  • Hi inood :hello:

sounds like a very sensible course of action to me. We can't be specialists in everything and often seek expertise when we need help with decorating, finances, diet and fitness etc. It's just the same with our mental health, in fact I'd say much more important. Sometimes advice is needed and it makes sense to get some expert input. There's no failing in that.

As the others have already said, you are not a failure.

Nobody who seeks treatment for their mental health is a failure, it means you have been honest about how you are feeling and are getting the help you need.

It's not about how much anyone has been through - it is about how your own body reacts to things that matter.

I obviously don't know your history but if you are on medication for mental health please do not feel a failure if you are on them for a long time, some people just need them for a long time.
My DH has been on anti-depressants for the last 20 years, he will never be able to stop taking them and as long as they help him get through life who are we to worry??

Just popping on to say that in any other area of our lives, we would go and seek professional help for something that we were confronted with that we couldn't sort out ourselves. Mental health is the same and you are very brave and very strong to have got yourself to where you need to be. Go you x

Dear INOD, it takes great strength to ask for and follow through on getting help. Prioritise yourself, in order that you are fit to help others.

My DH has suffered MH issues all his life, due to abusive parenting (violence, alcoholism, suicide). He suffers, his siblings suffer, and they won't talk about it. I tried having conversations about it with his siblings, but didn't get far. I now tell people that he is struggling, and in fact I'm getting surprisingly positive responses from my relatives and friends. DH gave me permission this year to talk about his black dog struggles, which has helped me enormously, as my support system has been strengthened, which in turn enables me to maintain my support.

I had some counselling sessions recently, which helped me cope with stressful family issues, and also helped me set objectives. I read somewhere of a GP practice that asked "what do you want to achieve today". Sometimes what you want to achieve is complex; sometimes it's as simple as "Today I'd like to resist sweets/sugar/drink/arguing/ slothing/crying/spending/avoidance".

PM me if you want, you know I'm here for you. In the meantime, I'm praying for you.
What would you get if all you got was what you were thankful for?
