Do you mind if I come and join you?

We were lucky enough to get an allotment just before Christmas so this will be our first year and know nothing!!

    I've been Money Tipped!
It's a lovely evening so I've been out in the garden to check on my plum tree which has lots of buds and few tiny leaves now, yay! Sadly it appears that a fox has dug up the bed that I put my onions sets and carrots in over the weekend :(

Any tips for keeping a fox away from veg patches? I haven't used any blood/fish/bone based fertiliser because I know they can smell it and think there's something tasty hidden away. Is there anything that will put them off?
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

    Hi,

I intend to join you properly from now, rather than half-a$$ing around! I have begun planting things, got a selection of herbs, tomatoes and strawberries in tiny pots in the shed in the hope that it will be good enough to allow them to grow. Literally no idea if what I've done is correct, but I guess we'll know in a few weeks. Was going to plant out some lettuce and spinach seeds, but there's rain due, lots and lots of rain, so I thought it was probably better to wait as they need to go straight outside.

Looking forward to exploring all this, this year, and getting my garden working for me!
  • The French beans I planted at the weekend are starting to show signs of movement and it finally looks like some of my parsnips have decided to grow :j

I just need to persuade everyone here that I DO need to take over the lawn for growing veg :rotfl:

We've just had a hail storm!

In other news, the long-awaited-build-a-garden-wall project may well kick off tonight. OH has got his brick-layer chum to come up and give us a price, and it means I can ask what I can do in the meantime, or if he'd rather me not plant anything.

Here's hoping I'll be able to get something done next week!

I've got the week off now so hopefully I'll get some time in the gardens :D

It's my birthday next week and I was given some garden centre vouchers in work today :j

I really really really want a palm tree :rotfl:

Between todays hail storms and sunshine, DH has allowed me to take over part of the lawn for veg and he dug it over for me, and potatoes have been planted today.
Spend less now, work less later.

I am so envious, my DH won't let me have any of the lawn......where have I gone wrong! :rotfl:

Well, it has been an absolutely beautiful day here today: warm, sunny and lovely. My plum tree is blossoming, my early pspuds have started to come through....and tonight it rained in Biblical proportions!!

I think I may find floating potato plants tomorrow

    Greetings all. :)

Apologies for the extended absence. I haven't started anything yet, although I have eaten rhubarb. :D

Work on my kitchen went on longer than expected, but now it's sorted and I can get going. Didn't even have a windowsill to put a propagator on, so I'm way behind.

I've just bought some seed potatoes - pink fir apple and home guard for earlies. Couldn't find any of the picasso I like for my maincrop, but having read that they're a bit slug prone, I'm going to go for a slug-resistant variety this year instead. Recommendations would be appreciated please.

It seems so much milder than last year that I think I should be starting a few things. Is it time for parsnips yet?

I've got a hell of a lot of tidying up to do first though as the garden's a bit of a state. Think I need to try to get the Mantis going to turn the compost as there's loads of stuff waiting to go in. I'd be doing it now but it's raining. :(

Lost a few fence panels in the winds, and my greenhouse door fell out onto a nail and popped a hole in the plastic panel. Nothing I can't fix with a bit of gaffer tape but annoying.

Business as usual soon, hopefully. :)
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
