Yeh, hang in there for another couple of weeks! xxx
  • Hi guys, my girlfriends period is running a little late, she had one day where she was feeling cramps, throwing up, headaches and diarrhoea so we decided to do a test. We got a cheap kit from Tesco, £3 or something, and it as come up positive.

Weird feeling, not too overjoyed at the moment as we want to make sure that it's accurate and not a false positive.

    I wanted to know -

    Why do false positives occur?
Is there anything we should be doing to double check the results?
When do we go to the GP?

    Hi Andrew,

False positives are actually really rare - if the line was showing very clearly then it's almost certain that your girlfriend is pregnant.

It's far more common to have a false negative.

You can double check the result by taking another test - it doesn't matter if the test was cheap if it was sold in a reputable shop then it will be as good as any more expensive stick.

As soon as you have a positive test you can contact your local health provider.

In our area you can self refer directly to the midwifery department and they will then take details and give you a date for the first appointment with the midwife (booking appointment) which you receive in the post - usually happens between 8 and 11 weeks.

However if self referal isn't available where you are then contact GP and they will sort out a referal for you.

  • I did my first test the day after my period was supposed to start and it had the faintest blue line, waited a couple of days did another one which was more conclusive so I would suggest nipping out to get another test.

If you do get a positive result ring your gp surgery, they'll advise you whether you need to see a doctor or book straight in with the midwife in a few weeks time.
  • Hi everyone! Hope you're all feeling well this bank holiday weekend and nausea not ruining it!

My positive test was back on August 1st, and my last period started 30th June. I went to the doctor for the referral almost straight away, got a letter to call for an appointment which I did on August 10th. Was told that they would send a date for the appointment via post, but not received anything yet which is driving me crazy! How far into the pregnancy is the booking appointment usually?

I had mine yesterday at 8 weeks 4 days.

You're only 4 days behind me so I would ring them after the weekend should expect an appointment within the next couple of weeks. Maybe they have the wrong address or its lost in the system somewhere.

    Congrats btw.

Mine was supposed to be 9 weeks (10 from LMP) but actually ended up being 10 (11) as I had to move it. That's pretty normal here and it did take a while for me.to get the letter - and I didn't even refer until 7 weeks.

  • Thanks, I'll give them a chase on Tuesday. I really can't wait for my scan date so I know when I can tell people!

Hey ladies how are we all? I'm 12 weeks tomorrow!! Going to stay here until scan and tests are done though. After my scan at 10+3 I'm feeling really positive about baby being ok and no MMC, but I'm not absolutely terrified about the test results!

I also still don't actually have my scan date. Spoke to midwife on Friday who said I should hear Tues/Weds as I only booked in less than 2 weeks ago, and I don't actually mind as I'm not desperate to tell people, but I just want to make sure I get in before it's too late for tests. I still have 2 weeks but as my notes are on LMP it will look like I only have one. Will be chasing on Weds if I haven't heard.

We're also really unsure how we feel about downs test results. Obviously NHS high risk is 1 in 150 but we're debating at what level we would still have a harmony test to be sure. Ergh so much worry!! I told my best friend today who has a 10 month old and she told me it never stops lol.

Our plan now is to tell as few people as possible before the 20 week anomaly scan, then we might finally be willing to shout about it a bit more :-)
