Can I join in please
My FIL has an allotment but can't manage it now so I need to take over  very scarey as I haven't a clue!
Today I planted 6 potatoes that I'd chitted in a big wooden box of soil (earlies). FIL is still doing some of his own stuff like pots and beans etc. as well.
I also planted garlic in greenhouse, pots in potting shed and in outside salad bed to see what works best. I've also put watermelon and mixed melon in shed and greenhouse. Oh and fennel in shed.
I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing but hoping for the best! I have a good book but I'd forgotten to read it before I left (very helpful)
I've now got a note book and need to get organised. I feel SO excited planting my own veg/fruit, I just can't wait until it starts to grow (if it does!)0 -

Welcome to the mad world of gardening! It'll gradually take over your life and your house but it will be worth it, honest
What you've done so far sounds good, but I think you're too late with the garlic- I *think* you need to plant it before the winter sets in as it needs the frost and cold to break itself up into cloves. That was the logic I used when I planted mine in November
You might well still get garlic, but not as much or as big as it could be

Hello!
I'd like to join you all if I may.
Total newbie to veg/seed growing.
I planted 10 days ago some jalapeno chilli seeds and capsicum (peppers), nothing as yet. They are indoors (its cold outside here and wet as anything!).
Peppers are in peat pots (i think thats what theyre called) and the chilli seeds went in an egg carton.
I fear I may not get anything come through, there's zero signs of growth.
I have a glut of other seed packets here (bought at 2p a pack, say to plant by 2015?). Hoping someone might be able to advise:
Whats best seed to plant, now (late march) indoors out of:
Cucumber (Marketmore)
Onion - Spring (White Lisbon)
Runner bean (Scarlet Emperor)
Broccoli (Purple Sprouting early)
Pea (Kelvedon wonder)
Sweet Pepper (Californian Wonder)
All the packets says sow march-april.
Thanks in advanceWealth is not measured by currency0 -

I have my palm trees :j :j
Well, a cordyline australis and canary date palm, but that's good enough for me :j
They're both in the greenhouse overnight, but when I get them out tomorrow, I'll take pics and post themI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Health & Beauty, Greenfingered Moneysaving and How Much Have You Saved boards. queen of cheap don't do that
, I've just spent 10 minutes going through the site and 'spent' £38! Fortunately common sense prevailed - oh, how I loathe common sense - and remembered the mantra's just in time.
Taters are coming through in their tubs, it's almost time to give them another layer of soil.
Suddenly the rhubarb has keeled over and died back, maybe it's been too wet for too long?
