    Really?

None of this has anything to do with the ops stair carpet, has it?

You decide. The thread has gone open about buying carpet/carpet quality, who to buy from and who not to buy from. So, since this forum is all about saving money, a few comments on where it can't be saved don't go amiss IMHO

I happen to think that more than the OP will gain by picking up this topic later. If you don't agree then fine, but anything useful from you is welcome too.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

So it's ok if you allow a thread to creep but when others do it you're straight onto them. I'm with you now. ;)

I'm sorry you are short of something useful to say, I can't quite understand what you are trying to add to this thread.

(Now this is where you go away and find a topic where I berated someone for going off topic.) :A:A

  • I came across this thread while researching the prices National Retailers charge for their 'extras' .. as I work for an independant carpet retailer in the north of England.

The comment made that the national 'mentioned above' sells the same carpet as the independants is mostly untrue.

Most carpet manufacturers will not deal with the nationals now as they have had their fingers burnt too mant times with dictated terms and retailers going out of business time after time taking hundreds of thousands of pounds of stock with them.

Independants work from smaller premises and so do not have the overheads of the nationals, they deal with the better quality manufacturers and offer a more transparent experience that if something goes wrong it can be fixed quicker.

A lot of flooring is now sourced from China and is predominantly purchased by the nationals. The industry still buy a lot from Belgium but not as much from the UK as mentioned before there aren't the companies out there anymore.

Stair carpet can be a decent twist as long as the quality is in the yarn and its not too long and is tightly packed. e.g. 'tufts per square inch'.

Do not put anything higher than a 45-50oz on stairs and living rooms as the pile gets too tall and falls over as its walked on. If the shop cant tell you what the tuft per square inch is, WALK AWAY, as they wont be given this information as it is not what you would want to hear.

Try scratching between the fibres towards the backing on various carpets in the shop, some will be more difficult than others, go for the difficult ones.

A decent wool (80/20) carpet will cost in excess of £20 per square metre. YOU CAN NOT BUY A QUALITY ONE BELOW THAT PRICE. Do be careful with Axminster and Wilton carpets, although the weave is superior to most they can still be woven with a manmade yarn (polypropylene, nylon etc..) and as such will be poor quality and look awful after a few short months.

Carpet fitters for decades have been self employed, ours are and have worked for us for years. The customer pays them direct so we don't have to add VAT and a profit if it goes through the stores books. Its not illegal and keeps your fitting charge down.

Fitting charges should be in the region of £2-£2.50 per sqm, no charge for delivery, the fitter is calling anyway, no surcharge for stairs as we share the jobs out so all fitters do their fair share. An 11mm Foam Underlay should be no more than £4 per metre, £5 for top quality Duralay.

Sorry to go on but while the nationals keep their high margins we will embrace it. All we can suggest is get a sample and take it to an independent family firm and prepare for the shock and save between 10-25% on your order for similar or better.

BTW what are Carpetright charging for fitting at the moment ??

Easy question where do carpetright get their carpets from??

And when carpetright sells a carpet labelled Axminster and Wilton who is telling porkies.??

Ps I have no links with carpetright but I have tried to use a small independent and was shocked at the prices.

Some good advice from previous poster BUT a little anti carpetright ??

I'm going to backtrack a little, you bought a carpet that seems unsuitable for stairs?, they get very specific areas of wear.., but in this case as flak chap says, it is simply pressure marking.

If you have an exchange then you have done well, but just remember, the stairs is just about the worst place to put a carpet to the test.
