Downloaded whatsApp and discovered alot of charges relating to text messages, why?

Happy belated christmas all.
Recently I downloaded and started using WhattsApp, the fun messaging service for smartphones. A complete novice with this app.
fastfording, I notice a number of text message charges now appearing. I notice there are options such as "add to favorites" and "share contact" do these funbctions generate a text???
be grateful if someone can help as i dont want these text charges to rise?

It shouldn't do, no.
When you text are you going into the Whatsapp app and then using it to text (or chat as they tend to be called) or are you still using your normal text app?0 -
Whatsapp uses data and shouldn't use your text allowance up at all.
Like jem asked, are you still texting anyone? Or receiving sms messages from premium numbers that may charge, anything like that?0 -
You shouldn't be getting charged. It will only use your data. Be careful that you are not texting people and recommending that they use Whats App because I can imagine that can be done qutite easily.0

Another note the other person has to have Whats App installed for you to be able to message them.0

arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr maybe that's what I am doing, I think if I remember right there has been a button suggesting I can "recommend someone to use whatsapp" also, the text messages have all been abroad, so outside my usual allowanceTrinidad - I have a number of needs. Probably would have been better to use email to recommend to friends/family.0
