bag once and I have just planted the other 2 bags up. My sugar snaps are now also under cloches and although my broadbeans are looking strong in the roottrainer they can stay there another week. Not sure if I want them in the ground or in pots on the patio like last year as they were really pretty.
Had our first BBQ last night got a bit too cold to eat outside so moved into the greenhouse. Everything just about fitted.SO glad I got it
POtted up some sweetpeas my friend gave me in two big pots with bamboo canes and string looks really nice on the deck didn't allow 30cm in between so hopefully they wont be too crowded.Arent they sweet

So my strawberry plants have started to flower which is rather exciting, however I have a feeling that they are moving to quickly and that I should be removing the flowers am I correct in my thinking????

Apologies for the extended absence. I haven't started anything yet, although I have eaten rhubarb.
Work on my kitchen went on longer than expected, but now it's sorted and I can get going. Didn't even have a windowsill to put a propagator on, so I'm way behind.
I've just bought some seed potatoes - pink fir apple and home guard for earlies. Couldn't find any of the picasso I like for my maincrop, but having read that they're a bit slug prone, I'm going to go for a slug-resistant variety this year instead. Recommendations would be appreciated please.
It seems so much milder than last year that I think I should be starting a few things. Is it time for parsnips yet?
I've got a hell of a lot of tidying up to do first though as the garden's a bit of a state. Think I need to try to get the Mantis going to turn the compost as there's loads of stuff waiting to go in. I'd be doing it now but it's raining.
Lost a few fence panels in the winds, and my greenhouse door fell out onto a nail and popped a hole in the plastic panel. Nothing I can't fix with a bit of gaffer tape but annoying.
Business as usual soon, hopefully.
To be fair, I did diddly squat for a fair few months because it was WINTER. When that happens, I stay indoors, where it is warm.
I had a big list of things to plant, plannings etc after experiences over the last 2 years.
However, I've done nothing, aside from plant some tomato seeds the weekend just gone.
There is good reason for this however...have had an offer accepted on a house, so will be moving in may (no chain...;) ) so pointless planting too much stuff.
New garden is mahoosive! Also has a pond which I think will be got rid of.
I'm planning enjoying 1 year in it, assessing where the sun falls on it (it faces south west) and then getting jiggy with it next year. I've already identified one mass of turf to dig up for a veg patch, but would like to re-use the turf elsewhere.
I also hope to get one of these:

CAFCGirl, Suzeesue, pretz, niftythrifty I'm sorry I haven't a clue! I came to gardening/growing very late and it's all trial and error. A lot of failures but very exciting when, occasionally, something succeeds
The rhubarb that keeled over and died seems to have a tiny green shoot coming up. No idea what's going on there but the other one is still growing so that's a bonus.
The potatoes got their second covering the day before yesterday and this morning five of the six tubs have green leaves showing again already.
The espalier Cox is at last budding (as is the white lilac which is inedible of course but smells delicious), and the strawberries which I thinned out a couple of weeks ago are growing well.
I plan to buy some trailing tomato plants to put in hanging baskets, just got to fix the baskets to the fence first. I love my tiny patch but seems whatever I plan there's always something else that needs to be done first!0 -
yes, these potatoes are something else! I too covered mine on Sunday and the little monkeys have poked even more above the surface!!
Also, overnight we have a new "pet"............he lives in a hole.................he makes piles on your lawn............yes! We have a mole LOL.
I am laughing so much at having a mole, especially as we have been given notice...I think its hilarious.Saving 1 animal wont change the world - but it will change the world for that 1 animal

Updates here from me:
1st lot of sweet peppers - still nothing - time to give up I think!
1st lot of chillies - nothing, given up on those!
Cucumber - nothing as yet
Broad beans - as above
lemon seed - was an experiment, nothing yet.
Curled cress - breaking through the soil and doing well I think.
Theyre the first thing to actually take.
My GYOP kit was put in, and has had its second layer of soil so we'll see what happens there.
Have just sown sweet pepper mix, jalapeno chilli, coriander and some yellow tomatoes (cant remember the name), chives and sweet basil.
Still to sow are tomato (minibel), spinach beet, lettuce mixed leaves, wild rocket and aubergine.
Need to start my aubergine soon but it says to keep between 20-25 degrees, my house isnt even that warm a lot of the time, and i dont have an electric propogator.
Any ideas on that one?Wealth is not measured by currency0 -
My sweet peppers arent doing anything either. never had a problem before.
Mind you I usually start in the airing cupboard and this time I have put on a sunny windowsill.
Maybe I need to have another go and put in airing cupboard.
None of my tomatoes survived. Is it too late to start again or shall I pick up some plants from car boot? HmmmmmmmmmMake £10 a Day Feb .....£75.... March... £65......April...£90.....May £20.....June £35.......July £600 -
I'm new here - a very interesting thread!
We are currently eating:
- last year's kale, just coming up into flower. I'll let some self-seed and collect some more seeds later.
- walking onions (like giant chives)
-hardy chards
I have a problem with the earlier good weather, now it's freezing again and no tomato/pepper/aubergine seed in the greenhouse has germinated...I might just buy plants and move on to cucumber/squash/courgette seeds next or I'll start again at least with the tomatoes, too late for peppers, etc.. How about swapping plants if you know people who own an allotment?First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, and then you win - Gandhi0
