Rachy could you just hand it to your mum to open and if she asks you what is it just say 'open it and see'...that way she'll probably just open it quickly to find out and not ask any further questions?

Thanks Tinks. I was hoping we might have our scan by then but it's actually the next day! aaargh! We'll have our early scan though so I think telling parents the day before the big one should be ok...fingers crossed!

I have a bit of a dilemma today. My sis in law lives down south and is having issues with her partner. She is coming up for a visit at the end of May (bank hol weekend) and asked if she could come stay with us for a night to get some advice which I said was absolutely fine. OH is out that night so she said 'excellent, girls night on the fizz'...it's way too early to tell her, plus she is not the person you'd trust with such a secret. How do I manage this situation?

I think its time for a well timed bladder infection with antibiotics PP!!

Failing that you could get some Shloer/alcohol free wine and just make sure to top her/you up in the kitchen with the right one haha!

I have a wedding that same weekend and luckily the bride and groom know (v.close friends) and have said they'll make sure I have fake booze looking fizz for toasts etc.

I would go with fake wine too. I was drinking with friends a few weeks ago and emptied bottles of rose down the sink (sob!) and filled them with alcohol free stuff - nobody knew any different.

We have a wedding this weekend, I have already said I aren't drinking as we've got so much going on at the moment but got a feeling it's still going to be tricky.

Pink - if you go for the antibiotics excuse, I'd say you have a gum or tooth infection and dentist has prescribed Metronidazole for which you would be VERY sick if you mixed with alcohol.

I only say this because most people realise that normal antibiotics are OK with a little alcohol!

  • Agree with Euro... antibiotics sadly is now a giveaway for it.

My sister in law was chief bridesmaid on Saturday and no-one realised she wasn't drinking... she put alcohol free wine into some cheap normal bottles of wine (emptied first of course!) for the bridal party drinks the night before and in the evening of the wedding had wine glasses with lemonade and lime in them, looked like white wine! She was sat next to her dad during the meal and he didn't even notice!

Nope. She would ask a million questions first and may not even open it. I may crack with a 'there's something going on' face so I want to be as normal as possible when I hand her it.

I agree with some posters regarding the antibiotics line, most won't believe that these days. You could do either:

    1. Feign illness on the day and be well enough to play hostess but not for alcohol

    2. Get something alcohol free for you but make it look alcoholic. She can obviously have alcohol. Ensure you fill the glasses!

I am planning on getting some of the alcohol free Koppaberg for Summer to see if it feels the same. Going to really miss Beer Garden outings in the sunshine :(

Thanks for this. Helpful for my upcoming guest appearance at a wedding :)

Thanks for all the suggestions - v helpful! I had thought of the antibiotics one but she is an expert on these things...always something wrong with her so she knows everything about different medications. I may use the gum infection one, that could work.

I also thought I could maybe use the excuse that my back was really sore since she knows that's an issue for me anyway and I don't tend to drink when I'm on the strong painkillers. But I'm not sure I'm a good enough actor to pull off pretending to be in that much pain all evening!

If I went down the fake wine route I'm not sure how I'd keep our bottles separate. Usually we'd drink the same thing and would just put the bottle in a cooler on the table so as not to have to troop to the kitchen every two mins. I do like this idea but I'd just have to be very sneaky to pull it off!
