I saved up 8k 4 years ago, rented my house out, got a sabbatical from work but ultimately handed my notice in, set off travelling but realised very quickly that what makes life interesting is purpose. Places and people are just places and people.
What was the purpose of you giving up your job etc? Did you not have this thought through before you went? How long did you go for?.....and now where are you? Tell us a bit more about yourself..? Was the debt accrued while traveling?
I find that the people and places make the purpose worthwhile!“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent".0 -
Kat, I've not been on for ages so excuse for not having read every post on this thread
sounds like it's all very exciting! I never got the urge to travel myself but am always fascinated hearing peoples stories of travelling. Sorry if I have missed something but will you be writing a blog?

Hello Mrs GSR - yes I will be forging a blog somehow but I am stumped at what it should be called - any ideas?“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent".0

The wandering kat?
Oh god what is that? The diary. (Inspired by Australia and how everything wants to kill you)

Haha Peaty - the second one is amusing!
A lot of blogs at the moment use the word "wandering" or "nomad/nomadic" and I need to steer clear of those.
There was a suggestion of "The Tenacious Kat" but I am not sure how that would fit into a travel blog - maybe my insatiable ruthless nature in getting on the road but there was another of "Leaving Only Pawprints" which is slightly "weird cat lady"...
So we are still thinking...“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent".0 -

Hello everybody - can you believe it's 3 working days to go - Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week - although I say "working" in the loosest possible terms! :rotfl:
So I had "the delivery" yesterday. And by that I mean the main rucksack. Albeit it took me an age to get the parcels off the gobby mare that lives next door and talks absolute utter gob-sh*te......but I am every so grateful she took them in as it would have been quite difficult getting them back from the post office.
My rucksack is everything I could want it to be! I was very pleased. It is clearly very sturdy, not as massive as I thought it would be
HOWEVER a few items are going back. My lovely Swiss army knife it going back as it had a scratch on it and I want it purr-fect.
The £28 all-singing-all-dancing wash-bag is going back as it's not as amazing as I thought. It was going to hold everything, was super strong, able to "hang" from a wee hook etc....However it's not worth the money. It shall be replaced by a small floral wash bag for £7 from TKMaxx to hold my "medications and make-up" and I will get a smaller hanging wash bag to hold the bits that go to the shower with me.
So I have got all manner of weird things like duct tape, silk sleeping bag liners, go-toobs for my toiletries, travel plug, case for my soon to be replaced pen-knife, head torch, emergency whistle, spare SD card, spare earphones, travel pillow with ear plugs, medical kit with syringes etc......................
The actual medications and toiletries will be the fun thing that I can do in Belfast although I need to get Dr Bronners Liquid Castille Soap while I am here - google it people. It does everything!!!
I will be back later - I gotta run to the post office. Off to see my friend and her kiddies tonight at the local camp site. Close to home and amuses the little people - most of my church friends will be out tonight so we will have a camp fire I think and a sing song in front of the flames. Super Cool..“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent".0 -
Drive by squeals!!!! I'm sure your blog name is somewhere in that giant list of thingummies there. 'Kat & her rucksack' or the like.
I have heard of the castille soap! You really have thought of absolutely everything haven't you. Have you got safety pins? xx

Congrats - not far to go now!
When are you setting up your site/blog so we can all keep up to date with your exploits?
I've decided to take most of November off for a short 3 week trip, to see how that goes first and then I will plan something longer next year. Hit the big 3-0 late December, and I would kind of like to spend that around friends/family first as thats what is important to me. Hopefully pick up some sort of annual bonus in feb to help that out.
In november I'm currently thinking of a 1 week detox in a runners training camp in the Algarve, and then somehow making my way to Alexandria as I have always wanted to visit the great library and the lighthouse. Not quite sure how to connect the dots at present - the cheapest connecting flights appear to connect through Istanbul.0 -

I would love to have a three week break somewhere. Where are you going?
So organised Kat, I can't go anywhere without forgetting something (usually PJs). I'm sorry the washing bag wasn't as good as you wanted.0
