I have that god awful metallic taste in my mouth again today. It doesn't matter how much I brush my teeth/floss or even brush my tongue. Just doesn't helpHELLO LADIES! 10 weeks in and i found myself last night worrying about what i was going to do once the LO arrives because its my first child and i have NO idea whatsoever what to do. i know NOTHING about babies, how to wash them, what to do if they're poorly, when to feed them (apart from when they cry but it could be something else couldnt it?) i will have the support of my mum but im scared that she might have forgotten herself!
where do other new mums get help from? and also any advice from everyone will be really appreciated!
However, trust me. When you've had the baby, your natural instincts will kick in, and I promise you that your own mum won't have forgotten - and nor will any of the other females you know. Babies cry for a few reasons and you might need to run through a few of them at the beginning but as long as you keep them clean, fed and loved then there's not much more to it. And when you get to know them and their little personality, then it will get so much easier.
I plan to ignore most of the things that the health visitors tell me - unless they feel right for my baby. I say this as any health visitors I've met have never had any children themselves! Having said this, I also plan to ignore anything that anyone else tells me that I must do - again, unless it feels right for our baby. It is SO easy to think that you need to take on every piece of well meaning advice, but although there will always be helpful bits here and there... You and daddy are the ones who know the baby best. So don't let yourself be overwhelmed and feel bad if something someone suggests doesn't work.0 -
thank you both sweetbabu and april87
Sweetbabu - we haven't told many people yet but i am anticipating the baby advice, especially from the older lady i work with as she offers advice on everything and anything! i am hoping that my instincts kick in as i have never been baby friendly or known what to do with them, yes i am that bad!
btw - nandos wild herb sauce is working so well for me right now to get rid of nausea and weird tastes. very strange!
april87- i will ask my friend who is a midwife (and pregnant as well) what books she would recommend, that is such a good idea thank you!Don't sweat the small stuff0 -
Wow, congratulations Elles - twins!! You're going to think we're all over here taking it easy...
Hi SusieQ, congrats to you too! I think we're in a similar boat - I don't think I'm naturally maternal/broody at all and I've never changed a nappy! However I'm very zen at the moment (which is surprising but good) and not going to worry about anything until after my scan. Assuming all ok, I imagine it's going to feel pretty real after that!
Sweetbabu, I think that's really sound advice. I feel like as soon as we tell people they'll all have an opinion on what we should and shouldn't be doing - and I know we'll be super grateful for a lot of it, but I think there might be a fair bit of smiling through gritted teeth too

About a year ago (early preparation!) I read a book called pregnancy for modern girls by Hollie Smith, which was quite an enlightening (and occasionally TMI) sort of read. In fact maybe I should read it again now...!
I am another person who is appalling awful with everyone else's bbies, but then so is my Mum, as she has always reassured me that it's different when it's your own. I choose to trust her, as I turned out OK
Congratulations Elles - twins is very efficientA friend at work had natural twins this spring - hard work I think, but worth it
I'm still slightly disturbed by the lack of morning sickness, but have been reading up on it, and apparently it's not that uncommon. So I'm just going to go with the flow and be grateful that my body seems to be taking all this epic change in it's stride! Apologies to those of you who are struggling with it...0 -
Firebird don't worry - I have had the most symptom free pregnancy ever!! Super mild nausea for a few days that was settled by eating and otherwise literally nothing. No sickness, tiredness or anything. I do feel very lucky but it caused a LOT of anxiety worrying something wasn't happening right.
At over 21 weeks I still barely have a bump and have gained like 2lb max.... Think it's just how my body copes!Officially Mrs B as of March 2013
TTC since Apr 2015, baby B born March 20170 -
Cats2012 your post has made me feel sooooo much better because I have had no symptoms at all apart from mild nausea which goes after a taste of nandos sauce or fruit juice and I've been worrying myself silly I couldn't wait til my scan in a fortnight but *phew* I feel better that maybe everything is fine.
Will definitely look into pregnancy for modern girls and HOPE it is different with my LO.Don't sweat the small stuff0 -
susie- try not to worry. I'm sure that we all have our wobbles and doubts about our abilities. But it's not about being perfect, it's about doing our best and 'good enough'. I'm sure that we will all have moments where we think we are failing, but we won't. The fact you are even worried shows how much you want to do your best! Plus, be gentle on yourself, those pesky hormones can cause havoc! The best thing you can do right now is look after yourself, and try not to panic. Even though this is the scariest thing we've ever done! And it lasts forever! But you'll learn how to wing it, and if you do struggle there is so much support out there, and then you'll get the hang of it. I'm sure we'll all f up some days, but it's a learning curve and I guess it's one of the reasons for this thread. And the reason parents buy wine.0

Yey susieq I'm glad I helped! It is tough and I was so nervous I had an early scan but I really don't think there's any correlation with problems as I've heard stories from both sides. I think we're just lucky! Although with my anxiety I think my OH would rather I'd just had some sickness!!Officially Mrs B as of March 2013

I did feel better yesterday thank you
I had my meals but grazed slightly in between and it helped. Brought some slightly salted crackers from Aldi and they worked a dream.
Susie I echo what the others have saidI think you just wrote down what every new mum to be worries about. Somehow we will all muddle through!!
Got my booking in app on 23rd after speaking with midwife yesterday. I'll be 9+6 when I go, she ran through some important bits on the phone but was all stuff admittedly I knew. Apart from she suggested having a small glass of orange juice when I take my vits to help the iron absorb, which I'm going to start doing. I'm taking the pregnacare plus with omega 3.Christmas is the most magical time of the year :santa2:

Sorry butting my nose in as someone mentioned books, to say as a first time mum back in 2013 (now a mum of 2!) my hubby bought me 'what to expect when you're expecting' and I loved it! Very detailed and covers a lot of stuff, post birth as well. I really didn't have a clue about babies back then but it does come naturally 🙂Mum of 2 :j0
