New stairs carpet wearing after a week?!

  • Too late now but you really do need a better carpet for a heavy wear area like the stairs. Good underlay won't make a lot of difference if the carpet isn't up to the job.

I notice it's 100% synthetic, that probably explains why it's flattening and doesn't recover.

Aren't carpets labelled as to their suitability for different areas of the house? On the back of the sample square as I recall. Yours seems like a carpet for bedrooms

Well the have agreed to replace it free of charge. I have ordered another carpet which is more expensive and no extra charge.

They said that carpet is not for stairs (even though their website says it is and also the sales person said it is ok for stairs).

How do you know what the op has chosen as a replacement?

If they haven't picked a Wilton they'll probably have the same problem. :o

The carpet is Firth's. I know that they obviously do a range of qualities but this does surprise me as our first ever carpet was this brand and lasted for about 15 years. (Still a good colour but very worn by then and it was wool-£5 a square yard, 40 years ago, which was relatively expensive then, but not comparatively as expensive as wool carpets today).

It's a short, looped pile. You'll certainly have less of a problem with that. :)

All the comments about not using CarpetRight don't help, and besides the carpets they sell are from the same places that the independent shops buy from so if the same carpet had been bought from an independent it would have made no difference.

True, Carpetright sell carpets in the same way as Tesco sell Heinze beans.
'Oh. we shop in a nice little independent shop'....... but you still get the same carpet. As for fitting , Carpetright don't even have thier own fitters, all are independent, thats why you always pay them on the day .

Buy a cheap carpet, wether from Carpetright or an independent , it still will be a cheap carpet .......... but because of high turn over ( like Tesco ) your 'beans' might still be cheaper.

Buy an expensive Wilton/ Axminster it will be the same carpet from Carpetright or your local independent.
But if you want to be deluded, buy from your little shop, will be more room at CarpetRight when I want to buy.

Ps A very happy carpetright customer.

Yes, you'd have less trouble with the pile on stairs with a berber, or looped pile.

It doesn't work like Tesco, tho you'd think it should do. I found my 'beans' cheaper at the local shop, and had better service too. Plus they were more transparent about the price from the beginning.

?? big sign in the window normally gives me a clue, or the Large price on the carpet sample. As for service ?? what was so different?

They show you samples, answer your questions. provide an estimate.
The service is down to the individual person you are dealing with, you can have good service with an Independent or a chain, you can also have terrible service from both.

My gripe with the posters in this thread, who have made the blanket statement ...... avoid Carpetright, they have met one duff salesman and the whole chain has been tarnished.
