Mrs_T_M - I have been encoraged to have a home birth as I laboured fast with DS and they are concerned that I will labour even quicker. My concern with that is that due to the speed DS came I had some issues that only would have been able to be dealt with in a hospital so if the same happened I wouldn't want to have baby at home and then have to spend time in hospital after.
I am about 10 minutes drive from the birthing centre and if its rush hour I will call an ambulance. I can understand why home births would be appealing to some but for me I have heard too many stories from brother in law who is a paramedic that put me off.
If you ring up when in labour and they have no one to come, I imagine they would advise you to go to hospital. But already starting in that tone is a bit off. Just like I would like to give birth at the birthing centre if they told me I couldn't and there was no reason I would not be happy. I know certain pregnancy conditions insite different labour options and the labour almost dictates a lot sometimes. My friend had her baby a few weeks ago and didn't want pethedine but when it came to it she had it as she was in agony. You just don't know.
I really hope you get what you want - have you thought about a doula I think they are called? They are like birthing specialists but not midwives - might be an idea? I know someone who had an amazing experience with one and the midwife wasn't even in the room when baby came she was making a cup of tea!
AFM - arranged maternity leave date - 12 weeks to go and counting...... my job involves a lot of long distance driving so I will go off at 34 weeks, have two weeks holiday and start maternity at 36 weeks eeeeekkkkkk.3 Children - 2004 :heart2: 2014 :heart2: 2017 :heart2:

Having had the experience of wanting home birth & now being happy with consultant led, I would think that the reason they start off by saying that is that they want to prepare women that home birth *might* not happen. I was very militant about what type of birth I wanted to start with & was met with a lot of resistance & now I can see why. If they have a shortage of midwives, there's not much they can do I guess. There's so much that can happen, as long as our babies are safe I can imagine none of us will actually care how and where they get here in the endFirst baby due 3/3/14 - Team Yellow! Congratulations Kerri! Beautiful name
Bet she was worth the wait wasn't she?
nickit1978 - Good luck for your induction! Hope all goes as planned.
fran-o - 6ft 8?! Wow. Is this your first baby? I am not far behind you and at my appt today she said he wasn't engaged.
Mrs_T_M - Hope you get the birth you want. They offered me a home birth but I want access to drugs etc lol Plus my husband went a bit pale at the thought of a home birth!
lulu75 - do you want a home birth too? Good luck with the house. We are in the process of moving - aiming for completion this friday! It's getting a bit stressful now, hope we can make it nice before baby makes his appearance.
smartcat04 - Good luck for the physio tomorrow. I would question the midwife about the baby becoming addicted! Ask your GP/pharmacist. You are nearly there now so wouldn't be taking Cocodamol for much longer would you?! Silly midwife!
LannieDuck - Hope you get a speedy physio referral. Pesky babies, we are supposed to be glowing and 'healthy' during pregnancy, not feel like we're falling to pieces!
mincepiemonster - 2cm already? Good luck!Could be born on the due date?!
Birdie85 - My OH is the same. We are hoping our baby will be late as we haven't sorted the house yet so he is convinced the baby is coming early. I can't even go for a wee without him worrying!
becca0417 - Sorry it didn't go as planned. How did the scan go? Hope your next appt is more positive.
firefly369 - Sounds promising! Hope things go smoothly
mrshappy - Congratulations! Did you have an inkling?0 -
Was it one of those things where you go in with a plan to talk about something but then the meeting ends up being about something else entirely?
At least you have another meeting planned.
Yes it was! I'd planned to go in there & discuss my concerns around the GBS & how that will impact birth... He picked up on my notes straight away that baby is measuring over so was whisked in for growth scan. Back in 3 weeks for more checks
How did the growth scan compare to your bump measurement? Was it like mine where baby was just average in the end?!Good luck Nickit, mincepiemonster and firefly, looking forward to your birth announcements.

That's lovely news!
Firefly oh my goodness, can't believe the broke your waters & you're already dilating! Was that because they expect it to bring on labour? I thought that you had a scan and the baby wasn't bigger than they were supposed to be so how come they wanted you to have a sweep originally before your due date? Are they just being cautious? X0 -
Claire - baby is above the centile lines even though it measured 29 cm at 29 weeks. He said my uterus is very tight which seems to be his main concern. Baby is breech & has 3 weeks to turn. Basically just wait & see!First baby due 3/3/14 - Team Yellow! Our little girl born 25/2/140

The thing that gets me is that it's common practice to wait until a person is in labour and then say there isn't anyone available. This seems to have been an ongoing problem in this area for years, yet they won't do anything to alleviate the problem.
I'd honestly be happy giving birth with just my husband and mother in the room, but I would like someone specifically trained with babies to be there if needed.
Everyone is going to want different things, and with the fact I'm already terrified of hospitals, being told I'll be forced to go in won't help. I'd get there and my labour would probably stop, I'd get put on a drip (I hate needles as well), and end up with an 'emergency' c-section just like what happened to my cousin when she had her son. Her labour stopped when she went into hospital because she was so scared and upset. They tried to force it to start again, cue her being more upset, she never dilated completely and they rushed and forced her to have a c-section (no they didn't sign a form saying that the hospital could).
If she could have had a midwife and the option of a birthing centre (or anywhere other than the hospital) she would have probably been much better.
We have thought about a doula, and if we can afford one closer to time (probably about 35 weeks) we will get one.
Anyway, everyone will have different wants and desires, so I'm leaving this subject now.0 -

Ah so like over those line things they put in the report at growth scan?
Well that does show then that bump measurements can sometimes mean nothing because if you were 29 at 29 weeks you'd expect that to mean baby was on the 50th percentile!
My baby is breech too but I have a little longer to go
My friend last baby turned from breech, she told me sit up straight on the sofa with pillows behind your back, and she was advised to try to be upside down if she could! So she said she did some sort of leg stands up against the wall lol! And lie on the left if you can.
I think spinning babies website has tips too, I saw a photo of a women like leaning off the sofa with her head down.0 -
Mrs TM does your hospital do tours as part of ante natal classes or on their own?
Just wondering because mine doesn't(unless it's on my one day course there but have a feeling it's not) but just thinking if yours did, you might feel a bit better if you had a tour. Not for having a hospital birth, I just mean in case you were at home but then had to go in for an emergency it might help you so you weren't having that to worry about on top?
I hate hospitals too - which DH thinks is funny as he's like well who likes hospitals?! But I really did feel uncomfortable about the whole thing, but when I was forced to stay in with bleeding, just seeing the ward and talking to various drs & midwives has made me feel less anxious if I were to end up on the delivery suite instead of the midwifery suite where I'd ideally like to be. Like I know I can spend the night there and not freak out, and things like I coped when DH left, and even that the toilets were spotless as I'm a bit OCD about that type of thing
So although I hope to not end up on that particular ward again as it was the high risk one, at least if I were to end up with an emergency c section or something I'd feel a little better than if I hadn't been in there at all.
The other option is to move house in the next few weeks to a more home birth friendly areathey'd love to have you in Devon!

Good luck all those with babies seeming imminent
!! Looking forwards to the birth updates!!
Congratulations to the new mummies and welcome babies!
I had a MW appointment today, wasn't my usual lovely MW but the substitute was still nice, had a moment of concern as she said the heartbeat sounded a little fast, she got out her phone to record what I assume was beats per minutes.. was still a bit fast but then she waited a bit and tried again and it was fine... during the fast moments I was feeling and seeing baby move so she said it's because of that and not to worry - just like when we move a lot our heartbeat raised. BP is fine and she said I am measuring fine.
I'm booked in for another 3 weeks as that will be me 32 weeks and also booked in next week for whooping cough vaccination - have any you had this ? I know it's a personal choice but decided I will have it as we had an outbreak of it it work early last year.
Bought cot mattress, some nappies, sterilising tablets and some bottles today. Amazon have some good baby deals on atm.0
