I've had a look and checked out the gov website - thanks so much for this! I didn't even consider it might be an option. I understand I'll be eligible if "on average" I earn more than £112 per week. Does anyone know where the "average" comes from? Last tax year? Last 26 weeks? Before pregnancy, during? I generally earn about £80 per week term time then holidays this increases (eg summer). I think I just earn over £112per week on average depending what weeks they average. Sorry if this is too complicated!

Edit: seem to have found the answer to my own question. It seems the 'average pay' to qualify for SMP entitalment is taken from the 2 pays before the Qualifying week (15 weeks before due date). If this is the case I won't get it as I'll be working more in my main job and less in the second. I will still ask though because over the year I qualify and certainly these 2 months I'd quality. It would make a huge difference so definately going to peruse it!

That happened to someone I know and they just doubled up the scan appointment. The midwife phoned me so they suspect they missed her call when on holiday. The booking appointment is just paper work and a blood test anyway although they do ask you to take urine samples to your scan.

'Average' is the 8 or 12 weeks before your 'qualifying week' (15th week before your due date week). Some companies who have 0 hours contracts know this and deliberately reduce hours of pregnant employees during these weeks to reduce the pay they have to give them. Very naughty, but not strictly against the law!

Also DevilDolly and MichBright have graduated on to the next thread. I guess technically the others have to but they haven't been active.

Thanks rambos mum! It is so annoying, think I'll just miss out as my hours will be reduced at this time anyway. So annoying when I've been doing full time hours this month and next month!

I'm concerned about telling work I am pregnant before my qualifying week in case they make me redundant. From what I understand, as long as they have a business case, if they make me redundant 15 weeks before my due date, they don't have to pay me SMP :(

Can I really hide my pregnancy until 25 weeks???

Do they have a history of doing things like that, or are there redundancies on the cards anyway? It never occured to me to be worried about discrimination at work, although I do think that having been on maternity leave ended up delaying my promotion, despite my employer being very "family-friendly". I had no worries over job security though, and don't this time. I've already told my boss and a couple of co-workers due to the nature of my job (lab-based)
