Hi all, please may I join this thread? Little Charlie arrived 10 days ago at 36+3, just about getting over the shock of early arrival and slowly learning how to look after a new born!!

My newborn sleeps all day and feeds very often during the night. We have had 4 nights at home with a combined sleep of about 8 hours between me and DH. (Had a stay in hospital) DH is finding the lack of sleep very hard and I am feeling like I am looking after him and Charlie which is making me even more tired!

The midwife and HV during the safe sleep assessment (they both do it where I live) said that they shouldn't be asleep in a room alone as they need to be able to hear someone else breathing but your comment has made me realise that they didn't say what age until! Is it til six months like how long they're meant to be in with you for?

Just lurking and saw this. Our nct teacher said yes thats what it means - most people think it means at night but it means all the time. Hence why moses baskets are handy as they can be taken downstairs. Or a carrycot from a travel system. I didnt realise this until she said.

I know what you mean, and they grow so fast! :o When my LO was a few days old, Mothercare got my online order wrong, and instead of sleepsuits size 0-3 months I received a two-pack of tights size 3-4 years (I've no idea why!). I called them to complain, and refused to go to the post office to return the tights (I'd just had a c section and could barely move!), so they let me keep them and sent me the sleepsuits I'd ordered. At the time I couldn't imagine my LO ever being big enough for those tights - they looked huuuuuge next to my tiny little girl. They now fit her perfectly :o

I don't miss newborn-ness one bit though; it's so much fun being with her at the moment. Tonight in the bath, she cleaned her rubber duck with her sponge, then brushed its 'hair' (the top of its head), wrapped a flannel around its neck and said 'scarf!', then folded the flannel into a lump, put it on the duck's head and said 'hat!' :D

This is a magical age :D

  • Tl, yes the recommended time is 6mths, we moved ds into his room last weekend and he is 7mths. I think it all depends on preference or space, we had the space so he stayed with us.

Welcome and congrats mrsbunny! The lack of sleep is exhausting when they are newbie s but you will get used to it.lol I miss the teeny tiny stage, I get broody when I see tiny babies!

Aww nutella how cute! My dh said tonight he cant wait for ds to talk. Oh I had looked up the red cross course last night as there is one quite local and its the cheapest in the area.

re grobags, I put ds in his in a long vest and pj top, as that is recommended for the room temp, 18-19 according to the free thermometer thingy.. He seems snug enough . My ds is a very warm bubs though. Night all x

  • Morning ladies,

Welcome to the new ladies and congrats.

I don't need to worry about warmth and sleeping, with lo helmet he gets hot easily so we have him in a long sleeve vest and a 2.5 gro bag. If you want to keep your lo warm.... Get a helmet :p

Lo is still in with us.... Literally..... In our bed night after night. I feel really bad but I'm shattered every day, getting up to work at 6 then coming and looking after lo all day plus housework that by bed time the thought of having disturbed sleep makes me want to cry so I tell oh to leave lo in our bed. I'm going with the fact that we can sort it when he's older hahaha how naive!

Been looking on the annabel karmel website for ideas for the lo, she's said porridge to mix with fruit but I'm not really sure what to buy... Baby plain porridge? Or is there a brand that is safe but for adults? Also natural yoghurt.... Again not sure on what brands. I'm worried over the sugar/salt content in things because I'm not sure what I should be looking at to know if it's ok for the baby. I feel so out of my depth this time!

  • Mrs H I was surprised that baby porridge isn't made from oats, it's rice and corn (this makes it gluten free). If your LO is over 6 months and doesn't have gluten issues then adult porridge is fine.

Why won't my toddler sleep? Wahhhhhh! It's like having a newborn again *sigh* He's been a brilliant sleeper from around 6 months, but this is horrific, he's not even crying, he's shouting, all night long. He will start by shouting 'MUMMMMMMY' and when I go in he just screams in my face, it's really not pleasant. Or I hear him kick, kick, kicking the ends of his bed, it's so loud it actually sounds like he's going to boot it right off. He will ask for things repeatedly too, which is almost like a delaying tactic because some things he's asking for he has in his hand.

He doesn't nap in the day anymore, so it's definitely not that, it's like he's bored and just wants up to play, but it's 1am, 1.30am, 2.am, 2.20am, you get the picture, so definitely NOT time to play. I am so calm to begin with but when it's wake up number 7, I do find myself getting ratty with him, when I don't want to. He absolutely won't settle in with us, so that's not even an option, my God I wish it was.

Welcome to all the newbies xxx

MrsH I would buy normal porridge oats, in a bag or box from the supermarket, own brand is absolutely fine, after 6 months, baby porridge is a complete waste of money. A normal bag of porridge will be around 75p or so, and will do your LO probably hundreds of portions. Porridge oats shouldn't contain any salt at all.

Below 12 months it's recommended for less than 1g of salt a day which is equivalent to 0.4g sodium. From what I remember low salt for babies if looking at the packet is less than 0.1g of salt per 100g of food, if that helps at all.

Try not to worry too much about it, if your LO has a day where they've eaten saltier food than usual, just cut back the next day, look at it over a week, rather than every meal.

If you cook with natural ingredients, don't use ready made sauces etc, there really isn't much to think about, as the salt content will be down to you then.

All food after 6 months is suitable for a baby, with the exception of whole nuts and honey. Everything else is fair game, even a big lump of steak or chop :D

I'd use normal porridge oats - supermarket own brand is absolutely fine and very cheap! Oats are just oats, so will never have sugar or salt added. I cook oats with full fat milk and a handful of blueberries (they'll go soft and start to disintegrate, so no big lumps - in fact you'll end up with blue porridge!), grated apple or pear... things like that. I have an impatient LO, so I normally make it a bit thicker than it should be and then add a bit of cold milk or natural yoghurt just before serving to cool it down quicker.

This was my LO's favourite porridge when she was your LO's age :)

For breakfast, you could also try Weetabix if you haven't already - the plain adult ones (i.e. not the flavoured ones) are very low in sugar and salt and very popular at my LO's nursery. I use a bit of hot, boiled water from the kettle to soften them, then mix in cold milk (small amounts at a time to avoid lumps) until it's nice and smooth. Rich in fibre, so might help your LO's constipation too :o

Natural yoghurt - I buy organic (usually Yeo Valley or Sainsbury's own brand), but any supermarket own brand natural yoghurt will do - they don't have any added sugar. For flavoured yoghurt, Rachel's Organic 'my first yoghurts' and Plum's fromage frais are both sugar free - my LO loves them. They can be a bit tricky to find, but I get mine from larger Sainsbury's stores (in the 'children's yoghurts' section).

Hope this helps, but very happy to answer more questions x

Oh no, that sounds like really hard work :( I don't have any suggestions I'm afraid, but as with everything it's hopefully a phase that will end soon. Hope you get some sleep soon x
  • Interesting about the porridge, I had no idea the adult stuff was fine. I had bought the banana baby one but ds has turned his nose up at it today, not surprised. Its a grey colour! He loves mashed banana though so will get a bag of oats. We buy frozen blueberries and blitz them, boiled first, and I put them in the other day, he loves them.

Taking ds to dr this morning, I think he has eczema or something starting . Has a horrible dry rash on his tum and its spreading. The dr gave him oilatum but it has made it worse :(
