Morning ladies :) I had my booking in this morning, lots of paperwork. It's still the same team of 2 midwives I had with my DD, which is nice :) She's going to refer me for a debrief of my notes from last time, and suggested that I ask to be referred to the VBAC clinic as well next time I see the consultant. I need to find out whether I have to see a separate obs consultant, as the one I'm seeing at the moment is in the joint endo+obs clinic which specialises in managing gestational diabetes (which I don't have, but as I'm hypothyroid I need to see the endocrinologist). Would be more convenient to have the discussions on VBAC birth options at the same appointment, but knowing the NHS it will probably be someone else! MW seemed a bit alarmed by me saying I was considering home birth after an emergency CS last time!

  • Hi ladies, I have been speaking to HR too just to start the ball rolling, my hols run jan- jan, if I was to say take 2 weeks hols end feb then start maternity approx due date 7 march I could then take the 9 months statutotry then in December tecnincally come back but use my months holidays so get a full wage then start back in January on a part time basis – think this will prob be what I do –I only get statutory and will have savings to cover the shortfall….my only worry is at 9months ish if im still breast feeding will I be able to express for a childminder/nursery – anyone experience returning to work when baby this age?

I went back when DD was 8.5 months *niptuckfan*, and it was fine. By that age she was only feeding 4 times during the day, first thing, mid-morning, mid-afternoon and bedtime, plus 1-2 times in the night. I provided 2 bottles to nursery every day, and I'd been expressing twice a day for the last 3 months of my leave, so I had a freezer drawer full. I continued to express in the evening once I was at work, and my stash lasted until she'd dropped her daytime feeds at nursery when she was v nearly one. Nursery then offered her cows milk in a cup to drink with snacks. Although they shouldn't have cows milk as their main source of milk before one (not enough nutrients), as this was actually in addition to her normal feeds at home I wasn't worried about it. She never had formula, and I continued to feed her until she was over 2, although it was just at bedtime by the last 6 months. I'm not a no-formula purist though, if I'd not been able to express for work, she would have had 2 bottles a day at nursery and I'd have continued to feed outside work hours. Your body is clever and produces milk for the times you normally feed, so your supply can adjust. Some babies do refuse bottles and just catch up on feeds when they are with you.

If you want to express during the day when you return to work, your employer must provide you with a private space to do so, and a fridge to store the milk. So if you're part time, you might want to express at the times you would normally feed, and then give that to nursery for the next days feeds etc.

  • LittleMoog, I will get another scan at 12 weeks - the one on Thursday was too early to get accurate measurements and do all the tests. In some ways it's a good way of getting a sneaky extra scan, but it's frustrating that no one would listen to my dates - I know my body!

On the subject of maternity leave, is anyone else planning to share theirs with OH? I earn a fair amount more than him, so I'll probably go back at 6 months (I get 3 months 'full' pay (they deduct bank holidays and weekends) and 3 months at one third) and OH will take a further 3-4, depending where we are and how we find it all. If of course we make it through the next few months!

I'm not, as my maternity package is very generous, and my husband's company only offers statutory, so it doesn't make financial sense. My employer has just extended the same benefits to fathers who share leave though, so I think we'll see a lot more men taking some of the parental leave as out package is the best I've ever heard of, so most peoples partners would be on a worse package.

Glad you get to see little one again BR, always nice to have a peek :) I'm annoyed that they won't take my dates into account either, they think I'm 2 weeks further on than I am due to the mc.

Quick question ladies, when i'm looking at maternity clothes some say nursing top (maternity). Does this mean it is suited for pregnancy (giving enough room for bump) and then nursing or more for just nursing? Planning to breastfeed so if I can buy things that will last me a bit longer that would be great. Thanks!

I think so Sweetilemon - I have nursing vests from last time that were much longer than regular vest tops so fitted right at the end of pregnancy. To be honest I didn't bother with many special feeding items though, they're expensive, often not great quality and don't fit well if you've got big boobs. I just tended to wear a nursing vest or other cheap stretchy vest under my regular tops. Top layer lifts up, vest pulls or folds down so you can unclip your bra. That way your tum is still covered and you've got minimum flesh on display! I think I had one drapey top from M&P, plus some feeding nighties, and a handful of vests that I actually used.

Thanks. Really need to save for the new place/baby things/maternity (argh!) so want to keep spending to a minimum but feel I won't get away with my normal tops and jeans for much longer. I'm plus size so not a great range but ASDA seem to do quite a bit. Didn't want to get new clothes to have to buy more when baby is born anyway. I generally wear a vest top and cardigan or a floaty top over a vest top so might just invest in maternity sizes of those, seem to be relatively low cost. Hope to find a couple of nice jeans and a jumper for winter, that should do me to start off anyway.

Have a look online, new look and asks are great for basics. I loved my M&P jeans, much better quality than other makes I looked at. Debenhams Red Herring has a good range too x
