I've had top quality 80/20 genuine Wilton that looked foul after a year on the open stairs even thought the rest of the downstairs was still great years later.

I now have a cheap wool berber on the stairs, the only carpet we have in the house, it is wearing better but I'm guessing about 6 years will be it.

We haven't touched on the reason for such poor quality, and it's fashion.
Most sub 40's don't care how well it will wear, fashion changes or they move house and it's all swap.

I would say beware single colour 80/20 wool carpets, they are always a blend of colours and often when flattened change hue. ;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

?? big sign in the window normally gives me a clue, or the Large price on the carpet sample.
Maybe they've improved in the last few years, but the large price on the carpet sample used to look very good till you found that fitting, underlay, grips, rods, tacks, everything had to be added on, practically doubling the price. In my small local store, they display inclusive prices.

I'm not the only one saying the local independent is cheaper and better.
they have met one duff salesman and the whole chain has been tarnished.
Crikey, he must get around a lot!

Whats the difference? One charges £10/m for the carpet, plus £10/m for fitting. The other prices it fitted at £20/m

I have yet to find an independent, who is cheaper than carpetright upfront. Most independents will price match or even go slightly lower to win the job, but only once you give them the carpetright price.

My local independent is the same as carpetright, you pay the fitter directly and it costs £40 per room. The only difference is, the independent advised me to go online and buy my own underlay/grippers and their fitter would put them down, in the price. Carpetright will only lay on existing underlay. if you want them to fit new stuff, you have to buy it from them

a fitter makes up his money selling gripper rods and door bars so when a customer asks him to lay the u/lay he bought online for free most would tell them '' sure, and i'll cut your grass afterwards''. you wouldn't go to a mechanic to give your car a service and ask him to fit new break pads you bought online for free

That's just what carpets do. You stand on them, they get flattened. Can't you hover?

Most people would rather climb the stairs normally.;)

The difference is that one has a (big, flashy) price tag that says "£10 sq m" (probably including the words 'Sale, prev £15'), the other has a price tag that says "£20 sq m".

But they both end up costing you the same. I don't like firms that play that kind of game.

    Well, I got it, :T:T:T

Back on topic, buying carpet is no different to buying any other product, although there are several ways of getting the final price. You simply have to work the market place then go with the best deal for you, some outfits will move the furniture around if you are having several rooms done and some simply won't.

The only thing that crops up on here a lot is the question of whether money can be saved by sourcing the carpet, the underlay the fittings etc, and then either fitting it yourself/employing a fitter.

The answer is invariably the same, the saving if there is any isn't likely to make the effort worthwhile, and the risk of screwing up the cutting is best left to the fitter.

But the independent just doesnt advertise his 'sale' price. If he could sell it for less than £20/m in the first place, and undercut carpetright on every deal, then why not do so? Is he not basing his market on unsuspecting fools too, just by a different tactic?

    Really?

None of this has anything to do with the ops stair carpet, has it?

I agree, i would never try fitting a carpet myself (just laying offcuts in a cupboard was a nightmare lol). However big savings can be made buying your own underlay/grippers online. I paid just under £3/m for a thicker underlay than carpetright wanted £9/m for. Which for an average sized room, equates to a enough of saving to cover the fitters fee and then some.
